  1. Today I will give an example. I asked my daughter to go get her glasses because she forgot to put them on. She whined and got silly. I ignored her and told her that if she wanted to watch Wild Kratts today she needed to get some things done like this and school work. We did some school this morning and I gave her clear instructions and how long each session would last. We also did some swinging and heavy work before we started. She did better until we got to some math facts and she started whining and getting silly. I ignored it and said I would work with her and we would use some manipulatives. She did better and held it together better. When she was done with school I told her how proud I was that she finished even through some silliness and how she was able to pull herself back and get through it. She got to watch Wild Kratts. I am going to look into ABA therapy if our insurance pays for it. I have to do a lot diy stuff as well. We are getting vision therapy and allergy shots right now so adding another therapy is too much right now. My OT comes to my house and has a lot of experience with spd. I am not going to change OT's right now. I can't handle another appointment to go to. I bought some of the social curriculum and I will start that soon.
  2. My 9 year old daughter is high functioning autism and ADHD. She is about a first grade level math still in some areas. I am trying to figure out what curriculum to use. She did Singapore math in her public school in K and 1st grade. I wanted to use it but it looked hard for me to teach. I have been doing CLE math in which I like but she seems to be just going through the motions and not really understanding math. I love the looks of Right start math and may use it for my first grade son. I know everyone likes math u see but my daughter really thrives on fun colored pages. She actually likes an Abeka math first grade workbook that we have to use as well. She likes all the animal pictures and cute pages. Do you think Abeka math would be ok for a visual type non-mathy kid? Singapore? Right start? I don't really want to do Math u see. I don't know why I just don't like the teachers manual and my daughter doesn't like the blocks.

  4. We have an OT that comes once a week and does exercises with her. We try to do them three times a day and I have noticed the weighted vest helps as well. She will also get silly with the OT and start saying inappropriate things like butt and fart. The OT says it's almost like her adrenaline is so high and it's a fight or flight response and she can't down regulate. I do think she is also doing it when anxious or stressed and wanting to get out of the situations like with math. I will try to stay on top of the OT exercises. She hates the trampoline. She says it hurts her head.
  5. My daughter was recently diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, and anxiety. She has sensory issues as well. How do you handle the extreme silliness that sometimes disrupts school. It's like I just have to stop everything we are doing and change around things. I sometimes have to do OT type stuff which has also been getting hard to get her to do as well. She is high functioning but sometimes school gets drug out all day from off and on silly behaviors. She had a math tutor the other day and she was silly and almost rude the whole time. The tutor didn't know how to get her out of it. I know it's sensory issues. She gets bored so fast and just spins out of control.
  6. She does have vision problems. She wears glasses and has to patch her one eye two hours a day but it's not helping that much. She also has sensory processing disorder. I am the same way with reading though. If it's not something I am interested I I can't retain anything I read.
  7. The grammaropolis idea looks awesome! Thanks. That's right up her alley. She likes jumping around and fast crazy music so this is so her lol.
  8. Anything that I read aloud to her goes through one ear and out the other unless it has neat pictures and it's about animals etc. I tried Story of the World and she said she listened but when I asked her questions she said she had no idea what I just read and that it was so boring. I tried first language lessons and she was bored to tears. She used to read chapter books this summer but is now saying they are too long and boring.
  9. My daughter is 8 and second grade. She reads on a third or fourth grade level. She hates all LA I have tried. She is extremely wiggly and has sensory issues. She used to read chapter books but says she doesn't like them anymore. Do you recommend a Language arts program for more kinesthetic and visual kids? I have tried Language lessons, All About Reading, and christian light.
  10. What about christian light language arts?
  11. I am afraid sing spell would be too easy or too much singing. He isn't a singer but maybe he needs that lol.
  12. Also the person that tested her said she has dysgraphia.
  13. I need ideas on a curriculum that's not overwhelming to use for my almost 6 yr old kindergartener and 8 yr old who is second grade but a good reader. My 8 year old has sensory processing disorder and gets overwhelmed quick. We had her tested with Christian cottage and they recommended Learning Rivers reading program which has writing and everything included. Has anyone heard of this? It uses a metronome to use with the reading etc.
  14. I am confused now. Some people tell me more traditional and others Math U see. Thanks for all the comments though.
  15. Also how do you get a child to stop counting to figure out math?
  16. I have heard that is good and CLE? I would think manipulatives would help a sensory kid a lot? I was thinking a more traditional program would be good like you said. I am a little nervous about drilling her a lot though.
  17. My daughter is 8 and has recently been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. We are getting occupational therapy for her which is helping some. This is our first year homeschooling as she did K and 1st grade at a public charter school. They did singapore math with her at school, but I don't think she listened well and learned much in her math classes. I bought singapore and started that with her but at the first grade level. We also got saxon through our homeschool co-op. We have been doing singapore 1a and she is really struggling witht he number bonds. She doesn't know her money, time, etc. She can count to 100 and count by 5's and tens. She doesn't know her math facts very good and definitely not over 5. I am just wondering if Saxon would be better for her since its more traditional or maybe another program like math u see? She is very slow at math and has to sit and count to figure things out. I know singapore is more advanced and hard to understand sometimes. She also has some vision issues and wears glasses. She acts exhausted doing 5-10 minutes of math. I don't want to get to the point where she hates it. Any suggestions?
  18. I think she is barely first grade level math honestly.
  19. I can do whatever I want but we were trying to use the math they gave us. The coop is only one day a week and they don't do math. I looked at the teaching textbooks placement test but I don't think she could do some of it. She was in charter school last year and did singapore 1 math and she didn't grasp any of it. I did a placement test for her from Singapore 1a and she made a 70 on it and was frustrated.
  20. Has anyone used math u see? Our co-op provides us the choice of math u see, teaching textbooks, and Singapore. My daughter was in a charter school and did Singapore but I tried to help her the other day and she didn't really know it well at all. I don't think she learned much in her first grade math class last year. I struggle with trying to explain math at all so I don't know if Singapore is best since the second grade seems a bit much. Any other math you recommend? We want to use teaching textbooks but it doesn't start until 3rd grade.
  21. This will be my first year homeschooling my 2nd grader and Kindergartener. We are signed up for a Coop which provides curriculum choices. We are going to use book shark (sonlight) for a lot of the curriculum. I was looking over the K level language arts and it seems to be a pre-k level. My son is not reading yet but knows all his sounds and letters. My daughter is second grade level. I was wondering if there is another Language arts program that seems stronger? I really didn't want to buy more curriculum but can buy some. We are also going to use explode the code and spelling U see. They will both be doing Singapore math. I pulled my daughter out of a core knowledge charter school. What about wordly wise? That was another choice to add on. Thanks
