pbjmeyer
I know in the Sonlight program, Fallacy Detective is included in sl100, which will be in 9th grade for us. My ds starts 7th grade in the fall with SL 6. Should I move this book into this year's schedule? Is there another simple intro to logic that you could recommend to introduce it? Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated! Thanks.
Suzannah
WTM recommends the Mindbenders and Case of Red Herrings as an intro to Logic. If you feel your DC needs something first, go with one or both of these. But we are planning to use Fallacy Detective for 7th next year. Is your son firmly in logic stage thinking? My plan has been to have my dc work through FD when they have clearly reached logic stage thinking. My dc started with The THinking Toolbox in 6th and moved into FD in 7th. Then, they are ready for formal logic in 8th. (One dc worked through this schedule a year earlier just because I was keeping him with his sister and he was ready. Another worked through a year later because FD hadn't yet been published and then we started logic.) It's especially helpful to start FD in 7th if you are moving into formal logic the next year. I've found the high school years are so full of such dense classes (upper level lit, math, science, etc) that it helps to free the high school schedule by doing logic in late middle school.
