Quiver0f10
I had planned for my upcoming 9th grade DD to do Physical Science in 9th, Biology in 10th and Chemistry in 11th. However, there is an opportunity to take a chemistry class at our co-op this year and it is open to all 9-12th graders. I have no idea if they will offer it the following year or not. I would love for her to take this class, but I am not sure if science should be done in any certain order. My older kids did physical in 8th, but followed the same order. She will be using Chalkdust Alg I next year but is not a very mathy kid. What do you think?
K-FL
The math would be my concern. Apologia recommends that they've completed Alg I before starting Chemistry.
Leanna Tomlinson
In our co-op, the big dividing line between those who did well and those who struggled was the math background. The kids who had not completed Algebra I and were taking it concurrently with Chemistry did not have the skills to do well in the class. I would wait on Chemistry for this child. FWIW, my 17yo dd is going to be teaching her brother and 4 friends Apologia Chemistry this year. I had agonized and worried after our great Chemistry teacher announced she was leaving our co-op, but the teacher, who taught my dd Advanced Chemistry, was sure my dd could handle it. You never know how your needs might be met down the road.:) HTH, Leanna
Pamela H in Texas
The math would be my concern also. I know some people have done it, but I wouldn't ask it of my student (and I have math strong students). Quiver0f10
Thank you all. I know you're right, I just needed to hear it :)
Julie in MN
Beginnings Publishing does Chemistry before Biology. The have a short math course for those who haven't completed Algebra. You might check out that math program if you think your student's up to it. It's called "Bridge Math." Julie
