  1. Does anyone have any idea what making insurance companies not for profit or turning them into co-ops would do?

Generally, I'm not big on govt involvement in business but when something like insurance is law, and generally unaffordable to the public, I don't see why we don't force their hand.

As a aside...both Trump and Pence have said that coverage for preexisting conditions should continue. Trump also has said that pharmaceutical companies should be taken to task over prices. I don't know if they are blowing smoke. I guess we can only wait and see.

They go out of business. Maine had a non-profit co-op that started right after the ACA took effect. The first year their premiums were ok, the next year they went up a lot and then they stopped taking new customers and eventually closed down because they were not taking in enough to pay out claims.

  2. We did this one winter with ours and the next summer it ripped (while we were in it, that was fun!) and we had to throw it away. I don't recommend leaving it up. Then again we live in Maine and get more severe winter weather than you do.

  3. It's not ethical but not exactly illegal either. We had one calling us constantly for my SIL a couple of years ago. SIL has never lived with us (she's never even lived in the same state!) has a different last name than us and had actually paid the debt in question. I guess their thought is that if they keep calling your family and friends it will shame you into just paying. It didn't work for SIL-she lawyered up. We also still occasionally get phone calls and mail for the previous owners of our house. It's a giant pain.

  4. The most interesting part to me is that he thinks homeschooled students don't have the same range of educational opportunities as public schooled kids. This may be true in large, wealthy school districts but here in my tiny rural district my son actually has more opportunities in homeschooling than he would in the public school. For example, our high school only offers US History at the high school level. They take 4 years of it. My son is also studying World History so he is learning so much more than his public schooled peers. Also, our school only offers French and Spanish. My son got to choose any language he wanted and is taking German. He will also be taking Economics at some point, which the public school does not offer.

  5. It must be the unconditional love and companionship. My husband had some emotional problems stemming from slight parental neglect as a child. The one thing that has really helped him overcome is his chocolate lab. She has fixed him, in a sense. She is 10 years old and I don't know what we'll do when the time comes for her to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

  6. I have encountered that attitude and I think it's wrong. I have clinical depression and I have to take medication for it. Believe me, I prayed and prayed about it. God's answer to me was to use the medical wisdom he has given us.

I have a SIL who believes that Christians should not be depressed. However, she has never been severely depressed. I think that it's easy to think that Christians shouldn't be depressed or that they need to pray more if you have never experienced the dark pit that is clinical depression. But most of us would never tell a diabetic he shouldn't take insulin, that he should just pray about it.

I am very open about my own struggles because I don't want this to be a taboo subject in the church. I don't hide the fact that I am on medication and I don't hesitate to ask people to pray for me when King's are really dark for me.

  7. Sounds like you should really work on eating more first thing in the morning. I completely understand it being difficult, I don't like to eat in the morning either but eating signals your metabolism that it's time to pick up the pace.

I don't think there are any magic in/out numbers, everyone is different. But under 1000 calories per day is not enough. I find a lot of nutrition and exercise help at girlsgonestrong.com. Just the other day they had an article about women not eating enough.

  8. I only actually shampoo twice a week. The rest of the time I use conditioner only-it will clean your hair without stripping it. Lately I have been using the L'Oreal EverPure smoothing duo for color treated hair. It works great. My hair is healthier than it has been in a long time. There are other ones in that line for different hair types so you would choose the one that works for you.

  9. I can commiserate. I used to be a voracious reader but now I'm so tired in the evening that I just can't do it. It's a bit of an identity crisis for me. I've been making an effort to spend less time on a device and that is helping. I have also given myself permission to just read a page or two at a time-I used to read an entire novel in an evening. I felt better about it when I finally got it through my head that it's ok to read slowly and take weeks or months to read a book.

  10. Well, I started encouraging daily cleansing when my son was about 12 but he didn't actually start doing it until a few months ago (he just turned 15). Now he's shaving and interested in girls, that makes a difference I guess.

I think you are right that skin is just skin but I'm not sure about using an oil cleanser on oily skin. I tried coconut oil on mine once (because it was supposed to prevent acne) and it made me break out. I would get a gentle oil free cleanser with salicylic acid in it and keep it in the shower so it's there when he takes a shower.

  11. I especially hate it when someone walks in WHILE I am cooking and asks what we're having. Look around you! Don't you recognize chicken, a veggie, and can't you see the potatoes in that pot?

My son does this just about every day. It drives me crazy. Lately I have about six meals that I make on rotation so it really shouldn't be too hard to figure out...if you see me making dough, it's pizza. If you see tortillas, it's burritos.

I don't mind the actual making of the food so much as trying to plan meals. I used to be so good at it but lately I have no imagination. If someone would just tell me what to cook, I'll gladly cook it.

  12. You harness them in the car seat and the stroller so they can't escape, I see no difference. You have to do what you have to do to get things done and keep your kids safe. If I had twins or a single that was a handful I would use one.

  13. I had one a few weeks ago and followed up with a visit from "Aunt Flo" the very next week. I was basically down for two weeks and it was horrible. I'm sorry you feel lousy [emoji47]

  14. I heard once a quote by some famous hair stylist that the reason for his success could be attributed to the "grass is always greener" syndrome. I wish I could remember who it was, but he basically said that curly hairs want to be straightened and straight hairs want to be curly, and he makes it all happen.

I say this because I have straight, coarse Asian hair. I'd die for some curls. Heck, I'd maim just for some waves. I think Orphan Annie way cuter than, say, the hair helmet every Asian girl gets as a rite of passage!

It must be true that the grass is always greener because I have always envied Asian women their silky straight hair! I have frizzy wavy hair that is very difficult to manage. If I never had to use heat tools again I would be so happy!
