  1. My son works a few hours a week in our business, which makes home insulation products. I will be putting it in his transcript as 'Manufacturing Trades.' Our high school has a vocational center where students can take classes in various similar occupations and they get high school credit for it so I didn't see why my son couldn't either.

  2. I'm in the same boat, though not menopausal yet (I'm 34). I get night sweats when Aunt Flo is in town. They make cooling gel mattress pads that I would dearly love to try but hubby is always freezing even with fleecy sheets and a featherbed. The Company Store has a whole bunch of different mattress pads for different needs. Also consider a lightweight wool blanket; wool helps you regulate your body temperature. LL bean makes nice soft ones that aren't itchy.

  3. I play the piano and sing in our church's worship team. Those are my main musical activities. I dabbled in organ years ago but don't play that anymore. In high school I played the bass clarinet, alto sax and baritone sax.

I own a violin that I would love to learn to play someday when I have time. My son and I are also thinking of learning guitar.

  4. Actually, the 22 is normal and the 16 is U.S. vanity sizing. My mother sews and whenever I have her make me clothes I have to size up on the pattern several sizes above what I usually wear. The larger size is based on international standard measurements and the smaller size is a result of U.S. clothing retailers pandering to our vanity. Don't let it get to you, it's just a number. You are so much more than you dress size.

  5. We love the Bluestocking Press guides as well. Very easy to read and understand and there are several books with accompanying guides. I am planning on doing 2 per year for my high schooler.

ETA: These books are heavily in favor of free market capitalism so if that's not your thing you may not like these.

  6. 1 c warm water

    1 pkg yeast

    2 Tbs olive oil

About 2 tsp salt, more or less according to taste

Flour (I don't measure, just put in what is needed to make a smooth, elastic dough)

Soften yeast in water for about 5 minutes, add oil and salt. Beat flour in until dough sticks together then pour onto floured board. Knead, adding flour as needed until dough is smooth and elastic. Place in oiled bowl and rise until doubled (usually around 1.5 hours for me). You can use without rising; crust will be thinner and crispier.

I use a large round stone and pre bake for 20 minutes at 375, then add toppings and bake until cheese is melted.

  7. I also agree about the 17K seeming high for state taxes. We making a decent living and still owed under 5K to our state for 2015.

If they indeed are low income and can prove it they can probably have their tax bill reduced, the IRS and most state revenue services will do this. The best thing they can do is to work out a payment arrangement to get it paid off and they definitely should not buy a house or make any other big purchases.

  8. Do not try to deduct office space in your home unless you actually have a dedicated space that is used only for your business. Home office deductions are the easiest way to get flagged for an audit. Too many people try to get away with deducting their den as an office because they do work in there.

You can definitely deduct the laptop if it is purchases for the business.

As far as taxes we pay them quarterly but if you expect little to no tax liability then I don't think you get penalized.

We have an excellent CPA, I highly suggest finding one.

  9. We used to have Ford trucks and their reliability has definitely been going downhill. We just bought a Nissan Armada, which is an SUV that can tow. Nissans get some of the highest reliability ratings. We also have an Infiniti sedan (made by Nissan) that is 8 years old and we have never had to anything to it except routine maintenance.

  10. My favorite mascara is L'Oreal Beauty Tubes mascara. You can add major length with this stuff, it doesn't smudge or flake and washes off with just a wet washcloth. I have tried lots of high end mascaras and this $10 one is my all time favorite.

  11. Ds had them, always when he was overtired and always about 2 hours after bedtime. He would scream and cry for about 20 minutes, then wake up, stop and fall back asleep instantly. I never really figured out how to stop them. I would hold him till he was done and then put him back to bed. He stopped doing it when he was 5 or 6.

  12. I also bake bread and wanted to encourage you to not give up and keep trying. Eventually you will know how it should feel and what it should look like and baking bread will be easy peasy. I also do not use a mixer, I do it all by hand because I don't know when to stop kneading until it feels just right.

I forgot a couple of loaves once and tried to bake them after they rose too much. They came out flat as well. Also, if you put the loaf on a sheet It can expand sideways as well as up so a loaf baked on a sheet will look flatter than a similar size loaf baked on a bread pan.

  13. Have you considered the income tax consequences of adding more income to the household? We had our taxes done yesterday and have concluded that it makes no economic sense for me to work in the family business; I'm basically working for free. Just something to think about.

  14. I don't really like going out in public with wet hair so if I don't have time to dry it I braid it or put it in a bun or claw.

  15. I love, love, love the toners. They really make a huge difference. I even use the one for extremely dry skin on my hands.

I have combination skin with a very oily t zone and here is my routine:

AM-Skin Balancing Cleanser and Toner, 2% BHA liquid, Resist Super Light Antioxidant Serum, CLEAR benzoyl peroxide acne treatment lotion.

PM-same cleanser, toner and serum, 10% AHA Skin Revealing Body Lotion (works great on face too!) and same CLEAR Lotion.

My skin has dramatically improved since I started using PC products a few years ago. It really does seem like a lot but totally worth it! It's like giving yourself a spa treatment twice a day!

ETA: the website has lots of articles explaining why you should use different products like toners.

  16. Another Paula's Choice user. I love that you can get small samples to try out before you buy a bottle of something that won't work. It took me a little bit of trial and error before I found the right mix of products for me but it was totally worth it.

  17. A lot of high schools are doing physical science in 9th grade. We did it in 8th and ds is doing Earth Science this year for 9th, which I also took in 9th grade. I really think that 9th is a transition year; some kids are ready for higher level classes, many are not so even a 7th or 8th grade level class may be more appropriate than a high school one. The ones I consider to really be high school level are Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, in that order (10-12). You really need more math skills for these subjects than most 9th graders have.
