lovemywhirlygirls
Just popping in while on break to ask a question. My girls have begun ballet for the first time. I am looking for your recommendations for a ballet book that shows, via illustration or photograph, the various positions and movements as well as their corresponding French name. Would like them to have something they can review during the week so that when they show up to class they remember what movements go with the terminology the instructor uses. Thanks in advance! SonshineLearner
Ask if you can video them practicing, and perhaps have the teacher say the name... and what it means to do... so that your girls can "practice" at home. Also, if you have room, a bar to do exercises is a plus. Carrie:-)
LNC
It somewhat depends on the kind of curriculum your daughter's conservatory uses. Some I know of are Royal Academy of Dance, Vaganova and Cecchetti. You may want to ask your director or teacher which book would best serve their students. The best book we own, but very detailed, is this: *Classical Ballet Techniques, by Gretchen Ward Warren: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0813009456/ref=ox_ya_oh_product We also like these, but not really the dictionary you are looking for: *The Pointe Book, by Janice Barringer: http://www.amazon.com/Pointe-Book-Training-Technique-Second/dp/087127261X/ref=pd_sim_b_5 *The Ballet Companion, by Eliza Gaynor Minden: http://www.amazon.com/Ballet-Companion-Dancers-Technique-Traditions/dp/074326407X/ref=pd_sim_b_6 We also like this one to help with tips to remediate some problems my daughter has developed: *Dancing Longer Dancing Stronger, Andrea Watkins http://www.amazon.com/Dancing-Longer-Stronger-Improving-Preventing/dp/0916622983/ref=pd_sim_b_53 And for young dancers! Our very favorite: *The Ballet Book, by Darcey Bussell http://www.amazon.com/Ballet-Book-Darcey-Bussell/dp/0756619335/ref=pd_sim_b_14 Oh and I forgot the best resource is free! The American Ballet Theater online dictionary! http://www.abt.org/education/dictionary/index.html Edited September 18, 2009 by LNC
