We have the Earth Science Rock and Learn DVD here, but haven't watched it yet. We'll do that today! I checked on Amazon and with Prime, we also get the 7-day rental for $1.99. Nice!

Ooh, those Herb Fairy books do look intriguing! We have their Wildcraft board game... Maybe I'll add the books to my wishlist. :) I also need the next 4-pack of LOF elementary - E-H.

Thanks! My kids watch the video of the day on our iPads and occasionly watch other free videos from the app. Is there really that much more content to warrant paying for a subscription?
If you only watch it on your iPad, then I'd say that is by far the best deal. I particularly think the one offering just the 4 videos plus the daily free one is a great deal! But I don't think you get to choose the videos... Anyway, the mobile app version offers the videos and the quizzes. You do miss out on the extras, which in BrainPop Jr are game, activity, lesson ideas, and so on. They also released a new GameOn section with interactive online games. We don't really use the extras much anyway. I do value being able to watch BrainPop on our big desktop computer together, so we're still happy "full subscription" users.
What is the difference between the home plan and the homeschool plan?
Thanks,
Bethany
This coupon is for the Home Plan (I tried Homeschool plan), in which it is one user. The Homeschool Plan offers 1 or 3 user plans, which I'm assuming can be used simultaneously. But the Homeschool 3 user plan price skyrockets to $300 for the BrainPOP/BrainPOPJr combo. Single user, it's the same price as the regular Family Combo, but you can't use the 20% coupon code. Since a family can just watch the videos together or take turns, I don't see the benefit for the Homeschool Multi User plan really.
I wrote up a blog post this morning about Brainpop for more info.

We've been saying grade by age as well now. So my daughter who just turned 8 is in second grade. Much easier! It got too confusing when we tried to fit a curriculum-appropriate grade to her and then she'd tell people she was several grades ahead of what she looked like, hehe.

Nice! I've never seen a Brainpop discount code, I've always just gotten the default subscription. Bummer that I just renewed for the Family combo last month though. I always get the Family Combo as we still want both the regular and Junior versions and the Spanish one automatically gets included. One of these years I'd like to have my daughter listen to the BrainPOP Español portion to practice listening to Spanish.

Yeah, copying it exactly would violate copyright. I made a list a few years back and got it OK'd by Peace Hill Press as I added my own books and left out some of their recommendations that weren't in print or whatnot, so it isn't the exact list in the SOTW Activity Guide.

Aw, I am from Wisconsin and I'd see the Northern Lights coming home from dates when I was in high school. What a romantic way to end the date! They amaze me, I want to take a long vacation somewhere north just to see them again (the lights).

I've been buying seasons from Amazon streaming. With Prime, some of them are free, but sadly, not Big Bang Theory. Here's a link:

Bumping on up because I'm :bigear: too!
Personally I need all my notes to be digital in some way, so I use lots of Google Doc spreadsheets and such. I also installed Evernote on all my pcs, ipads and such a few years back, maybe I should look into it again.

We're Evan Moor Daily Science fans too! The subject just wasn't getting done reliably, but now we do it almost every weekday. I agree with the above ladies, for some reason my daughter loves these workbooks. We follow up with BrainPop videos.

We would go! Early January on a Friday sounds great. I just noticed our homeschool enrichment program had people going very soon but I couldn't go this month.
Has anyone seen the Van Gogh exhibit yet?

There are also these from another WTM member, she has both timeline cards and notebook pages for SOTW 1-2, with 3-4 planned for the future.

Direct Link to SOTW2 notebook pages
I love her timeline cards! However, I think I'd prefer the notebooking pages linked above, as they are just one line, instead of the 3-lined pages - my daughter writes small. Other families might prefer her version though.

Reporting back that we had two instances up at the same time and it worked perfectly fine, not slow at all.

We use Singapore math and don't feel the absolute need to supplement it. We have the HIG, Textbook, workbook, tests, IP and CWP. But for a math-lover as myself, I find other math supplements irresistable. I suspect many math-focused families are the same. We're using Life of Fred Elementary, Dreambox computer learning, and other workbooks from Singaporemath.com. I just ordered Beast Academy.

I'd also recommend Evan-Moor Daily Science, as it sounds like your son can read and learn by himself. We do about a week's worth in one day, as the lessons are very short. Then we'll follow up with a Brainpop video.
I also have more involved science programs, but that is our go-to science that gets done every single week.

Mine works now! Somehow my link was changed. But yay!!!
For a second student (or each additional), instead of paying $39.95, it is only $29.95. Same if you have the same student also have the Content-Area Vocabulary Builder, you save $10 for the additional student. Scratch that, it is $27 for the Content Vocabulary.
Now, to see if the service is slow...

It wasn't slow for us the first month we had it, but now we still cannot log in, so I'm thinking they are still having some technical issues. It's been 3 weeks now that I can't log in, so I sent another ticket to HSBC and will be asking for a refund for our three subscriptions most likely.
I'll get it again, just wait when all their bugs are smoothed out.

Yep, got the email this morning and was going to post this too.

1. You are first given a Pre-test, which I can see the answers my daughter got correct, although she cannot see the right answers.
2. Then the Word List is given, you look over every word and get a mini-question to make sure you understand.
3. Once that is done, you get access to four other parts that test on retention.
4. Next up is the Passage and Questions.
5. Finally is the Post-Test, and after that, words that the student got wrong would be presented one last time.
You can stop in the middle of anything, but you can't progress to the next section (numbered above) until the prior section is finished. At least that's what we've experienced. I can see progress as soon as she finishes anything (pretest, one of the four word tests, etc...).
Every 3-4 lessons, there is a comprehension activity that tests on the prior lessons.

We used to use the books but they'd get forgotten a lot. I was aware of the additional "free online" stuff, but never really used them. The paid online version makes learning (and correcting) effortless. :)
I wonder if mine isn't working because I signed myself up as well as a second student (to do the high school level stuff), and we also have the new CVB vocabulary (social studies/science), which was just offered a month ago. We saw both programs when we signed in for about a week, then only one, now neither work.
We have been so antsy to start in again, we'd do this at the same time!
-
The free site is nothing like the paid version. We love the new online Wordly Wise!
That said... it *is* new, and it hasn't been working for at least two weeks. I have been in contact with HSBC (where I purchased my subscription) every week and there hasn't been any progress made. I got both the regular Wordly Wise vocabulary and the Science/Social Studies Context Vocabulary, and neither works.
I'd wait until this is resolved.

I has this one hanging in our homeschool room for over a year, but it isn't very exciting, as most of the creatures are not recognizable. I do think it's very up-to-date and accurate though.
This Tree of Life one is pretty awesome though! I made a magnetic version of it.

Adding that I also got my large whiteboard from the link that Kel posted from US Markerboard. I am so grateful that she posted a link to that site a few years back (I'm assuming it was her too then), otherwise I wouldn't have splurged on such a purchase.
Please talk to me about what your second grader is doing!
in K-8 Curriculum Board
Posted
My daughter is "second grade" this year, but some subjects she works ahead. But the curriculum we are ahead in, we used from the beginning. It may look like a lot, but she enjoys doing much of this independently. I'd say she averages 3 hours a day, 4 days a week.
