  1. No I understand how we're doing this: reading this book thru Nov and Dec, discussing it in Jan. Also reading a new book in Jan, while we're discussing this book. Correct? I just have terrible short term memory, I will probably have to take notes to remember what I may glean from the book.

cathmom, I would so love to do nanowrimo, but I just can't devote that amount of time to it. Maybe when my kids are older, I can have them participate too. Good luck with it!

  2. Ya know, we rarely fight. Which is good...and sometimes very annoying. I like a good argument every now and then. Sometimes when he says something I just jump in to support the opposite just for fun, whether I agree with it or not. It never works, he just stops talking.

I can't bring myself to play devil's advocate for most things political though. Too serious about that I suppose.

  3. It's going to feel as if we're getting a really slow start, but once we get rolling, we'll be reading one book and discussing the previous month's book at the same time.

I think I will be confused. And forget a lot.

  4. My dd wants to know if her daddy votes one way and mommy votes another way, do we cancel each other out? And if we do, what's the point in voting at all? I'm somewhat at a loss for an explanation. Any advice?

I would agree with what Zee said. I would tell her, no matter if votes "cancel each other out" its still important to use your voice in the political process. Especially since now-a-days it feels like the common person doesn't have many outlets to use his/her voice.

  5. No where on the copy I got does it say its abridged. It says this: The woman in white / Wilkie Collins ; edited with an introduction by John Sutherland. Exactly what does the "edited" part mean, just that Mr Sutherland added an intro...or worse?

  6. Oh no no, I didn't take it that you were questioning me. And even if you had been, its OK!!

I don't know what to think about the Jungle Book either. I don't know how a book could be changed and still be unabridged.

  7. See, and mine just rings the bell, leaves the package and walks off. Usually he's halfway down the drive before I get to the door. Sometimes he looks back and waves, sometimes not. Its always a different person too.

    I feel deprived.

  8. That was me that said it's been through several abridgements, thats just going by what I've read recently, looking at this book that I've never heard of before. :) Some said it was better abridged because the story is so involved and in some places convoluted. Again, going by what I read.

I don't know how any publisher can get away with calling a book unabridged if the story is different. Thats a new one on me.

My library also had 3 copies of WiW. I chose the longest, which still isn't 800 pages. I didn't look to see if it was abridged or not. There could be a different number of pages if the font is different, the size of the print smaller, the size of the book smaller, etc.

  9. Warning, warning, they do not stay small and cute!

I have worked on many pot-bellied pigs. They are supposed to be 75-100# as an adult but because of their dominant personalities and pushover owner they often become 300# and develop all kinds of nasty problems.

OTOH, I do remember one client that took very good care of her pig and it was a proper weight. Do thorough research and talk to people who have them before getting one. They are not housepets as so many like to promote them as. They are pigs. Even if you put lipstick on them they are still a pig......sorry just couldn't resist. They are smarter than dogs in many ways, but they are not dogs.

Exactly what I was about to say. Minus the funny lipstick joke. :D

  10. How about "Silent Hill". Did anyone suffer through this because Sean Bean was in it? I had no clue it was based on a video game. UGH! Then I had to watch the ending because I'd wonder if I hadn't.

I loved the Silent Hill video game, it was totally disturbing. Great mutants. The movie wasn't as good, BUT it did manage to capture some of the feel of the game, which a lot of games-to-movies don't. So I was ok with it.

Oh dear, there are two? this was the one with Nicolas Cage, I'm assuming the remake.

Yep, there's two. I haven't seen the Nic Cage one, but I bet its very different from the original.

    With that said....

I hated the end of the last Pirates of the Carribean movie. I mean really?! They're going to spend the rest of their lives apart except for one night every 10 or so years. Ugh!

I forgot about that! How dare they end it like that. I was not at all happy with that, I remember now. DH got an earful about it.

  11. The *coolest* thing happened to me last night. I was playing my shaman, we were in Razor Hill, running around with buckets of water putting fires out, when a player whispers to me asking if I have a second. I say sure, what for? He says he likes the name of my character (Maxplanck) and he is quitting WoW and wondering if I wanted his guild, which included 3 guild tabs and 500 gold.

I said sure and next thing I know, I'm a guildleader! He said have fun and handed all that over to me just because he recognized where my toon's name came from. Thats so cool.

  12. My BIL (the same one that prays for me against my will) has decided that they aren't going to do Santa Claus for their two babies when they get older because when it comes time for them to find out Santa isn't real, they don't want their kids to then start wondering if Jesus/god are real.

I kinda thought that was funny, because to me it screams "oh ye of little faith", and I would think that a family as religious as they are would not have their faith threatened by a man in a red suit who comes down the chimney once a year. Its a myth.

    Oh wait........

  13. I voted for "The Razor's Edge" but I am game for whatever majority rules. I may have to play catch-up anyway.

Thats the one I voted for too Paula. :)

We're going to shoot for finishing by the end of December, and start our discussion in January.

I thought we'd need some time to get into a routine and work around the holidays.

Umm... duh. I shoud've read the title of the thread more closely before I whipped out the abacus. :D In that case.... if one started tomorrow, and read an average of ~13.5 pages per day they could finish by Dec 31st. This assumes about 2 wks worth of not reading around the holiday time.

    Do I still get an A? :tongue_smilie:

  14. It is sad what the republican party has become. Its a joke compared to what it used to be.

We need smart fiscal conservatives too. Someone needs to balance us liberals out who would start rescue funds for cockroaches if someone made a documentary addressing their plight.

This is so very very true, as well as being . :D

  15. Michelle, I'm lucky that my crazy conservative relatives don't send me that kind of anti-obama emails. But they do my dad. Particularly one uncle. And my dad tries to reason with him. He sends back links to factcheck or snopes showing how the information being passed in these emails is complete BS. My uncle et al REFUSE to even entertain the idea of it. You know what they do? They call factcheck and snopes and all those sites..... liberal sites controlled by the democratic party. I laugh my ass off at that one. How paranoid can you get?? Then I get mad that so much idiocy is so apparent in this country. Just like you said. Too many people proud of their intolerance.

    Oh...Jennifer...Moody Blues..controversial......

  16. Oh, and Jill and Kelly: totally agree its strange how they decide what and what is not acceptable when it comes to Pagan influences on holidays. Not only that, most of them seem reluctant to accept that these are Pagan influences. And whats even less palatable to them is the way in which early christians in europe intentionally took over the pagan holidays and made them into christian holidays in order to eradicate paganism.

  17. Well I just did it. I just outed myself to the local congregation. For the first time since I moved here, had locoal churchgoers dropping by to give out pamphlets. I took one look at the pamphlet which had "god" and "truth" in the same sentence and I just blurted out "We're an atheist family, we're not interested." Then I gently closed the door.

The great part is, it worked like magic. They had no idea how to react. A does-not-compute type of "oh" was all I heard.

The bad part is, now I have visions of being reported for truancy because all my kids came to the door with me in the middle of the afternoon. Worse, our dryer broke yesterday (naturally when I had piles of laundry waiting) so I'm still in my jammies and robe and my oldest is merely wearing shorts. Even worse yet.... we were taking a 30 minute nap-break so the tv was on and I was sleeping on the couch...totally visible from the front door. Such a perfect picture I'm sure we painted.

And they better not target us as in need of salvation either.

    Just thought I'd share that.
