  1. I think while a lot of this does tie to religion (in Hinduism, one's duty, Dharma, is a huge part of the foundation) and related to this is culture.

To some cultures, it would be crazy to put your own happiness before your duty. The greater good is emphasized much more than individual happiness. After all, happiness is often fleeting.

This is perhaps more customary in Eastern cultures. Individual liberties and individual happiness is much more prevalent in Western thinking and cultures. "The pursuit of happiness" and such. There is nothing inherently wrong with it, it is just a completely different cultural attitude.

It's just as difficult for some from Eastern cultures to understand placing ones happiness before one's duties.

BTW, I'm not saying there isn't anyone in Western culture that has the "duty first " way of thinking and vice versa, not everyone in Eastern cultures puts their duty before their happiness. My comments are just a generalization.

  2. Did he actually have the endoscopy done? I've read that the blood test only catches a small percentage of celiac cases, however, the biopsies of the small intestine catches 100%. So just because the blood test is negative for the celiac antigen it doesn't mean you don't have it. The endoscopy with biopsy is the only sure way to know.

My oldest ds has an "allergy" to wheat. He gets bad cramps when he eats it. I wanted to stop eating gluten to see if I feel better, but the GI told me not to because it would alter the results of the endoscopy. Now that it is done, I'm going gluten free. At least until I get the lab results back.

Thank for telling me this. I have had chronic nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea for 2 years now. My primary has taken a very laid back and nonchalant attitude about it. I'm finally fed up and went to a GI. He's ordered a battery of tests, and yesterday I had an endoscopy done. All my pictures looked healthy and normal, and the Dr. said we need to wait for the biopsy results to come back.

It's been awhile since I researched this, but I'm almost positive that this is not true. Biopsies are definitely better at diagnosing Celiac Disease, but it's not 100% because they only take "pieces" of your intestine to biopsy here and there. Intestinal damage can happen in some places and not yet affect other places. So if they happen to biopsy areas that have not yet been damaged then the test would come back negative, even if there are other areas that are damaged.

This is one of the reasons we opted not to biopsy our son. He was already doing much better off of gluten and to do the biopsy we would have to have put him back on the gluten (and watch him suffer miserably), have him go under general anesthesia and still not be guaranteed an accurate diagnosis.

  3. Yoga literally means "to yoke with God" in Sanskrit/Hinduism. It's roots are steeped in Hinduism in every which way.

Now anyone can take it, strip it, and add their own clothing to it, nevertheless it doesn't change it at it's core. But if it makes you feel better, go for it :).

  4. The model from HSLDA has what I consider to be an error. If you are filing under the paragraph of the parent having a high school or college degree, their sample says that you will provide a copy of the diploma or transcript upon request. It looks to my (non lawyer eyes) that the law does say that you will provide a copy of the relevant document. My school district did in fact ask for a copy of this.

To my mind, rather than not providing info that isn't legally required, this makes it seem like we couldn't follow the law in submitting our NOI. I found it interesting that only one of the statewide homeschool organizations followed HSLDA's send only if requested format.

I don't have a beef with HSLDA and have been a member for almost a decade. But I don't agree with the forms template in this case.

I don't think there would really be that much of an issue with starting in one district and then changing mid year if you find a place. Just judging by how long it has taken us to get settled places, if you haven't even picked a city at this point, then it might easily be the end of the school year before you are moved in at a new district. Pick the city that seems to be where you spend the most time, has the most permanent address or has the better rep for homeschooling. Since the OP is staying within VA, the testing requirements or other proof of progress requirements would be the same. It's just a matter of where you send the results.

We moved into our district mid year and had no issue with registering with them at that late date (March). Fairfax Co has tons of homeschoolers, so I don't think they really bat an eye anymore.[/QUOTE]

This is very true. I just sent in my NOI 2 weeks ago for the 2010-2011 school year as we just recently moved here. I sent in his test results last Friday. I use the form off of VA Homeschoolers, write a couple sentences about our plans, and a copy of my college degree. Done.

This page also has a good amount of info and some sample NOI's.

    Good luck!!

  5. I love the Hemnes dresser, we bought two of them. The kids' beds and mattresses are from there, our sofa is from there and we have 4 bookcases too.

So far everything has held up nicely. I like that the dressers and beds are made from wood not particle board. They also don't use any glue with formaldehyde in the joints of their furniture.

  6. Oh, and we kept hearing about bad traffic, but that hasn't been our experience at all. I think it must depend on where you live. And really, it must all be relative. We used to live in L.A.

    :iagree:

Really the traffic is nothing compared to traffic in major cities. It would take me maybe 15 minutes instead of 10 to get certain places and the "traffic" times would only last for about 30 minutes in the morning and evening.

Looking in Albemarle County would help as far as housing costs go. Going out a little further would still make for an easy commute to the city center and open up housing options.

If you don't see what you want in Albemarle County, look west at Crozet (great little town), south at North Garden or Scottsville, or north at Ruckersville. The housing costs are much lower but you still have easy access Charlottesville.

  7. Thank you!! This is very informative. But, what is SA??? !

SA=Sodium Ascorbate (Vitamin C with the best absorbency)

The powder form is best because you are able to take higher doses. Natural Factors makes a chewable form, but it's only 500mg each, so you would need to eat a lot of them.

Ds4 has got a nasty cough right now and I'm a bit paranoid about it turning into WC.

(small rant- I hate taking healthy kids to the doctor for their physicals, they always leave sick!!)

  8. I'd say yes it is possible. Ds7 did those same things. He could also point to the letters and numbers and say it's name. He's not gifted or anything, he's quite average, but for whatever reason he learned these things really early. He also walked early and was speaking in good size sentences.

Ds4 didn't utter more than 8 words until sometime after he turned 2 yrs. But I think his sentences now are even better than his big brother's!

  9. Yes! This has happened to me!

After a few months of going gluten free, I decided to eat a hamburger with a bun. In less than 30 minutes, I felt as though I had been hit by a bus!! I told my family that I had to lie down on the sofa. I proceeded to take a loooong nap, and when I woke up, I was incredibly groggy and exhausted. I think it took me a good week or so to get that gluten out of my system.

I've been on/off gluten ever since that episode, and I definitely feel better when I'm off.

I read an article by Dr. Mercola a while back in which he stated that many Americans have gluten sensitivity and don't realize it. A naturopathic doctor we know said that she was experiencing arthritis symptoms, which runs in her family, until she eliminated gluten from her diet.

This is how I feel after eating gluten too. I also feel really tired for the next few days afterwards and my muscle pain increases dramatically.

I don't have celiac disease, but there is definitely some sort of gluten sensitivity going on. This all began just in the past few years.

  10. Okay I've got my order ready! YAY!!

I'm trying the sage, cedar, sweetgrass bar.

Have you tried the solid perfumes? I'm looking for the perfect patchouli, have you tried theirs by any chance. I'm definitely going to get violet.

    Thanks for the rec. :001_smile:

    I hope you like it!

I've gotten the jasmine scented solid perfume and it was great to travel with, it's small and smelled good. It kind of smelled like a blend of jasmine and beeswax though because I think that's the base for it. It's not a strong smell, so only you and those that get really close to can smell it ( unlike regular spray perfumes).

  11. What's a shampoo bar? What's the name of it, how is it different than regular shampoo?

It pretty much just looks like a bar of soap. I love the ones from Prarieland Herbs. I always get the peppermint one. I also get the vinegar rinse from there but it would be just as easy to make it at home.

I used to always use mousse to tame the frizz, but really haven't had to many issues with frizz since using the shampoo bar and vinegar rinse. There are still some days that it frizzes up if it's extremely humid and I go outside with my hair still dripping wet, but if I wait until it's a little dry it stays tame.

  12. Meet the Masters' website has a comparison of the levels, but it's kind of tough to find. I chose level 2 for my not-particularly-artistic 7 year old because the art history lessons looked to be more on her level and since HSBC has has it for half off with access for 3 years, I figured she could run through the lessons again in a year. The HSBC deal ends tomorrow night.

    Here's the link.

    Thank you for the link!

  13. I have a straight, curly, wavy combo.

I've had the same hairstyle years and years. It stays long.

I usually cut a few "face framing" pieces. The straight part of my hair is the underlayers in the back. I've recently been telling the stylist to just cut that part shorter than the rest of my hair. They always look at me like I'm crazy, even when I explain to them that since the rest of my hair is curly/wavy and lifts up then the stick straight part underneath is always much longer and looks weird.

I use a shampoo bar and rinse with an herb infused apple cider vinegar every other day. I don't do anything thing else to it and let it air dry.

The only time I comb it is right before I wash my hair.

  14. I've decided to to get MTM on HSBC but am wavering between purchasing Level One or Level Two.

My boys are 7yrs and almost 5yrs. Ds7 is very artsy and I'm wondering if the level 1 will be too easy or not.

Can anyone tell me if the art projects for level 1 are too simple? If so, would I be able to do level 2 with my younger son as well?

    Thanks!
