  1. Thanks Julie!

Yes I absolutely will miss that schedule!! :) I really feel like that is what keeps us moving forward so well. She will be taking a Worldview class at coop and also has the opportunity for an Economics class (which I know MFW doesn't schedule until 12th grade). So I would probably end up doing something like Notgrass US history for her 2nd semester. So it seems like overkill to purchase the whole  program. Even though part of me hates to give it up!

Glad to know it is doable if we decide to go that route, though. I just wasn't sure how much of the actual assignments would be in the main TM--in the Notes section, etc.

Well, it will help that you've both already done MFW high school.

I think it's possible if you have the teaching materials (American lit supplement, Early American set, and Progeny Press guide).  You'll have most of the main assignments then.  The biggest problem, though, will be scheduling it all out yourself.  You know how much easier it is to use a MFW schedule than to pick up something like Stobaugh's American lit and try to figure out how much to do in a day.  Again, it will help that you're used to MFW materials (the Early American set, for example, is pretty much the same as the British lit set, for example).

Are you subbing out all the rest -- early American history, government, and Bible/Worldviews (or other elective)?

  2. My daughter has done AHL for 9th grade and is finishing up WHL for 10th. We were planning on continuing with MFW for her last two years of high school since we have been pleased with it for the most part, but she has the opportunity to take some outside classes next year that would replace some of the content in MFW. She has enjoyed MFW overall but is also excited about taking the coop classes.

So here's my dilemma. I would still like for her to do a year of American Lit and I like the looks of the choices in MFW US1. How hard would it be just to purchase that part of the program and do it on its own? Would we be missing anything important by not having the main TM for that year?

And if this wouldn't work out, does anyone have any good suggestions for American Lit? I looked at Lightning LIt since we are doing the 7th grade program for ds this year and like it, but it doesn't seem like it covers many books. :/

    TIA!!

  3. We had issues with Turbotax last year when they changed the 1099 format for capital gains/losses. I was totally frustrated and had no idea how to fix it and the software just kept bumping me around and the customer service was terrible and told me to call our investment company. Some one on here raved about Taxact and I looked in to it and filed with them then. Had no issue and everything easily went in correctly the first time by using their prompts for the investments.

Taxact walks you through everything I feel much easier, but also in a more simplified manner. It goes back over everything and double checks at each section and actually gave me a red flag for something and helped me fix my error. It does input info year to year and this year they sent me a notice in the fall to lock in my price then. So, I paid 13.95 for state and federal including inputting info in to both. I know Turbotax is more for the level Taxact is naturally without upgrading. Last year, I contacted customer service and there was no wait time and they were kind and helpful.

Look in to it. I feel they are definitely superior for the price.

We just filed with Taxact for about the 5th or 6th year in a row--love it! I usually use the free download option so I don't have to be online all the time (we don't have a great connection out here). This year I paid for the $14.95 option so I could do the State return too--usually I just do it by hand.

I only used TurboTax one year, but I much prefer Taxact. Just seems simpler and more straightforward to me.

  4. We had a similar experience. We used it from 5th grade level all the way through Algebra 1. Honestly I wish I had given up on it much sooner. 6th grade is almost an exact repeat of 5th. The "topics" are all covered so if you look at the table of contents, it seems to all be there. But the problems are very simple. "65 out of 100 monkeys surveyed like bananas. What percentage of monkeys like bananas?" And it never really got harder. This was in 6th grade.

Glad to hear that there are success stories out there, truly. But I wish I had listened to some of the warnings and not spent so much time on it.

I'm sure there will be mixed answers, but IME, it is pretty far behind.  I used TT 3 and 4 while Rebecca was in CLE 300.  After 200, she tested out of over 2/3 of TT 3.  We went through the rest of it and started TT 4 that same year.  Rebecca was constantly saying that she already knew what TT was teaching her,  so we started skipping through 4 - all while she was in the midst of CLE 300.  It got ridiculous and I sold the TT because we were skipping so much it wasn't worth using.

  5. I just installed an above ground pool in our yard and love it. Use it every single day and I know it's clean and my pool rules rule. :)

This. We have had the Walmart type above-ground pools for the last several years and just upgraded to a larger one this year with a salt water filter. The maintenance is really not much work at all. The kids are in it every single day--definitely worth it! The community pools in our area are about a 15 minute drive away and are always super crowded (and who knows how clean the water is). So this works better for us.

  6. Okay this is probably a really dumb question, but I am going to ask anyway. I've been in denial that Google reader is going away, but I guess it is really going to happen so I'm trying to find an alternative. Feedly has gotten pretty good reviews so I'm trying to install it using Firefox. Apparently it is an add-on rather than a web-based service? I've downloaded to Firefox as far as I can tell but I don't know where to find it now that it's downloaded (if that makes sense). I installed it on Chrome just to see if it works and I can access it that way, but I really don't want to switch everything over to Chrome.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

    TIA!!

  7. My dd has the same problem. We used Land End for tankinis for years, until last year when it didn't work for the same reason you mentioned. This year I found her a really cute tankini at Old Navy. It was an XS in the women's sizes. It wasn't even very expensive. It may not hold up as well as the Lands End suits, but I was thrilled to find a swimsuit that fit her, was modest, and that *she* liked. :)

  8. We have both here too. My daughter loves reading books on her Kindle Fire, the backlit screen is too hard on my eyes and I can't read on it for long periods of time. I got a basic Kindle with the e-ink for Christmas and I love it! So much easier to read on IMO. I still love 'real' paper books but I've found quite a few books for the Kindle for free or very cheap so I'm glad I got it.

Kindle. E-ink is awesome for avoiding blue light before sleep, but if you want more of an ipad option and the distraction of games-while-I-should-be-reading, the fire is cool and fun. We have both.

  9. I had one about a year ago, for the same reasons you mentioned. I too googled it ahead of time and was wishing I hadn't. ;) I did take ibuprofen ahead of time and kept taking it throughout the day. But like most others have said, I didn't find it horribly painful, just uncomfortable. I felt a few little 'pinches' and then it was mainly just mild cramping. No pain afterward either.

Hoping it will be mild for you too!

Stupidly I got on the internet and, while some of the women said it hurt but was fine, many said the pain was excruciating and they passed out.

My dr. didn't say a word about taking Advil or whatever ahead of time. A woman on the internet took some and said it was a joke. Okay, now I'm freaking out.I

I think I need to have one next week. Bleeding doesn't stop. I'm 48 and in peri menopause and want to think the bleeding is about peri men. but my dr. says we can't assume that.

I'm at the point where I want to ask for a darvocet or some kind of serious pain killer.

Can you share your experience/your thoughts? I don't even know what kind of pain killer to ask for: Valium, Darvocet? Perc-something?

    TIA,

    Alley

  10. My daughter had trouble with this too. There is a really good tutorial on the Donna Young website under Apologia Physical Science resources--I think it is just called "Unit Conversions." We sat down and went through it together and she finally got it. I like Apologia, but I think his wordiness gets in the way of the explanation on this topic (at least it seemed that way to me). The tutorial on Donna Young is short, simple, and to the point. We're only on Module 3, but I'm sure these types of problems will be coming up again and I think the student really does need to 'get it'.

    HTH!

In module 1 the kids need to complete conversions. They are struggling with it since they can not remember what to put where.

2 questions. A) how important is this knowledge to successful completion of the text? Is it used often, or is it done with as soon as this module is over? and B) if it is very important do you know of a supplement they can use to continue strengthing those problems?

  11. My dd is doing this through a coop, so I don't have to do labs at home, but if I was I would probably want to get a supply kit for convenience. All I bought at first was the textbook and the tests/solutions book. Apologia recently came out with a notebook journal for this and it is really nice. I ended up ordering it even though we are a few modules in to the book. You can see sample pages at the Apologia website.

I didn't get the multimedia CD this year but used it last year with General. It's really nice to have, I kind of wish I'd gone ahead and bought it.

    HTH!

  12. That sounds similar to what my dd is doing, except she is doing Physical Science instead of Biology. One thing we have done to make her day a bit more manageable is doing the Old Testament Challenge together instead of having her write out the answers. I do the Bible reading in the am using the parent's schedule in the guide, and when she gets to that point in her day we go over the questions together. It saves a bit of time.

Sorry I don't have more ideas. Is there one thing in particular that is taking too long? Maybe this will give you a 'bump' anyway. :)

  13. Wow! This is us, almost word for word, except I happen to love getting the mail every day. :)

My dh 'hates' that I often forget to have my cell phone with me. Last weekend he went hunting with his brother and their vehicle broke down. He called my phone, texted dd, and texted the home computer (we have wireless internet with SNS). Didn't get through to any of us and had to wait until his other brother was available to come get them. He was not happy. LOL

    He:

Hangs his clothes on the bedpost.

Won't finish the last of anything--milk, cereal, etc. He leaves a teeny, tiny bit in the bottom of the container and puts it away! Then he opens a new one. Drives me insane!

Leaves his shoes and socks (socks balled up) wherever he is when he takes them off.

    I:

Never have my cell phone with me.

Always forget to hang up his shirts before they get wrinkled in the dryer or clothes basket.

Never get the mail and it piles up for days.

  14. This is what I make too. For a few years they changed the recipe on the Kraft jar and I had to google "Fantasy Fudge" to find it. Not sure if it is back on the jar this season.

I have had it fail before, but I finally figured out to set the kitchen timer for 5 minutes as soon as it comes to a full rolling boil. Remove it from heat as soon as the timer goes off. Since I've started doing that, it has never failed. :)

I don't know if it's fail proof but I just make the Fantasy Fudge recipe that is on the Kraft marshmallow creme jar. My sister swears it is the easiest recipe and we love it so I've never tried anything else.

What do you mean by "fail proof?"

  15. My dd (9th grade) is taking Spanish I this year through a coop. We are very happy with the instructor and class, but I'm looking for something to supplement what she is learning there. Any ideas? I can't spend a lot of $$ so something like Rosetta Stone is out. ;) I just want something that reviews the basic vocab and grammar usually covered in Spanish I. The class moves fairly quickly and I want to make sure she doesn't get behind.

    Any ideas?

  16. It's working really well here so far too! I love having it all laid out for me. I don't mind tweaking if I need to here and there (though honestly, I haven't much yet). My daughter likes having a schedule to follow and I do check in with her now and then to see what she's doing (way more often than once a week, as the schedule suggests). We're only a few weeks in, but I'm really glad I chose this for her first year of high school.

We are really enjoying MFW Ancient History. The materials and books are really nice and there's plenty of work, definitely a full curriculum. I can't speak for he others, but My Father's World has been great for us so far.
  17. That's exactly what my daughter's complaint about Apologia is--she says he goes on and on and ON, until she has forgotten what the original point was. I already knew she hated it from using General last year, but I thought it would be easier just to use the Apologia since that's what the class was based on. I'm kind of re-thinking that at this point, though.

Neither of us like the wordy chatty style of Apologia, but I had it since my oldest used it a few years ago and I didn't want to buy another program with the budget already a bit tight. So, we started this year with Apologia Physical after doing BJU Earth and Space last year. It was just a flop and we both dreaded the subject. Looking at our local options, dd did not like BJU Physical. She said it was too much, too dry (yes, she used the "boring" word). I liked the look of it, but I could see her point. We both looked at Abeka and actually liked it. The text is colorful with many pictures, diagrams, and illustrations. There are "real world" applications that help explain the concepts. I was afraid it would not be "enough" because it appears to be a smaller text than either BJU or Apologia. But, Abeka does not waste any words. Each sentence is full of information and packs a punch. I'm not a big Abeka fan honestly. But, this text has proven to be a good choice for us.
  18. Just curious, why did you switch from Apologia Physical and do you like Abeka better? My daughter is doing Apologia along with a coop lab class and she hates it (the Apologia, not the class). I looked at the Abeka and she likes the looks of that better, but it would be more work to rearrange the readings to match up with the labs. OTOH, it could be a looong year if she doesn't start liking the Apologia book better. :glare:

We started school last week and so far I've changed math and science! Anyone else made any changes??

Math: Saxon 1/2 to Horizons Pre-Algebra

Science: Apologia Physical to Abeka Physical

  19. That sounds like a good plan. She did kind of like the Key to books when we were using them (or at least she didn't hate them! lol). The only reason I say video-based is I don't remember enough of Algebra myself to teach it to her, but if I watch the videos myself then I can help her if needed. We used TT Prealgebra last year and while it was 'ok' she complained about it a lot (annoying voice, not enough review, etc) so that is why I'm looking around a bit. I know she's not going to *love* anything she does for math but I want it to be as painless as possible.

Thanks, everyone, for all your suggestions!!

I've been using MUS Algebra I for my math struggler, but she won't go near a program that's on the computer and doesn't want anything to do with math videos either.

She is almost done with MUS Algebra I. My plan now is to move on to MUS Geometry, but also add in the Key to Algebra booklets for extra review and to go in a little more depth. I know that MUS Geometry is going to review algebra, but it isn't going to be in any more depth than it has already covered and I know that Key to goes deeper. I'm also fine with taking two years to go through Key to Algebra and MUS Geometry together. I just don't know yet if my dd will agree to working through Key to Algebra along with MUS Geometry.
