I just picked up the 2nd grade R&S to use with my 1st/3rd grade dgd and dgs. I actually remember having this very same book with at least a couple of my children, but it had been SO long. I think it’s a nice little program without too much extra, which is nice for us just making science a regular subject. I have several of the Apologia books, which I do think we will delve into, and I had forgotten about CGC, which my kids really enjoyed when they were younger. I may need to pick that up and just fill in with some fun stuff - these kids really enjoy crafts/projects.

    CGC?

  2. I emailed the owner twice with question. Took over a week to get a reply and it didn't even answer my question. I was looking at science. I did order one or two of the books as they looked good enough to keep.

  3. I used it a few years ago and we are going back next year. I love the flexibility -- so many different resources scheduled so you can use what you want. I love all the extras-- maps, cool histories, timeline, coloring pages, crafts...I love having everyone on the same topic. I like that I can do a lot some weeks, little on others...and do it according to our needs.

Thx! Why did you leave and why r you returning? What spines did/are you using?

It's our first go at it. We have SOTW, Usborne and KF. I love the books lists. I want to do it all but know that will "kill the puppy". I love the idea of the younger book and the Cool Histories, maps and coloring pages...

  4. We use FixIt grammar and I thought we would add in diagramming a sentence or two a week. Does anyone know if someone has already created this wheel? Or a good resource to teach how to diagram?

  5. Easy to accelerate Fix-It. I think a lot of people get uncomfortable with the very gentle introduction and built in review. When looking at the schedule there are weeks where nothing new is introduced, just review of previous concepts. And concepts are very gently introduces and folded into the lessons. Since only one sentence is worked on per day it can seem exceedingly light. It won't work for everyone. However, at least for my kids, they retained so much more and were able to apply it more effectively in writing in other subjects by using this approach than anything else they had been exposed to.

Definitely need the TM even though the lessons are written to the student. The TM is a huge help. Monday we talk about the new concept for the week. Then the kids do the sentences the rest of the week but come to me if they have any questions they can't figure out the answer to (rare). Then I pull out the TM when they have finished all 4 sentences (sometimes they do them all on the same day, sometimes over two days and sometimes over 4 days, depending on our schedule and their motivation) and we review the sentences done that week. We discuss and I give feedback. Doesn't take very long but the discussion really helps solidify things. They correct anything that needs correcting during our discussion.

    thx. Super helpful!

  6. I have never tried that program. I have kiddos in FLL and also in Well ordered language from CAP. I want ALL from WTM press when it comes out.

I was really disappointed with Hake. I feel like our year was wasted.

this. Our year with HAKE has been a waste. We are going to try FixIt fast for bigs and slower for littles. We will add in our own diagramming.

  7. We had the same problem with Hake. Nothing stuck with my daughter. She made the same mistakes in every lesson. We've tried Fix It in the past and we're not huge fans of it either. It felt somewhat scattered. I didn't feel it introduced concepts very incrementally. And it didn't feel like enough for me. Not enough review and practice for concepts. But that's just my opinion. I'm struggling to find a grammar program that I like. I'm going to try the new one from Susan Wise Bauer when it comes out this year. I'm hoping we like that one.

did u do the old or new FixIt?

  8. What about

    Math TT

Writing online class for the big 3 and WWE for the littles

SOTW for the 7th on down--audible and then the older two can narrate the Kingfisher and Usborne. One day written and one day oral. Add it lit that goes with the time period choosing from the Sonlight and other lists. Do as many audio as possible.

    Fixit Grammar for everyone

    Mystery science

High schooler. I got the local schools requirements.m and followed that. We did a few classes at home and a few at a local Home school coop.

    Math home

    Biology coop

    Spanish coop

    Orchestra coop

    English home

    Geography/govt home

I hade a few hard and a few easy.

Just a thought. We school 9th, 8th, 5,3,1 and prek (SN) over here. Gotta find what works.

  9. The intermediate books I "think" are the classroom version.

There are fewer lessons but cover the same material. I moved a child to them because they have more visual examples. I also bought the workbook that has hints and planned out space to work each problem. My kiddo was NOT ready for the soft skill of copying the problem to a notebook and then working the problem. The workbook helps to cut down that step. The warmup book makes the daily review manageable. Now it happens daily. Overall I have been happy. I see success that I was not seeing with the older grade 3 program. I plan to use grade 4 when she finishes grade 3. We learn two lessons a day and work the problems to the second lesson and are no longer doing math at 3 pm.

  10. We use and live the Hake grammar. My older kids did the writing with it. Actually did each essay type 3 times this year. My 5th grader did a theme book from IEW, she needed more structure.

  11. Interesting. We have a 3rd grader using FLL and she is the only one in the family who can identify parts of speech when we do Latin as a group.

I like Saxon grammar. Independent and thorough. I feel like something is missing in FixIt! As I own most of it but can't bring the kids to use it. Maybe as a summer review or and off year for grammar...
