  1. This is why I wish more people would vote third party. If no one ever does, how will other parties ever develop? It is frustrating. I feel like the two parties have a stranglehold on the gov't.

I know, I'm with you on that one. You're exactly right, and its an argument I've used when flamed for the times I've voted 3rd party. Its gotta start somewhere, or it will never come to be on its own.

  2. Great...my top matches are people I know nothing about and don't stand a chance in winning anyway. I really dislike that situation. "Waste a vote" or vote your conscience. The things I disagree with Obama about are big enough mountains to feel like I have no choice but vote away from him but I don't 100% agree with McCain. Between the two, I don't particularly want either but McCain is slightly in better agreement.

Why do I feel like I'm trying to choose between the lesser of two evils?? Ugh :willy_nilly:

I don't feel that way about this particular election, but I know what you mean. In the last election, my vote was not so much *for* a political candidate as it was a vote *against* who he was running against.

Sometimes its just like that, unfortunately. If there were more parties that truly had a chance, we're stronger and bigger, then it might be different.

  3. :iagree:

But I do think there is a large percentage of people on the planet who have chosen to discount science totally.

    Jen

I know. I could cry about it.

Imagine how much different it would be if mainstream news reported on the multitude of scientific advancements going on right now that barely anyone is aware of.

Why do we get scandal after scandal shoved down our throat, when we have so many new adavancements in our knowledge that would make anyone proud to be a human being, proud of how far we've come and how much we've learned, purely by our own effort and curiosity.

The process of scientific discovery, to me, is more beautiful then faith.

  4. I think all she was saying is that nobody has explored the entire universe, nobody has all the answers. Therefore, nobody is really qualified to tell the world (or just London), it is safe to live anyway you want. She wasn't saying that there is a person who has all the answers.

As to why God has to hide behind mysteries? I think she was referring to the seemingly mysterious and miraculous elements of our universe which seem to point to intelligent design or some other supernatural presence.

Behind the mysteries of the universe, there is math and science. We just haven't evolved our intelligence enough yet to understand them, or even reach them. My hope is that we do before the human race becomes extinct.

I knew what she meant about Dawkins. My point is that he may not have the answers, but neither does anyone else. So why discount his view, when it has just as much chance of being right as yours does? Should we discount everyone's view then?

  5. Between this and the social group thread I gotta say I had no idea grown women actually mock other people...

There's always mocking here. We're very good at it. Sometimes you have to look closely though. :tongue_smilie:

There are atheists closer at hand if you want to worship one.

    I've always fancied being worshipped.

I'd mandate special days for honoring chocolate, and books, and long spa holidays for mothers.... ;) right back at ya ;)

Now THAT is how to worship somebody!

  6. I suppose he knows it all then, doesn't he. He has explored the entire universe and found absolutely no mystery behind which a god could be hiding. If he truly has that depth of knowledge than we should be worshiping him, don't you think? ;)

    Nobody said there was one.

I hate to break it to you guys, but God is not afraid of Richard Dawkins. ;)

I suppose, since Dawkins hasn't explored the universe, that someone else has, and that they have all the answers? Where is this person??!! I have a question about black holes and the big bang for them!! (I really do)

Why do you think god has to hide behind mysteries?

And I daresay Dawkins isn't worried eversomuch about the stories of god and heaven so much either. ;)

  7. I totally get it. I personally go out of my way to read things that don't agree with my POV because I think its foolish to live in the Echo Chamber of my own beliefs and to never try to understand what the "other side" thinks. I've come around on many an issue by actually listening to the other side and I've cemented my opposition to them on many an issue by listening to their perspective. I don't blame you for looking. It isn't a private group and no expectation of privacy should have been assumed.

There are times when I want to debate and/or hear the voices of people who are in opposition to me. Debating though, can wear a person out. There are other times when I want to hang around with like-minds, its much more relaxing. I think both are needed.

No, these groups are not private and everyone can read them. But what is the use of them if we all still have to be worried about how everyone is going to react. If you look in a group that you know you already disagree with, then be prepared to deal with what you see like an adult. Leave it alone. Live and let live.

I would never go to one of the christian groups just to see what I can find that offends me (and there would be plenty) and then point it out to everybody. Who needs the controversy? This became a better place when we got social groups to hang out with people and not argue!! Why are we trying to change that...by starting arguments about our social groups????

  8. Are you serious? You actually think I would be the reason for getting the groups taken away? I believe your frustration is misdirected.

I think that if this gets out of hand, and people start getting all mad about what other people are saying in each others' social groups, and bringing it out on the gen board to cause problems, then its possible the groups will get taken away. The mods aren't going to want to deal with another situaion like the headache that rep had become.

You alone would no be reason for getting the groups taken away, should that happen. But you did start something.

Oh, I'm not frustrated either. I have no problem with what people are posting in any group. I don't go to the ones that may make me angry, thats just common sense.

  9. To get off on the sidetrack that this thread has taken (perhaps for the best), I personally find it offensive when someone prays for me. I feel like they have taken away my choice in the matter. I've chosen not to involve prayers in my life, and if they pray for me knowing that, its arrogant of them, and it takes away my choice. Thats how I feel, though I think I'm more touchy about it then others.

It would be like if I danced around a fire and sacrificed a goat in your name without your permission.

    haha just kidding.

  10. The OP may have been asking if board rules applied to social groups as well. But the other intent of the post, was to "tell" on the particular social groups that offended her. She brought out what she found offensive and trotted it around a bit. If she really wanted to know what the rules apply, I'm sure a mod would be a better person to contact then the entire population of the gen board.

  11. Crissy I cannot bring myself to write in my own books either. I just this year gave myself permission to write, in very small light letters, in some of our school books.

I'm not sure how many books are in the Ender's series, but I'm not going to read them all in a row. Afraid of burnout. I'll choose something different next time, then after a few others, go back to Ender.

  12. How young is young? My oldest is 8. He writes and draws like crazy. I will have to see what the age limits are for that.

I don't think I could do it right now. I have 3 kids worth of school to keep up with. I will also now have the reader's group book and I also read one sci fi book at a time while I study particle physics largely on my own. Right now I'm reading Ender's Game, it is soooo good. Been meaning to read it for decades.

I have some ideas for novels or stories, I've talked to EL a bit about writing. I just really don't have the time to devote to it. Some day!
