  1. We still do this, at ages 13 and 11. We switch off who reads to who, but both dh and I have a readaloud going with each child all the time. We've gone through so many great books this way--Narnia, LOTR, Harry Potter, etc. I know they will outgrow it someday but we will do it as long as they want to. For dd 13, sometimes we end up talking more than reading :) but I still love it!

We still put our 12 and 9 yr old to bed. Dh reads for a half hour then we both give hugs/kisses, dh prays, and we leave them to read on their own for 45 minutes. Then we tell them lights out. We'll probably keep doing it until they stay up later than we do.
  2. My thoughts exactly.

I think he overdid it. Yeah, she was a snot online. That doesn't mean he has to be a worse snot right back, in public. He's not the immature teenager--she is.

I think it would have been appropriate to take custody of her computer, and have an honest talk about what her expectations are and what the parents' expectations are. What if they really are asking too much housework out of her for her schoolwork to get done properly?

This reaction is not going to bring them closer together. It may feel nice to see a smackdown, but I don't think it was a good idea.

  3. I agree it would be exclamation. 'Nero's' would be used as a possessive adjective in that sentence.

Nero's gregarious and gratuitous exclamation gave you and me tangible rewards.

My son had an online class this morning and after the class, he said that the teacher had said the subject was Nero's. Everyone else thought it was exclamation. I think it is exclamation too.

    What is it?

  4. Well, this is what I *think* we're doing. Subject to change, of course. LOL

My Father's World AHL for History, Lit, Bible

Physical Science (Apologia or something else)

    TT Algebra 1

    Visual Latin w/ Lingua Latina

Fallacy Detective and The Thinking Toolbox

    Band (flute)

And whatever our coop is offering that looks good.

  5. Cornerstone Tutorial Center might offer something like that. Last time I checked, though, it seemed pretty pricey.

I want an outside foreign language class for my elementary/middle school kids. Can anyone recommend a quality source in the Tulsa area?
  6. I use freshly milled flour in my bread machine (a Zojirushi) reguarly, with no problem. I use it for pizza and cinnamon roll dough as well as for bread. Sometimes I use 1/2 and 1/2 and sometimes all whole wheat, but I don't use red wheat, only hard white. And I do add vital wheat gluten.

I have a really good whole wheat bread recipe if you are interested. I think I've shared it here before.

  7. I don't know anything about the Ipod Touch, but my dd and I have a Kindle Fire and Nook Color, respectively. They are *very* similar. The Fire may be a bit faster when surfing the web. I like the way the library and "shelves" are arranged on the NC better than the carousel on the Fire. OTOH, Amazon seems to have better apps and bargain ebooks. The Nook has an SD card space for additional storage; the Fire doesn't, but has extra storage available in the Cloud.

    HTH a bit!

  8. Same here. When they were BRAND new, like the first few days, I may not have gotten to take that morning shower but after that I just made it happen. We did a lot of exersaucers/bouncy seats in the bathroom (and quick showers!) but I managed. It is just something I need to get energized and feel good for the day.

See I don't understand this - I have 3 kids under 5 and I shower every day. Even when they were newborns I showered everyday. To me its a non-negotiable. And no my kids are not some weird angels -they get into everything yet I've just learned how to set them up so I can safely shower. My showers are not short either.

I would die without my daily morning shower -I'd feel icky all day.

  9. I usually just use the dough setting, no matter what kind of flour I'm using, and take it out when the cycle ends. I've never had a problem doing this, and I use freshly ground ww flour most of the time.

That's probably what I'll end up doing most of the time. I made multigrain bread in it for dinner tonight and it worked great, but the shape of the loaf is just so awkward, lol. It kneaded really well though, and was much quieter than I thought it would be. The way I've heard some people talk about bread machines, I thought it was going to sound like a jet taking off in my kitchen. :tongue_smilie:

When you just use it for kneading and rising, do you use the dough setting, or do you use the setting for the specific kind of bread and just take it out after the first rise?

  10. Yay! I love my bread machine. I use mine often for bread, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, etc.. Here is my all-time favorite whole wheat bread recipe (and I've tried several!). I got it from a Leanne Ely cookbook.

    Whole Wheat bread

    1 c. + 2 T. water

    2 T. honey

    2 t. yeast

    1 1/2 t. sea salt

    3 c. whole wheat flour

    3 T. Gluten

It is sooo good! I usually use the dough cycle and bake it myself but you can also bake it in the machine, of course.

  11. That sounds complicated. :tongue_smilie: When you say you didn't use an SD card, does that mean that it is permanent? In other words, can you go back to your stock Nook settings if you wanted to?

I rooted my new Nook tablet. Once you root and block the OTA's, you don't have access to the Nook store on your device anymore. I buy my books online and side load to my Nook. I have full access to Android Market, Kindle apps and reader, as well as the Kobo reader app, which I must say is WAY better than B&N content. I wanted it for the incredible fast processor and OS. I installed different launcher and debloated it as well.

I followed the instructions over on XDS developers boards. I did it myself without the use of an SD card.

  12. The Kindle is a tablet. After comparing the two (NC and Fire) the main differences to *me* seem to be that there are more apps/books available on Amazon than on Barnes & Noble, and the NC has an SC card and the Fire doesn't. The Fire instead has extra "Cloud" storage which of course you must be online to access.

I thought the Kindle Fire was a tablet. I was going to do this to my color Nook in the hopes of ending up with something like a Kindle Fire. What will I have?
  13. That's good to know! :) My dd is currently in PreAlgebra and I plan to have her continue with TT throughout high school.

I don't know about the "level" for TT...all I know is that my oldes ds used TT algebra in 8th grade through pre-cal in 11, then went to cc for calculus. (As a high school senior, he got the highest grade in the class.) He got great scores on the SAT which translated into a great scholarship.

Youngest ds will use pre-algebra in 7th, and then follow the same course as his older brother. I expect he'll do well, too.

  14. You may be right. I just remember being frustrated how there were so many problems like that and it never got any harder.

But like I said, I like TT overall and am still using it. TT5 taught my dd how to do multi-digit multiplication and long division without the daily tears and head banging we were experiencing with MUS. I just wish they went a little deeper into some of the topics, that's all.

If kids learn more than that about percents in 5th grade in public school, it's news to me. In my schooling that was a middle school/pre-Algebra topic. One could fairly argue that there's no reason many kids CAN'T learn more about percents in 5th grade, but I don't think it's typical? My husband and I once researched the whole scope and sequence of math in public schools because we were commenting on how strange it was that the average student does not get to Algebra until 9th or 10th grade. That doesn't seem necessary. But there it is.
  15. What were the advantages to doing this? What did you want your NC to do that it couldn't do without being rooted? And did you do it yourself, or buy one of the SD cards with the OS preloaded?

I got a Nook Color for Christmas, and my dd got a Kindle Fire. So we have been having fun comparing the two. They are very similar but there seems to be more free books and apps available for the Kindle than for the Nook. So I'm just wondering if it would be worth it to root it so I could download the Kindle app. I have never even owned a smartphone, so I'm not very technically savvy. ;)

    Any opinions appreciated!

  16. True, the Scope & Sequence may be the same, but the level of difficulty of the problems is much lower than in many other programs. For example, my dd started TT in 5th grade using it on grade level. When the concept of 'percents' was introduced, all of the problems were based on 100. For example, "25 out of 100 monkeys love bananas. What percent of all monkeys love bananas? And obviously the answer is 25%. But the problem is, it never got any harder. Even through grade 6 (as far as I can remember--we don't own those levels any more). So yes, in the S&S, 'percents' are covered. But not to the level that they should be, IMO.

Having said all that, I still have my dd in TT. She hates math with a passion and this is the only program I have found that doesn't bring her to tears daily. But you do need to understand that it is behind other programs, and supplement when necessary. I have supplemented with the Key to books in the past, and I know some moms who use Life of Fred.

If you look at the Index/Scope & sequence and compare it with ANY other math programme of it's grade it matches. It might be more a matter of taste.

We use it. We like it. Both my children placed a grade ahead in the placement tests. I feel there's a LOT of review between one grade and the next, but that's typical no matter which math programme you use. Skip the review if she doesn't need it. :)

  17. Would this work with wireless internet? We can't get DSL or cable out where we live so we use a Cricket wireless modem that fits into a USB port.

If you already have internet at home you can just buy a wireless router from walmart. Something like this:

    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Belkin-N-150-Wireless-Router/11060711

The least expensive options are usually around $25 or $30. All the of the instructions will be in the box and they are very simple to hook up to your existing internet modem.

ETA: If you have had service a long time and are eligible for upgrade with your current carrier you might be able to get a modem that has wireless built in from them for free. If that's not an option the router from walmart is your best bet.
