We discovered municipal campgrounds when we drove from chicagoland out to mount rushmore. Try googleing "municipal campgrounds + the town you want to be near. We stayed in a few through Nebraska and they were an excellent value at maybe $12-15 a night. You could walk into town- and one we stayed in included free open swim in their town's public pool. My teen boys were celebrities for the night- with the preteen farm girls asking them all about Chicago!

You might check Mahoney State Park. It is between Omaha and Lincoln off I-80, very near the SAC Museum (It may also be called the Air and Space Museum).

I'm driving from MN to CO. I want to be relatively close to the highway, but proximity to Lincoln or Omaha is not so important.

Thanks!
