  1. :iagree:

Congrats on the newest little one!!!

As far as the future... if you start with MFW you'll probably want to stick with it. It's very very easy to implement with lots of kidlets.

    :iagree:

As you can see in my sig, I have added things for my dd6. This is only because her reading level is well above that of MFW 1st. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't add any more LA to the program. My dd4 will probably go through it as written, as she hasn't quite started to read yet. (Although, she learned most of her letter sounds and is able to identify beginning sounds just by being in the same room with us during school.) Dd6 was reading when she was 4. I do math because I need the structure, and the informal way it is done (in K, at least) made me too nervous. But that's just me!:001_smile: I am not using the math that is suggested with 1st, because we had already started with the Saxon. It is working well, so why switch? I added the history because I wanted to, not because 1st doesn't have it. I have been thinking of stopping formal lessons, and just using it as a read-aloud when we come to a section in the TM of 1st that goes with it. Did that make since?? lol.

IMO, MFW is a wonderful, complete program, and is VERY easy to use with multiple children. Try it, and you will probably find it just what you are looking for. MO, of course!:tongue_smilie:

  2. We are using Saxon 1 now, and my dd6 is flying through it. She is really retaining everything, and is proud of herself. I have had to cut back on some of the review problems, though, because I get the eyes rolling and the, "Mom, I all ready know how to do that" complaint. During K, I used a workbook from the parent teacher store, and she really enjoyed it. When we started Saxon, she missed all the colorful pages, but, oh well. Other than it not being all colorful and "cute-sy", she is enjoying it. I am enjoying the scripted lessons and the information that she is retaining. I plan on using it for as long as it works for her.

Oh, and I plan on using Saxon K with my dd4 when she starts K. Has anyone used this before?

    HTH, and Thanks!

  3. I believe it is a great program for all children. I am using it with my dd6, for 1st grade spelling. You would probably not need to start with level 1, but I don't know exactly where your dc are in spelling. I believe it would be great for both your dc!

  4. We started AAS 1 not quite 3 weeks ago. We are all ready up to step 8, and at the rate my dd seems to be going, we will be finished with 1 long before 1st grade ends. Maybe even get well into level 2. Is this normal? How have your dc progressed through the levels?

    TIA!

  5. Do you do any extra LA with first? I have FLL and WWE, and like them both, but wasn't sure if it as too much with the little bit of LA that is scheduled in the 1st TM. My dd6 is reading well above this, and was wondering if I should just skip it all together and do something different. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  6. My plan is to base their grade level on their age, and their work level on whatever level they are on. For example, we started 1st grade math in the middle of K because my dd6 (5 at the time) was ready for it. Of course, the beginning of 1st grade math was a repeat of what we had already been doing, and we didn't get to new material until she was 6. I don't know if you would call her an early or late b'day, 'cause I have no idea what the cut-off dates are for where we live. If it turns out that we homeschool to the end, I plan on her graduating at 17 or 18, but her work by that time may be courses from the jr. college, and not "highschool" courses anymore. We'll just have to wait and see!

  7. Thank you, Donna! As we have been going through this year, I have begun to lean more and more towards following MFW completely. I have loved it since we started last year with K, and I don't really know why I have strayed away from it this year. Oh well. Live and learn, I guess!

Thanks again for your insight and encouragement!

  8. We are using FLL and WWE 1 at the same time. I noticed that they do seem to match up well. I have not made my dd do the enrichment activities in FLL. I think that it would be just too much writing for her at this time. She doesn't like to write as it is, and I think doing all the writing would turn into a war. :tongue_smilie: However, if your dc love to write, then I don't know why you would not want to give them the extra practice :D.

  9. If memory serves me correctly, I think a Magic Tree House book was listed in the AG for SOTW 3.

We are in SOTW 1, and MTH is listed in the AG. It's the one about the mummies.

I like the books, myself, and don't have a problem with my dc reading them. Although, I too, don't really like the "magic" aspect. I have not read any of the Merlin ones, and am not sure if they follow the same pattern as the regular MTH. Anyone read/use those?

  10. I did the same thing, and was so upset that my dh told me to just get MFW and see if I could work the other into it. Thankfully, we are just in 1st and K, so it hasn't been hard to blend what I got originally with the MFW curriculum.

I am having a hard time with wanting to follow the history time frame from WTM, though. MFW doesn't exactly follow it. I like the idea of going through the 4 time periods 3 times, and not doing US history until it "fits" in with the rest of the timeline. I have been thinking of skipping around in MFW to make it fit. Has anyone else done this?

  11. Before I got my 2x3 board, I planned on using a smaller board that I already had. After I got all the tiles out, I found that even just having the alphabet letters on the small one wouldn't work. They went across the top and down one side! I did go ahead and get the 2x3 board, and it has worked out much better. I can lay it on the table, and have two dc on either side.

I love the fridge idea, too. I never thought of that, even though I have the Leapfrog letters on it! lol!

  12. No, I'm not doing the phonics with my dd6. I didn't do the phonics with her from the K, either, because she was already reading. I am using The Ordinary Parents' Guide to Teaching Reading with her. With my dd4, I am going back over the phonics of K, because there are still a few letters that she gets stuck on. I don't know if I will use the 1st phonics with her or just move her into OPGTR, when she has finished learning all her sounds.

  13. I have a 4 and 6 yr old, too. I did K last year with both of them. They were 3 and 5 at the time. We loved it! This year, I am doing Bible and art/music from 1st Grade with both of them, and redoing the phonics of K with my younger dd. I am using a lot of the things suggested in WTM, but I just can't give MFW up completely. I just love it too much! lol!

Tabrett, I love your plan on using K and 1st. I was wondering if I was the only one that mixed it up, so to speak.

  14. BJU Math is fine. Now put your virtual fingers in your ears and stop reading the other math threads. ;)

I need to take this advice with spelling! lol

I've never found BJU lessons to be long - excess dawdling and daydreaming excluded.

LOL! It's nice to know that my dd is not the only one with dawdling and daydeaming tendencies.

I chose Saxon 1, and haven't been disappointed, but my dd has asked when can we do the math with the pictures again. Before Saxon, I just had her doing a workbook I got from our local parent/teacher store. It was colorful with lots of pictures, similar to BJU. I was going to go with BJU, but like the flow of Saxon better (JMHO).

    Just my $0.02. :)

  15. We will be starting SOTW 1 this year, too, and I plan on just using the maps that came with the student book.

Thankfully, I am blessed to be near an extensive library, and have found almost all the books either at our branch or through interloan. However, the ones I can't find, I plan to buy, probably from Amazon, and if there is a particular title that we fall in love with, I may get it, too.

    HTH!

  16. There's a Meeting Book?

    LOL! That is too funny!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me permission to ditch the meeting book! My dd6 HATES it. I do agree that we need to go over the counting and the new concepts in bold, but once something is mastered, all I can get out of her is eyes rolling, big yawns and heavy sighs.:tongue_smilie:
