  1. We started with MFWK this past year. My dd6, 5 at the time, was already reading, so the phonics part was too "easy" for her. I had to find something else to fill in for phonics (OPGTR). For my sanity, I also had to find a more structured math, so I used a K/1st grade workbook from my local parent/teacher store. We finished that early, and I just started her in Saxon Math 1 with no problems. This is the only "tweeking" I did to the curriculum. Everything else, we did as written, and we LOVED it.

My dd3, about to be 4, tagged long. She wanted to do what her big sis was doing, and would always ask me where her schoolwork was. I just made copies of the sheets that she could do, and supplimented with workbooks from the store. She has learned all her letters and sounds, and has started to sound out CVC words. I still plan on going through it again with her, though, as I want her to have the biblical foundation it provides as well.

For 1st grade this year, I am using most of what is suggested in WTM, plus MFW 1st grade for Bible. The phonics in MFW 1st is still to "easy" for her. My dd3 will do most of the things with us, except for the language arts and math. I have planned different things for her in those areas. They won't truly be together on everything until my dd6 gets to 3rd or 4th. I would have to go back and look at MFW's schedule.

Sorry for the long post, but I HTH. I have truly loved using MFW this past year, and will probably use it through highschool in some shape or form.

  2. Thanks so much for the input! It is so helpful to get advice from those who have "been there, done that". Thanks again!!

I believe that AAS would be a better fit for my dd6. It may even help me! I'm one of those that can read anything you put in front of, but can't spell my way out of a bucket. LOL

    Now to persuade dh...:D

  3. I was all set to use SW A, but I have just seen the AAS materials. What are the pros and cons? Has anyone started with one, and then switched to the other? I am really beginning to think I need to switch to AAS.

    Thanks!

  4. I am agreeing with Spycar Bill - a child can go much farther in math understanding than most adults give credit. HOWEVER - kids don't typically COMMUNICATE their understanding in the standardized format or learn in a perfect line like the pretty scope and sequence charts.

:iagree: My dd(6 yrs today!) started doing Saxon 1 about 4 months ago. She is flying through math at this point. However, she will still try to WRITE some of the numbers reversed and even backwards. She recognizes them all, and can count to infinity, but WRITING them is different. She still reverses some of her letters, too.

My dd(4 next month) sits in and does some of the manipulatives with us. Or, she will be in the floor looking at books or coloring while we are doing lessons. I don't think she is paying attention, but at the strangest times she will reveal the knowledge that she is soaking up. She blows my mind sometimes.

I also agree that you will have to tell Mom to not talk about school. That is just too much pressure. Especially when you are in the process of learning, too!

  5. I had the same feelings when I first read WTM back in Feb (oh, that I had found it sooner! lol). We were already going through MFW K, and I got panicky that it wasn't the right thing for us. After reading many posts on this board and asking questions, I relaxed and realized, it doesn't have to be exactly like the book! I'm bad about following something to the letter, even if I should change it up. Getting better, though! We school year round, so our schedule doesn't follow along the "traditional" school time frame. I have had to learn that the curriulumn doesn't have to follow the "grade" that your kids are in. We are still technically in K, but my dd has been doing 1st grade math since March, and I don't even know where she is in her reading. She is almost to the point of being to read chapter books like the Magic Treehouse ones on her own. Not quite, but almost.

I guess I am just saying like everyone else: relax!:D Easy to type, hard to do!

  6. I tried to use the lesson plan sheet that the school gave us, but it just didn't work for me. I took their idea and tweaked it to my style. I have seen some other posters that have done like me: days across the top, subjects down the side. I am going to check out Donna's site, though, and see if I like her forms better!:001_smile:

  7. I'm excited to see what people have to say about this. I am having somewhat of the same problem with my younger dd. With her, it is like one step forward and 3 steps back. Granted, she won't be 4 until June, so I know it is still early for her. She can recognize beginning sounds (YEA!), but is struggling to blend. We are finishing up MFW K, and have loved it. My olders dd (5, will be 6 this month), did not get much from the reading part of it. She learned to read mostly on her own, and it turned into more of a review. Mostly, she didn't like the reading part. When I found WTM and OPGTTR, we started on that, and she is doing much better with reading. Younger dd has learned her letter sounds and to recognize beginning and ending sounds with MFW K. Learning the letter sounds with MFW K is a bit more fun than OPGTTR. I plan to go back through some of the activities and games again with my younger.

Sorry for going on and on!

Oh, and don't worry about feeling lost about homeschooling. This was our first year, and now that it is under my belt, I feel much more comfortable. I think that MFW K is a wonderful place to get your feet wet. You have enough structure that you don't have to add anything to it, but not so much, that you can't if you want to.

  8. I am planning on using Alpha Omega's LifePac Bible 1 for my 1st grader next year. But when I got it, it looked a little on the "light" side for 1st grade. More like ps or k. Has anyone else used this with their 1st and was it good? What curriculum have you used?

    Thanks!

  9. This coming school year will be our first time with WTM. I am so glad I have it, though! It fits my teaching style, but has plenty of freedom for me to work the curricula to my children's learning styles. It has truly been a God-send for me. I am using most of what she recommends, so I will have to wait to see if I have to switch. We finished math for K early, so we went ahead and started 1st math with Saxon. So far, this has been great for us. I'm even able to use a lot of it with my almost 4 yr old. I hope we have as much success with the rest of the curriculum choices.:)

  10. I have been trying to come up with a name for our "school", and I seem to have writer's block. How did you come up with your school names? I thought it might be fun to hear other's ideas. I have seen some really neat names on this forum.

    Thanks!

  11. I am probably stressing about this way more than I should, but I am not sure how to do reading. I have read the section in WTM about reading in 1st-4th, but I can't wrap my head around it. Book selections are a problem, and when to fit them in. Are we supposed to read selections from the Ancients any time, or only when we get to that time period in the history? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Again, I am sure I am stressing about it way too much, and once we get into the new school year it will come together. At least, I hope!

  12. Hello

I have a K5 and PreK3. We are using MFWAtoZ for K (and PreK, I just do her level), and will be finished at the end of May. I found WTM, and LOVE it. We will be starting 1st grade after a short break (I plan on schooling year round), but was wondering how to include my PreK. I was wondering if anyone had started with WTM with a K and then began including their siblings as they went along. I am not sure how to do K with her and then 1st, when we will have already done it with big sis. Plus, big sis will be in 3rd by that time, and not on Ancients anymore. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated!

Oh, and by the time we start 1st, one will be six, and shortly after the other will turn four. I would just try to find things to keep her busy, but she wants to do what big sis does, and gets upset if I don't have her any "school" work to do.
