  1. We just ordered R&S Reading, because we like having the Bible Stories at the center. However, now that we have it, I have two concerns, and I'm wondering if I should stick with CLE:

     

    1) The lessons are LONG! Really long. Every day.

    2) I'm not seeing what I expected in terms of reading comprehension. Is it a solid reading program, or is it more a great bible study program?

     

    I'd love to hear your experiences with either program. Thanks!

  2. Can anyone highlight the differences between these two approaches?? I've looked at samples online, but can't see beyond the first few pages. What do you like/dislike about each?? Has anyone tried both and preferred one over the other?

     

    I'm looking for an oral approach to teaching my youngest child to read.

    She is flying through ETC Primers, but isn't ready to do Book One. I'd like something we can use while snuggling on the couch...

  3. I'm a piano teacher, and I've always required a minimum of 30 min, 5x week from my students, and I see good progress when they do that. A newbie student, just getting started, works up to 20 minutes, then eases up to 30min as he has more material to work with.

     

    Later, after a few years of lessons I like to bump my students up to 45 min. lessons, and then I ask a minimum of 45 min. daily practice.

  4. ...if the child isn't yet ready to make the leap to ETC 1????

     

    My almost 4yo is devouring the ETC primers. This is not me pushing her into schoolwork...rather, it is her dragging me along & begging. Since she craves school so much I figured I'd go ahead and teach her to read. She's really quite competent. She's known the letters and all their sounds since before she turned 2. However, as might be expected, her fine motor skills aren't quite up to speed with her processing abilities. No way she's ready to do ETC 1. So I'm thinking a more oral approach to reading woud be good.

     

    I'm thinking of OPGTR, but don't know if I can stand it - I usually despise scripted anything, and absolutely hate using 100EZ. But, this isn't really about me, and if OPGTR is perfect for her, then I suppose I just need to suck it up and do it! But I thought I'd check & see if there are any other ideas?????

  5. My son (just turned 8) is working his way through CLE 200s. He's on light unit 202. I'm concerned about his speed on his math facts. Can you all give me some insight as to what speed will lay a good solid foundation for the rest of his math learning?

     

    Time tests are currently 2 minutes for 28 problems. He gets the problems all done with time to spare if it is addition, and he barely finishes if it is subtraction. With flash cards, though, he seems slower. Several seconds per card, rather than just rattling off the answers. Should I be concerned, and what can I do to help him boost his speed??

  6. We've worked with level 1 & level 2. Yes, very appropriate for completion in an hour. The only lessons that are longer than that have natural breaking points, (so one part of the project can dry) so it would be easy to manage.

     

    I think the program is designed for group settings, and typical elementary class times. ~30 minutes is pretty typical.

  7. Can ya'll flood me with ideas??

     

    My 5.5yo is having trouble recognizing numbers. He does great with letters (learned them via Letter Factory video), is beginning to read, but can't for the life of him remember what 6,7,8 & 9 look like. He can write them, he can count well, he can figure out how many balls of yarn are in a basket, but he doesn't know which number is which.

     

    We've done flash cards, matching dot patterns to numbers, etc. I'm out of ideas! What would you do???? Oh. He's currently at about week 7 of BJU K5 Math, and does very well except for this one difficulty. I don't want him to continue until he can get over this little glitch....

    We do drawers. Staples carries 6-drawer carts. We use them without wheels, and they stack nicely. I have four sets of the drawers, and stack them, so it makes two "towers" of 12. This is enough for our four kiddos this year - the littles just get 2 or 3 drawers, the older kids use more. I like the drawers better than bags or files, because I love to place the teacher's manual together with the workbook. I have room to place anything needed for the subject all together in one place. My 1st grader's math drawer holds his workbook, teacher's manual, abacus, counting chart, ruler, and timer.

  9. Just to update...I was all set to just order the rest of CLE for my son, as this post suggested. But I decided to have him take the diagnostic test first. And, guess what? The instructions say a student needs to make a 70% to be ready for CLE 3rd grade - he just finished, and scored 80%. No wonder he felt like he wasn't learning anything new! I really didn't think he'd pass, but I guess I've underestimated his level.

     

    We did decide to go with R&S, though, largely because I'm replacing so many aspects of the CLE LA.

    So, he got an 85% on CLE 205 test? Then, just start him on 206 and go from there. CLE is a good language arts program. Sounds like 202 is easy for him and he wants more challenge, so 206 might be a good place to go.

     

    CLE does have lots of review, so some children might feel that they are doing easy material. However, you will find out that the review helps keep the material in their heads. It's not about what they learn- it's about what they retain. CLE keeps reminding them of prior material from time to time so it stays in their little brains. If it is too much review, you can cross out some of the questions in CLE to make it go quicker.

     

    R & S is also a good program. But it doesn't have the continuous review. Some people prefer the mastery approach of R & S. But some young boys don't like to do all the writing.

     

    With CLE, you write in the workbooks, but with R & S, you write on a separate sheet of paper. If you have younger children and will reuse the books, that is great. Or, some people do much of R & S orally if their children don't want to do all the writing. But then, it's not independent work.

     

    CLE will soon be fairly independent for your son. Yes, you could switch to R & S 3rd grade. It is a good, very solid, very thorough program. But, I don't think it's necessary. I would suggest just skipping a couple of Lightunits and continuing with CLE.

  10. It's time to buy something grammar for my 8yo. He's at the 2nd/3rd grade level. I like the look of R&S English, but I'm not sure I can pull it off - I'm teaching 2nd, 1st, and K this year, and have a lively 3yo. We just finished the last bit of CLE LA that I have on the shelf, and I need to pick something else. I like the fairly independent nature of CLE, but we're replacing the spelling, writing and handwriting sections, so I was thinking of getting something that isn't all-in-one.

     

    How long does R&S take each day?

  11. I'm using it with two children right now - K & 1st.

     

    My 1st grader is already reading pretty well, so we're speeding right along, generally folding two lessons together into one sitting. It is a nice transition into first grade for him. We'll slow down once we hit LU 105 & it is time to add Language Arts.

     

    My K'er is also using it, and we just do a couple pages a day. I don't intend for him to complete the whole program this year. It's perfect for him. He knows his capital letters (Letter Factory), and all the sounds, and the LTR workbooks are perfect for learning to write the letters & cement all his new skills. We also use other early readers that are hanging about.

     

    So far, I like the program well enough that I intend to use it with child #4.

  12. Can anyone help me with this?? My son just began CLE LA 202. He commented today that he feels like he's doing first grade work, and is learning nothing new. (Last year-1st grade-he did Saxon Phonics & Shurley Grammar in a private school) I let him take the Unit Test for level 205, which is the highest level lightunit that I have on my shelf. He scored an 85%.

     

    So - I need to purchase more curriculum for him - would it be reasonable for him to jump to Rod and Staff Grade 3 Grammar/Reading? I've looked at samples online, and was planning to go that direction next year, but I'd love the input of someone who has actually used the materials. He reads on a 6th grade level, just turned 8yo, and feels like he ought to be in 3rd grade rather than 2nd. (He did K at home, 1st at home, tested into 2nd at and then 1st again at the private school - he was academically ready for 2nd last year, but maturity was solidly 1st grade)

     

    I suppose we could just move through CLE LA 200 quickly, but we're already replacing writing (WWE), penmanship (Classically cursive), and spelling (R&S Spelling).

  13. What would be the best way to do Veritas online history with my kiddos? I know that if I was doing all the teaching I'd need to combine them all - or lose my sanity! But, if it is happening online....would I start each child in Egypt when they reached 2nd grade??

     

    This year my kiddos are 2nd grade, 1st grade, Kindergarten, and Preschool. We need to decide if we should let our 2nd grader begin Veritas Online. We've thought about delaying another year, but don't want him to fall behind...

     

    Any input?

  14. Primary Phonics readers! My favorite! They are the same publisher as Explode the Code, and tie in very nicely. Several sets available - Use the whole number sets (1, 2, 3, etc.) for a child catching on quickly. If extra practice is needed, toss the "more" sets (1A, 2A, 3A, etc.). These readers are gems because the are so very "decodable", in a way that Bob books are not.

  15. We're working on our school schedule, and I'm wondering how much time to allot to our CLE items? If you use CLE would you mind chiming in with some estimates? That'd be a big help to me!

     

    This is for two of our kids.

     

    Our 2nd grader will be using CLE Math, LA, and Reading. Would 2 hours take care of all three of these subjects?

     

    Our 1st grader will be starting with CLE Math & Learning to Read, and then adding in LA & Reading at the scheduled times.

  16. What have ya'll done in regards to the largish line spacing in the WWE books? I love the "open and go" nature of the workbook, but worry a bit that the line spacing is just not appropriate for the grade. If we go with WWE it'd be for 1st and 2nd grades.

  17. My 7yo 1st grader is spelling very, very well at his private school this year - he's finishing up a year of Saxon Phonics & Spelling, and gets 100% most of the time, occasionally misses a word here or there.

     

    We've been planning on CLE LA for 2nd grade at home. The spelling portion looks way, way easy to me. Is there any need to supplement that? I don't want to hinder his learning, but at the same time, we'll have 2nd, 1st, K, and pre-K next year, and I need to keep things streamlined.

     

    Any input??
