Exactly...it was originally written for public schools, so no religion.
-
I wonder if it can be done two days a week? And how much is teacher involved? I'm definitely using it for DS, just wondering if DD is going to be wishing she had it, too. I'm assuming DS will be able to do most of it on his own as a 5th grader, but I don't want to be overwhelmed (and I'm not too set on needing full formal science for a 3rd grader.)

I am so excited for this, and so is DS. We LOVED the samples.
-
What about Oak Meadow? It gets rigorous in the later years and at this point is written right to the student.
-
It's kind of like following SWB's recommendations for writing. In the early grades, the kids are waaaaay behind public school standards, but later on....it all even outs or they are ahead.
-
I guess I don't understand. Each lesson of MUS includes 3 pages with review...there is TONS of review in there, IMO. Way more than MM, which DD uses.
-
The order is very different. But for example, by the end of gamma, they are doing huge long multiplication not normally done in third grade...so they are ahead in some places and "behind" in others. It certainly did not hinder DS's math scores last year.

The site is up and running for me. What the OP is discussing is this: http://www.sonlight.com/2012-curriculum-updates.html

I saw that too. After all that! Not ready! Pffft.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: I love it!
MUS (there are so many who love it, but a whole year on addition? OUCH!)
this!
LOL I thought the same....but something about it clicks for DS! 30 lessons on division has me bored! And MM was another I didn't get, bc DS tried it and cried. Then I gave it to DD and she adores it...go figure. :tongue_smilie:

Singapore Math....why so many books and so little teaching?
FIAR...made me dizzy just looking at it.
Noeo Science....too much going on, too many sources, ugh.
La Clase Divertida...yawn...the same video five times?!

WT is a LOT of writing, IMO. My reluctant fourth grader would have cried the very first week!!!!
WWW is working beautifully for him though. We decided to start with 3 to give him a slow and gentle start into writing. He is working on paragraphs now and will work to five paragraph essays next year.

I go to Staples, have the binding cut off, the teacher pages spiral-bound, and the student pages punched with holes. I keep the student pages in a 3-ring binder, taking them from the front and sticking them in the back when completed.
I got both parts spiral bound. I also had them make a copy of the student pages and spiral bind another set, which I'm now using with DD1. I should have made two copies, bc now I'm going to have to buy a set for DD2 one day!

Last try....no one? No great ideas for something you had a lot of fun with?
-
Headsprout is all online....I could see the way it works beings great setup for your child.
-
Oh, I know some of you out there must have some great ideas I have not found yet, or input to help me decide!!!!
-
Me too!

It does have a whole way to segue into blends, but if he knows his sounds I would say its not the best program to start at this point. Fwiw, DS just wasn't ready to blend sounds into words until after age four despite knowing sounds.
-
We LOVED zoo phonics! Did it when DS was little. He learned all the letter sounds at age 3. We had a good time with it, but we took it in a class and did some of it at home later. In ever fully followed through though and when he really learned to read it was with Headsprout.

I'm not so sure DS is ready for HO next year for 5th grade, and ifi wait til he's in 7th and more ready for the writing, DD1 will be in 5th and they can do it together. We have done WP AW, the fit half of American History, and about 6 chapters of SOTW Ancients...lol. Where to now???
My ideas so far are WP CAW, SL B+C followed by D+E, or somehow finding various units to cover (like I'm thinking of doing McHenry's The Elements this spring.) I don't really want religious curriculums despite listing two above. :P I like the lit in those, though, and I want to combine my older two where possible.

I'd love to hear some reviews of winterpromise's new language arts programs! Thanks!

Hmmmm, my 7 yo certainly gets it, as did her brother at age. Our 4 yo is starting to get it. We are very much the same kind of sarcastic around here! ;)

I would go right into 4. It reviews everything anyway.
WWS users with reluctant writers

DS will be 5th grade next year, but I'm not sure if we should start WWS then or the year after. We completed WWE2, and moved on to WWW3 this year, which is going well for him. I'd like to do WWW4 next year, or WWS, or I wonder if I should go back to something like WWE3 or 4 even though I'm not keen on the long dictation.
I thought we were doing ok with our forward motion, but then I read WWS samples in the thread and thought...ugh.:tongue_smilie:
(Not bc WWW is poor...it is just different. Plus DS is using it a year behind grade level.)
WWS looks, to me, like a LOT of writing each day. A big jump from SWB's descriptions for the lower grades.
