  1. I bought Horizons health to use with my DD, but I haven't started it yet- it seems geared to a classroom to me, with books to get and puppet shows and just a lot of stuff that is kind of overkill, I think, for one child.

Has anyone used Abeka health? It looks a little more self-contained, almost like a worktext, but it's hard to tell online......

Any other health ideas welcome! :)

  2. I just bit the bullet this weekend and placed my orders for curriculum for the next school year! :D Anyone else? I'd love to hear what everyone is going to do!

For my 2nd grade DD, we're going to do....

MFW Exploring Countries & Cultures (we're doing MFW Adventures currently)

BJU Press 2nd Grade Language Arts (haven't tried this yet; moving on from FLL, which was dragging- hoping for good things!)

Spelling Power (we're using this now- we love it!)

    Veritas Press Genesis-Joshua for Bible

Alpha Omega Lifepacs for 2nd grade math (we're using this for math now, and it seems to be fine, so sticking with it for now.)

We're also going to do the Cycle 1 memory work from Classical Conversations on our own at home.

    What about you all? :lurk5:

  3. We are using My Father's World Adventures this year for 1st grade. I like it in a lot of ways and so does my daughter. The problem is that it feels a little "light." For me, especially the Bible and history. She really likes to be challenged. We did Classical Conversations last year and I loved the Veritas Press history cards, so I've been poking around the Veritas Press site lately and I'm really loving their history and Bible.

SO- :) Wondering what your opinions are on MFW and Veritas Press. I could do either next year- or I could do MFW and try to somehow add the Veritas cards....but then I'm not sure about Bible.

Hope I'm making sense, everyone! Can't wait to hear your ideas. Thanks!

  4. Ugh, I'm waffling at the last second!

I used BJU math last year for kindergarten, and my daughter LOVED it. The only reason I didn't get it for this year is that 1) it's expensive and 2) I felt like I had a hard time using the huge teacher's manual.

I bought LIFEPACs since my friend can loan me the teacher's guides and has had good luck with them. Now I'm looking at the LIFEPACs and waffling about my decision! (I haven't seen the teacher's manuals yet- my friend is bringing them to me this weekend.)

Anyone have experience with either of these? Thanks!

  5. The other thing I've been doing a lot lately is throwing a bunch of chicken breasts in a pot of boiling broth (or water)- cook till done, drain, refrigerate, then chop into chunks. You can serve the chicken chunks either hot or cold, with a variety of sauces (Ranch, teriyaki, BBQ, etc.) My kids LOVE that! Or you can freeze the chunks and pull them out later to throw in a casserole or make a chicken pot pie.

  6. Definitely the crockpot. The library has lots of cookbooks.

Here's one of our favorite slow cooker ones- healthy, yummy, and cheap to make....

    16 oz. can pinto beans

    16 oz. can navy beans

    16 oz. can black beans

    16 oz. can kidney beans

1-2 lbs. ground turkey, browned and drained

    8 oz. pkg. frozen corn

    28 oz. can diced tomatoes

    1 c. onion, diced

    4-5 stalks celery, diced

2- 1 oz. pkgs. dried ranch salad dressing mix

    1 envelope taco seasoning

    2 cans chicken broth

Drain and rinse all beans- mix all ingredients and cook in slow cooker for 6-8 hours on low.

There are lots of variations you can do- use beef or TVP instead of the turkey, use more of one kind of beans and less of another, or add more onion or less celery, etc. Just experiment! :)

  7. So, we just completed kindergarten....for that year, I had a plastic tote that I put all of her completed papers/projects in. At year end, I just put them in a cardboard box and sealed it with tape.

Trying to decide what to do for this year.....do I paperclip each day's work and mark it with the date? Do I keep all the completed pages separated by subject instead? What do you all do?

  8. I've been exploring the ideas of teaching Latin and Greek in homeschool....we're planning to do Prima Latina this year, but I know lots of families who do Greek. What are the reasons for each, as far as how you would decide to do one or the other or both? Is there a "typical" classical approach to Latin and/or Greek?

  9. I'm with the other ladies in that I call my DD a "kindergartener" regardless of what level of work she's doing. To me that's a moot point. We chucked our K curriculum around October and we've been doing 1st grade materials first. Obviously, however, I'm not going to call her a 1st grader and then have her be super young in her co-op and all activities. When I submit my list of curricula to the state, in the blank for "kindergarten" math I'll just put "Math Mammoth Grade 1" or whatever. For instance, if a p.s. child is in a remedial or advanced reading group, it doesn't change their grade level. It's just the level of the materials.
