  1. For a high school student, I would not attempt myself or suggest to others to put high school kids through American History in one semester. Government, yes, but not history. If you're not comfortable teaching Amer. History with whole books, there's nothing wrong with finding a decent text and going with it.

I can't post it right now but I have several main resources to use for both subjects. I'll try and post them later but if you don't see it by this evening, post me a reminder on the board.

  2. Karen,

I've used-- Prentice Hall and Norton. I found my 3 PH texts for little or nothing from a homeschool used book sale. I have their World Lit, American Lit and British Lit. The study questions and writing assignments in these texts are excellent for high school.

Now if you want the "big guns"---

I received 20% off the B&N reg retail price at our local store for a 6-vol set of Norton World Lit. Very cool set. For study material I had to snail-mail a written request to Norton for the 2-vol te set that went with it. Wonderful, wonderful questions, esp the essay variety.

  3. Does anyone have "Flylady's Office in a Bag" along with her "My Control Journal"? http://www.flylady.net/pages/FlyShop_BOIB.asp Is it all that convenient to use? If you don't use this, what do you use to keep stuff together so you can carry it around while running errands and make good use of your spare time while in waiting rooms or where ever you find yourself waiting? Would a messenger bag be as organized? Or would Flylady's Office in a Bag fit inside a messenger bag where you could carry other things that don't fit in the Office in a Bag?

I need more organization and I'm looking for ideas before I spend my money.

    Thanks..

  4. I know alot of folks around here do two years at the CC and then transfer to one of the MD state Us. Have you tried talking to the CC admissions counselors about dual enrollment for high school and college.

Since your ds is already 18yo, I would forgo the path of dual-enrollment. He's old enough to begin earning college credits as a regular CC student. Here in MI we can earn an Assoc Degree at CC and then transfer to 4-yr univ as a third year college student since the MI univ's are required to accept MI Assoc Degree. See how it is where you live.

Our girls took some CC courses which they never studied at home and both of them did fine. Sciences, btw, were minimally covered in our homeschool because neither of our girls are into science, yet both of them have done and are doing well with science in college. Our oldest went straight to 4-yr college with only a high school Chemistry class and a home studied Biology course under her belt. Our youngest only did Biology at home and is now taking Anatomy at CC.

Where we live CC is a notch above high school level but in many courses, is a gentler step before univ level, which makes it a good stepping stone.

  5. If English is your dd's least favorite subject and since she's already in R&S 7, I'd consider tossing R&S aside and letting her complete her grammar studies with a 1-vol text: Warriner's English Grammar and Composition - Third Course. emmanuelbooks.com sells it. All you'd need to purchase:

    Gently used text- $20

    Answer key- $5

Your dd could do this 1 vol text and be done with grammar studies.

If you want her to continue doing yearly grammar through high school, consider having her do the following texts in this order:

Voyages in English, gr 7 (also from emmanuelbooks.com)

    Voyages in English, gr 8

Warriner's English Grammar and Composition - Third Course

But Warriner's would be a good stand alone text to use even without going through Voyages beforehand.

  6. Jenne,

That looks like a nice bag but I guess I'm wanting to find a selection of messenger bags that are more wide, than tall... and of course, well made.

A couple years ago there was a thread about messenger bags and several sites were mentioned. I lost everything on my computer since then so I don't have the company names or their links anymore.
