  1. Thanks for the 'hugs'. It just bothers me that there are sites that one can go to to find out if there is a sex offender in the neighborhood and where they work, but not one (that I know of) to find out if there's anyone with a history of murder.

I have seen pro-life candidates and groups who lobby for the elimination of all of these.

Those aren't my only concerns, but they are big ones for me. (I would like abortion to remain legal for women who are carrying fetuses with a condition that is incompatible for life, for example.)

Right now I'm in the safe, legal, and rare camp.

These are some of the same thoughts I have. Even about aborting after there is an established heartbeat to some extent. See I don't know where I would draw the line. I don't think any doctor that is against abortion should be forced to have to perform it, though he should be able to refer the patient to someone else. But I also don't think that a prescription for birth control should be withheld if the doctor is anti-birth control. Or that a pharmacist should refuse to fill a morning after pill prescription b/c he/she doesn't believe in it's use.

These are some of the things that would worry me with anti-abortion legislation.

(BTW,I don't think a doc should be forced to lethally inject a death row inmate if he does not believe in the death penalty, but should be able to refer someone else.)

  2. then why are you pro-death penalty?

My reasons for this are biased and personal. Both of my parents were murdered, and the person/persons that violently murdered them are out and about living free and well in society. They could be your neighbors, the roofer that spent a week working at your house, the Best Buy worker that helped you carry the computer to your car, your kids co-worker at a local restaurant...

  3. So are you saying that if someone kills their born child that they should have no consequences "just because they feel it is the best choice for them"? How is killing an unborn child any different? We don't just kill someone who has the potential to make our lives difficult and leave it up to God as a judgement call.

Maybe we should go ahead and legalize murder for all ages... then mabe pro-choicers might see the need for Gov't to step in an "make the choice that is best for the people." I know that is an extreme... but it makes my point on how incredibly rediculous abortion is as an option.

I can see that it may be difficult to see my POV, and no I don't think legalizing murder would change any pro-choicers stance. It's just confusing to me that it's usually those that would rather the gov't stay out of the personal lives of people then say they want the gov't to "make the choice that is best for the people". That's a generalization, not you personally.

  4. Wow, thank you all for your responses. My head is just kind of spinning right now trying to process all of the various insights.

I guess just as it is difficult for some to understand how I see a big difference between a fetus and a 5 year old, it is also difficult for me to understand how the death of either is the same.

I don't know of any magic number for when I think it would be too late for an abortion. I know I certainly think late term abortions should be illegal.

  5. Because there is a difference in taking an innocent life and taking the life of a person that, for all intents and purposes, negated their claims on it.

IOW, some might believe that you can become such a danger to society and the people around you that you have negated your right to life.

I don't think the death penalty is wrong, but I do not agree to how it is presently used in the US.

There are miles of difference between a child and an adult, an innocent and a criminal.

Fair enough, but why are we humans allowed to make that judgement call over whether someone has negated their right to life?

I completely agree, there are huge differences b/w a child and a criminal. What if it's a child criminal?

Murder is murder isn't it, no matter what the situation, someone dies and someone else deliberately caused it.

Again, just curious. These are things I've wondered for a long time, but I don't know anyone IRL I can discuss these things with.

I am pro-choice and pro-death penalty. When I say I'm pro-choice, I'm not pro-abortion. I just think that it's not my right, nor the gov'ts, to decide on what another feels is the best choice for them. Even it's it's immoral, I feel in the end it's between that person and their God and God's Judgement.

However, I don't judge pro-lifer's, again it's their choice to have their own stance. I, personally, could not have an abortion if I were to get pregnant again, even though I really don't plan on having anymore kids.

  6. I know many families who believe their children should stay at home until marriage, but still believe education and a good career are very important to have. Especially daughters.

In these cases, they attend colleges and universities that are commuting distances. They either get married after or during college. The majority of the daughters of the families I know go on to graduate school. To these families, even if their daughters choose to be SAHM's they must still have a solid educational background.

  7. Thank you for the replies!

Tap- A ball would roll down without a nudge I think. It looks like about a 35-40 degree slope.

Wildflower- Thanks for offering to take a look! I will try to figure out a way to cut and paste a pic and pm it to you. It's looks about 30-40 yards by 25 yards.

    :001_smile:

  8. We're looking at purchasing a home soon and we're having a hard time finding one that we both like, (house, location, price).

We came across one the other day that we actually like on 2 points (house, location). However, the back yard is very sloped. We really want something more flat so the kids can run around. (We've been apt renters since marriage and have never had a yard, and I've been dreaming about a yard since ds1 could walk!)

Have any of you been through the process of leveling a yard? How costly would it be? Was it worth it?

  9. What helped ds was to just break all of his crayons in half. We still use only broken crayons around here.

When the writing object is small it forces the child to use the tips of his fingers to grip it instead of using his whole hand.

I also told him this story. The mama and the papa (index and thumb) sit in the front of the car and the kids (middle, ring and pinky) sit in the back.

  10. Thank you both!

I've mostly been looking at secular materials, but I actually do like the idea of bringing God into the various subjects, just not any one person's particular God, if that makes any sense.

References to God are okay, but I'd like to be more a general term.

I don't want to block out a whole section of curricula that could be really great, YKWM.

I will look at TRISMS, thank you, I'd never even heard of it before:001_smile:

  11. I meant to say the last two of of your questions not the first two.

SWB said that she was not putting that lecture's outline up, couldn't hear why.

I do remember her saying that when supporting your thesis to always quote from the book. And keep asking why, this helps construct the paper.

She also recommended two books- Essential Literary Terms and the New Oxford Guide to Writing.

  12. This is what most people just don't get! Yes, there will be SOME people who get some provisions that they were not getting. But MOST people will get less quality health care then they already have had. We are ALL going to get less quality heathy care, rationed health care, administered by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!! How could that possibly be better???? Does ANYBODY think they are capable of doing a good job administering a gigantic beaurocracy?? These beaurocrats don't care about your health! They care that you are dependent on them for everything! They don't care that this bill will kill jobs all over the place! That works for thier ultimate goal - to create dependency. The health care in Canada and Britain is a disaster and we are headed that way. It is absolutly true that in Canada and Britain, there is a WAITING LIST for cancer treatment! Some people DIE because they didn't get life saving treatment in time. Is that what we all want? If this bill goes through, we are all in for trouble......I am petrified.

    :iagree:

This is why those that have the means come from other countries to the US to get treated.

We had federal dental coverage with dh's last job, there were only a couple of dentist to choose from and the wait time for a checkup was almost a year in advance. The office was dingy, wall paper was peeling off the wall, the dentist started talking to me about a filling I supposedly had, when I looked at him and stated that I've never had a filling ever, he just grumbled and walked out.

Fast forward a couple years, to my now private insurance dentist and it almost feels like royal treatment comparatively! Friendly, courteous, clean, accurate!

Now I will say though that the gov't employee health insurance for docs and such we had was great! However, I'm fairly certain this bill is not going to be giving out the equivalent of Gov't Employee healthcare to the masses.

  13. Maybe. It was white flour instead of whole wheat. I don't know how it was made, but my mom might have the recipe. I'll have to check. When I had it for the first time it was at a church event with several different missionaries, and each missionary made one kind of food from the country they were living in. The fry bread was by itself and not served with anything (at least at this event).

The funny thing is, this was the first time I had ever had clam chowder (New England), and I loved it. I think the missionary was serving somewhere in the eastern/New England states, and he served Cambell's New England clam chowder. He said it was easier for this occasion.

I didn't notice that that recipe said whole wheat. It's whole wheat, however it's different from the whole wheat flour here in the US. The look and color of the flour is lighter than regular whole wheat, but not as white as white flour. At Indian grocers it's called Atta flour. The best way to make that flour would be to do a mix of half whole wheat and half white flour.

  14. only refer to God, and not Jesus, Moses, etc.

I'm religious but not Christian, and I'm okay with books or texts that refer to God kind of generally but not any specific God or prophets.

I would just love some resources, and am not trying to be offensive in any way.

Any subject, ds is only 5 right now, but I'd still be interested in knowing which curriculums are like this in later grades.

  15. That reminded me of Indian fry bread. I had that a long time ago, but don't remember how to make it. Any one know?

    Was it Puri?

Here's a recipe if it was:

    http://www.ivcooking.com/p269_83.php

These are generally eaten with something else, so I'd pair with either an Indian vegetable dish (fried potatos or chickpeas are good) or for something a little sweeter the pulp of a mango is great, its called Rus and you can find it in big cans at an Indian grocery store.

  16. Hi Colleen,

I didn't attend the last two on your list for the upper grades, but I did attend the Constructing an Argument one. To be honest, this was the least helpful to me, I'm sure it was great for the older kids and possibly parents of older kids though. It was hard for me to stay engaged with the lecture b/c SWB would ask the kids a question and we couldn't hear their answer so there were these period of silences that would occur and I'm kinda ADD and would lose focus.

It basically outlined how to right a thesis statement and then support your statement throughout the rest of the paper. I didn't take any notes during this lecture since I feel I'm pretty decent at writing a thesis. (Okay, nevermind I'm not anymore, but I was at one time in my long ago life!:tongue_smilie:)

The handouts and overhead pages that were used for most of the workshops can be found online at welltrainedmind.com. Go to speaking engagements and hit Nova conference. The first two from your question have the pages online and from the lectures I did attend they pretty much stuck to everything written.

    smiles,

    Tina
