  1. Thanks guys! We're not really super upset... I can't look at her sweet face and be anything but grateful for the time we have together. If she has to have a medical issue this is probably the luckiest one to get- it's not life threatening and she'll be just fine. It's a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things and we're just trying to find a financial loophole, LOL.

  2. Hey guys,

    I took my daughter to the orthodontist yesterday because of her twenty missing permanent teeth (see this thread) and it was exactly as LisaK had warned. They told us to save up 20 thousand dollars in the next ten years in order to correct the problem. It's not covered by insurance. I do not understand how TWENTY missing teeth wouldn't be covered. It's not a vanity issue when it's twenty- she could have real problems without replacing at least some of those teeth.

     

    Anyway, the orthodontist did say that he had one patient with the same issue (though not as severe) who was able to get insurance coverage because he found out he had a medical syndrome associated with congenitally missing teeth. He said to get involved in as many research studies as we can find in order to find out about different issues that could lead to missing teeth. I found the Baylor study and signed up for it, but if anyone else knows of any other missing teeth studies please let me know.

     

    For about an hour, I seriously considered putting my daughter in school and going back to work to save up the money to pay for this- but only for an hour:lol:. We'll just have to cross the bridge when we come to it, but homeschooling is so good for her right now that we can't give it up just yet.

  3. I am wondering why he is considering deleting the second grade texts. Is it because he thinks the material is too advanced for a second grader to master? I have a first grader (let me know if I should be asking this on the other board) and this looks very interesting for second grade next year. However, she's a typical student, not an advanced one.

     

    Does anyone have any opinions on how this compares to First Language Lessons or Phonics Road?

  4. Ok....

    Why not change the younger program just a little to make it more developmentally appropriate? Maybe cut out a few of the subjects to allow for 10 bathroom breaks, slow hands, wandering attention spans, more help needed. If a 6 year old is super motivated to do memory master and is that advanced, bump them up to the next age group but let the rest concentrate on fewer topics and do them well.

     

    :iagree: My daughter says she wishes she only had to memorize 3 things per week, and that would be enough for her. I think that's more appropriate for her age as well. I know it's sad to think of letting go of some of the subjects, but I think it would help the younger children have a more developmentally appropriate curriculum.

     

    One thing I would say that might help you- talk to your tutor. I let mine know that Grace was having a hard time with the information. Our tutor was very understanding, so we've been doing memory work for 15 minutes a day and she just gets what she gets and that is fine. We've decided to skip the stuff that makes no sense to her.

     

    This is a recent decision so I can't say how it will fly yet, but I've got to do something or we're going to end up quitting before the year is out. Neither my daughter nor I will be able to continue at the current pace. I've coached my daughter in how to say "I don't know that answer, can I have some help?" This week it went very well. We'll see how it goes... I'm dreading the science next semester. I'm just not sure my daughter is going to be at all interested in memorizing the elements, LOL.

  5. I kind of think of FLL as similar to MUS. I think because it's very incremental and it focuses on one concept at a time until the child understands it backwards and forwards before moving on to something else. But I've only seen FLL 1/2 and MUS Alpha, so that's a limited viewpoint.

  6. I don't know if this would help you, but I went through and made a list of library books available by week on the different topics and I would be willing to email it to you. It is tailored to my own daughter so it's the Step Into Reading Level 3/4 type books and Let's Read and Find Out books with a FEW harder ones thrown in here and there. I just take it to the library and check out the list for that week. It's been super easy. This might help- although all the books I have separated by week are available in my library system and may or may not be around in yours (though I did pick pretty standard books so they would probably be there).

     

    I've had a lot of trouble trying to keep up with the pace of CC this year. I feel like it goes TOO fast to be a real spine. I'm just settling in to talk about the revolutionary war and then we are off to Lewis and Clark, KWIM? The science has been really easy because we just do a page in the children's encyclopedia and then I printed off those Scholastic Human Body projects and Scholastic Non-fiction Human body reading short books at the beginning of the year and stuck them in file folders with the week on it (got them at the 99 cent scholastic sale and they are great). The human body projects have really been fun and helpful and easy. They are all models of what we are doing but they're made of printable paper (cardstock) and easy to put together. Sparks interest, ten minutes done, and she has something to take to show and tell. They also have a Let's Read and Find Out book for just about every week on the human body, but I don't know if that would be too young for your nine year old. Even if it was the info is relevant.

     

    I am not sure if we will do CC again next year. I have LOVED how much she learns, but I feel like a hamster on a wheel. I'm running but I can never catch up. I want to stop and smell the roses, spend 3 or 4 weeks on the revolutionary war, and not have to threaten my child with losing priviledges just to get her to do her memory work. I kind of think maybe 6 is just a little too young to do this... She says she likes it but she wishes it were just 3 things to learn each week instead of seven, and I agree completely. We may do CC at home next year at a slower pace. Two weeks for each section...

  7. But special grips help a lot. For a thumb wrap, try either a Grotto grip or the Claw. Order a bunch - it's sort of a pain to take them off one pencil & put them on another, so you want one for every writing utensil.

     

    Use them 100% of the time for 3 months or so, then cut back.

  8. I think the poster with the grip experience said those wouldn't work and to use grotto or... I forgot but she posted it on the second page of this thread. She even pointed out to use that particular brand and not any look alikes because the density is different.

     

    As for the crayons- I wish the twistable crayons could be refilled. I feel like I'm wasting when I throw the empties out and it makes me hesitant to purchase them again.

     

    Also, my DD has sensory issues too and I read that using the drawing pencils (not charcoal but the sketching kind) helps them because the pencil color is darker so they don't press down as hard. We have tried it and it does not, of course, help with her grip, but it does help a little with the pressing down issue a LITTLE bit. By a little I mean that she's still pressing down too hard but her fingers are not white from the pressure (funny, it's no wonder she doesn't like to write more than one sentence, LOL).

    Is that the same as these? These are what we have but I only have one package, and you are right that it's a pain and we can never find them (although that might be intentional on DD's part).

  10. I'm not positive on this, but I think there's a book called The ABC's and all Their Tricks that might work. Also, the book How To Teach Spelling is supposed to be similar to AAS but less "stuff." I have not seen either of these in real life so I don't know for sure, but I've heard that. Also, Spell to Write and Read has less "stuff" but it's still a pretty intense experience for the teacher, LOL.

  11. Sounds about right... if my teeth had been done right from the start, it would have cost me about $25,000. We are now over $50,000. :tongue_smilie:

     

    Oh my goodness. My husband is going to have a nervous breakdown. Grace is only 6.5- she'll be 7 in March. I don't know how they can tell she'll be missing this many teeth already. My mom said her wisdom teeth came in so there's still a chance Grace might get those (I didn't but maybe she will). My mom said she's missing 11 teeth and I'm missing 8. I had braces for 5 years but other than that no other work needed to be done.

     

    If you don't mind my asking how many teeth were you missing and what kind of work did they have to do to fix it?

     

    But really- this may not be that bad! Because if you are missing a number of baby teeth but still have a large number of adult teeth then things are going to move around and need help. What they are saying is that MOST of Grace's baby teeth are going to stay right where they are at. She only has four more teeth coming in (the canines) and other than that everything will just stay the way it is- so maybe there won't be much of a problem with things moving around. I hope I'm not just dreaming, LOL.

  12. I was missing 6. My dad was missing 12. Wow, 20 is a lot. My brother was missing quite a few as well. He kept his baby teeth into his 20s, and when the roots finally gave out, he got some implants to make up the gaps.

     

    Wow, that sounds expensive!!! Mine have been OK so far. I can say I will not be letting DD miss any dental cleanings or skip flossing from now on, LOL!!!

  13. My dd's dentist said she is missing 20 of her adult teeth. She said we need to see an orthodontist to set up a plan of action for dealing with her as she grows... I was not surprised that she was missing teeth, as I am missing 8 myself, but even the dentist looked concerned about it being 20. Anyone else have experience with this issue?

     

    For the record, my mouth doesn't look funny or anything. You can't tell at all after five years of braces, LOL! :lol:

  14. Am I scoring incorrectly? I know of no way to consider time spent in the score. It's 3 minutes to read the passage and answer as many questions as possible. The score is based on the number of correct answers, as I understand it.

     

    I agree that not allowing the student to look back within that time would test memory and maybe reading speed but not really be a great measure of comprehension.

     

    That was my understanding of the directions as well. I saw that it said three minutes total and to tell the children to check their work if they have extra time, so does that infer that they may look back if they want to do so? However, it then says "if you do not know the answer, try to guess, and then move on to the next question." Does that infer that they may not look back at the text?

     

    This is frustrating...

     

    So are you still measuring reading comprehension if you let them look back in the text?

On the McCall Crabs Test Lessons in Reading- does anyone know if you are allowed to look back into the paragraph for answers to questions if you still have time left on the clock and don't remember? I don't want to interfere with the test results, but I have told my DD that she should check the paragraph for answers she doesn't remember when she has to answer comprehension questions on yearly testing so she will probably do it for this too. I checked the teacher's manual and didn't notice anything regarding whether this is OK...

  16. Thanks guys for all the helpful answers. I think I'm going to go with the idea of doing the FLL narrations as a prep to WWE, and maybe starting WWE after Christmas. That way she'll have a bit more time to prepare and build up confidence.

     

    It is good to hear that she could start WWE now though. I'm so excited about her progress. She's worked so hard and it's so great to see her improving. I love homeschooling at times like this. I still remember when she read her first word, did her first math problem... We're all so lucky to get to be part of our kid's lives this way.

  17. I am not doing FLL right now, we're doing Phonics Road Level 1, but I do have the old FLL 1/2 combo book that my mom got me when we decided to homeschool a few years ago. Would it be good to pull that out and use that for narration practice for a while before starting WWE 1? We hadn't been using it because PR is a complete program, but I got the WWE 1 because knew I'd need something to help her reading comprehension due to her auditory delays.

     

    I was so excited to see that she was actually getting some of the answers correct that I didn't bother to request complete sentences, but I am sure she could make her answers in complete sentences if I asked her. I just didn't want to spook her at a time when she was trying so hard. I just gave her lots and lots of praise and told her she was doing great, and I figured I'd request complete sentences later when she's more confident about her answers.

     

    So, what I'm getting from the responses is: pull out FLL and try the narration exercises within that text, and once she gets comfortable move on to WWE 1 because she's still not quite ready ? I don't mind doing that- I want her to progress at her own pace and I don't want her to be pushed. It sounded like her answers were almost there, but maybe we should wait a bit longer to make certain that she's ready?
