  1. We just switched from Miquon to Singapore Math.

We have US 3a & 3b Textbook with workbooks, and 3 challenging word problems....how is the best way to schedule this over a 36 4/day a week period? (Roughly...anyway since we can always adjust according to my DD needs.)

Any advice would greatly be appreciated!

  2. :iagree: I have used the Simply Charlotte Mason Scripture Memory System...what a great idea to use for other memory verses...plus it is FREE!

    Thanks a bunch!

Getting it all done with MOTH, Chore Packs (Responsibility Packs), & Workboxes (Treasure Boxes)!

    Our Blog: www.http://www.ournatureoflivinglearning.blogspot.com/

    DD 8.5 (3rd grader: ARFH-C; FLL3; WWE3; SM3a; Piano )

    DS 6.75 (2nd grader: ARFH-T; FLL2; WWE2; SM2a; Piano )

    DS 2.75 (Pre-K: www.letteroftheweek.com, Tot School, & joining in)

DS 6 months (catching-up to his siblings, started crawling at 5 months)

  3. We own Stories of the Great Composers, which is why I love Meet the Masters (for artist/picture study)!

Here happens to be a FREE download of the Meet the Masters program manual... (which can be used as a whole curriculum, in itself)

    http://www.getinvolvedineducation.com/pdfs/For-Program-Managers/Meet-the-Masters-Program-Manual.pdf

or you can purchase it www.meetthemasters.com ($30/per track)

Both programs include short bios of the artists, picture study w/ discussion, additional activities (including art)!

We are planning to use the FREE program manual and using Masterpiece of the Month (http://www.amazon.com/Masterpiece-Month-JENNIFER-THOMAS/dp/1557340188) for added fun, just as a previous poster listed. Masterpiece of the Month, for us, is not enough by itself for picture/artist study!

    Hope this helps!

  4. I was just researching this, as well.

I decided to check out www.classicalconversations.com just by chance...their bookstore (under the Foundations Resources)...they have memory work (you can buy either a CD, cards, or pdf file):

    Looks interesting.

I'm interested to see what others say about this and memory work in general! :bigear:

  5. Thank you for all your replies...I will definitely get this as an alternative to Sequential Spelling...especially when I'm finding it difficult to get one-on-one time with my older two, since I have a toddler and baby needing me, as well!

  6. Those of you who have used it....postives, negatives....did your child/children retain the words? Did it become "boring" for your child/children? Was it just "busy-work"?

I'm looking for a spelling program that is independent and very little guidance from mom.

Sequential Spelling is working great for us, but just keeping my :bigear: to other programs....I would do Spelling Workout, but the price is holding me back.

  7. :iagree: with many of the other posts!

I just recently purchased a Leap Frog magnetic alphabet set. He enjoys it and uses it mostly for letters in his name and the letters we have just begun learning from Letter of the Week (www.letteroftheweek.com) (Preparatory Program). We will be getting the DVD, as well....probably as a gift for his upcoming 3rd birthday.

For phonics we love Alphaphonics and plan to introduce that within the next year, as well as continue with the Letter of the Week!

  8. I own it and my DD will be using it this year.

The lines are 3/8", which I believe is just right. There is not too much for lines in the workbook a few line every 7 pages or so...most are for optional dictation exercises....as for the rest of the workbook it is mostly diagramming and some fill in the blank.....I also believe the lines are just correct, especially for cursive!

  9. The author of the Life of Fred series states they are a complete program. I think they can be a complete program on their own...possibly with added drill (I know the author has some for Algebra & Trig called Fred's Home Companion...if I remember correctly, he stated others are in the works). Though, many homeschoolers are using Life of Fred as a supplement (intro. or review of a math concept).

  11. Here are a set of 8 Postcard books, 6 cards in each (48 postcards total) for $14.95 ($0.31/each)! The artists include Dali, Renoir, Winslow Homer, Gaugin, Degas, Cassatt, Frida Kahlo, Picasso, Kandinsky, Diego Rivera.

    http://www.kidsart.com/store/postcards.html

My children are the same age as your children (the original poster)!

For myself, I've gone with Set 1,2,3 Advanced set (I bought mine used on Amazon) and I did not buy the book (though you can buy it used, as well), then added the above prints. Works well for us. I plan to add on Steps 4 & 5 in the next year/two and add on Set 1,2,3 Beginning set (for my preschooler). This really helps spread out the cost!

    Hope this helps!

  13. We love First Language Lessons. At this age, I can't think of a grammar program that is solo. The lessons are quick... usually 10 min. max. It is fully scripted (which I though I wouldn't like)...but I'm telling you it really works. We are having a lot of fun with it!

Check it out on Amazon, to get an idea of the layout:

I'm sure you will find many others on this board who would agree with this program. We also use Writing with Ease (WWE), which is also by Susan Wise Bauer, for additional narration/copywork/dictation.

  14. Yes, the design a study Natural Speller. The spelling rules start on pg. 71

I still have my copy...maybe one of my other children will need this type of program.

Once you get a look at the program and look at the activities to incorporate (which are at the back), you will see how it all goes together. Do what works best for your child!

Other programs I considered prior to selecting Sequential Spelling were R&S Spelling (similar to Spelling Workout the WTM recommendation, but significantly cheaper) and Spellng Power (the initial cost held me back).

I've seen many people on this board use All About Spelling...I never checked it out.

  15. You and I have similar ideas regarding curriculum selections....a few weeks ago there was a post about this spelling curriculum, here is what I wrote:

We used Natural Speller for a few months. The ideas and lists seemed logically. I was excited to start our spelling adventure with what I thought was an insightful book! For the first few weeks my daughter flourished, but then it became a chore to get her to complete her daily word list activities. She also started to do poorly on the weekly test.

Nevertheless, we switched to Sequential Spelling about 4 months ago. She and my younger son are loving it (he just wanted to do what she was doing)! They are flourishing and write so much more outside of lessons! I do like the list of spelling rules in Natural Speller. (Though you can find spelling rules on the net/other books!)

It all depends on your educating philosophies! I personally think the Natural Speller method was busywork. For us, many of the activities were already incorporated into our grammar lessons through FLL.

Just my thoughts and experience...hope this helps.;)

  16. which Nature Journal? there are so many ...

does everyone generally agree this is the best Human body spine?

also, how did you rearrange the order of the NOEO, or did you??

The nature journal is called My Nature Journal: A Personal Nature Guide for Young People. We may also do this throughout the year, as there are activities to work throughout the seasons.

I think Usborne Human Body is an okay spine, but lacking in fun/activities!

I think WTM recommendation for Human Body would be the best spine to get for NOEO, but since my friend sells Usborne, I just went with it! (It would not effect the NOEO plan in anyway, if a different spine was selected!)

We are incorporating DK My First Body Book because of the fun activities in the book and there are also nice transparency overlays to show the different systems...this book alone would not be enough (as it is for younger children, but my kids are interested in it)!

I did not rearrange the order of NOEO, I just followed the instructor's guide and placed the additional books to the corresponding week(s) for extra enrichment!

Hope this helps. Oh, by the way...I never knew about Easy Classical...looks like a fabulous curriculum, as well. I like how they incorporate both younger and older students....definitely will be looking at this seriously for future science studies!

  17. I found this on their website under FAQ's:

Q: Do I really need the Teacher's Guide?

A: Over two-thirds of the program is contained in the Teacher's Guide. If you only use the Student Books, the program loses the dialogue that is so important and becomes "just another workbook".

I want to incorporate this into our day...though finances is a big obstacle! I think I'll try their sample week 1 lesson without the workbook and see how things go!
