  1. Yes you are probably opening a can of worms with this one lol!  We absolutely love Life of Fred.  The lessons don't take long each day and my son is retaining everything very well from it.  He was struggling in math before.  Now he looks forward to it.

  2. I find RR frustrating too.  I usually just choose the free shipping since I typically don't care when I receive something, but I wanted my last order more quickly and paid for faster shipping and it is taking longer to come than the free shipping ever did.  I didn't receive any kind of backorder notice so I have no idea why the paid shipping should take longer than free shipping.  I'm not comparing them to other companies at all, but I don't think it is ethical to make you wait longer for an order when you paid to have it quickly shipped than when you choose the free shipping.  I feel like they basically stole that money I paid for the faster shipping and it has really turned me off of their company, as it's not just poor customer service, but it is unethical and dishonest.  I think in the future I will be purchasing from other sources.

  3. The truth for me was that even all my AP science in high school never really prepared me for or was necessary for my college level science.  My philosophy is that learning to understand and use the scientific method is the most important thing I can teach my son about science.  So we focus on just the basics with science facts along with lots of labs and activities to make it fun, and spend most of our energy on applying the scientific method to our labs.

  4. What the research has shown is that gradual normal sun exposure does not cause skin cancer and can actually help prevent it since gradually building a tan reduces sun burn risk.  It's getting little to no exposure then burning that causes it.  So in many countries they are now trying to do a better job at educating people that they should be getting out without sunscreen for short times each day since its actually healthy and does not cause skin cancer when done in that way.  So many people started over doing the sunscreen that cases of rickets actually went up a ton.  So, the recommendation is short periods each day with no sunscreen and sunscreen only when out long enough to burn.

  5. I think it just really depends on the industry you are in and the particular job you are going for.  In a lot of cases it really won't matter but for some jobs it may be helpful.  When I was a professor I had multiple students in my office with major meltdowns because they were basically spreading themselves too thin and weren't able to get the work done well because of double majoring.  I advised those students to just pick one major and do it well because they were under way too much stress and pressure trying to do 2 and all their work was suffering because of it.  I had other students though, who did just fine in my classes and as far as I know were able to hand double majors just fine.

  6. The /r/ sound is one of the most common for kids to have trouble with and is in most cases just a simple articulation disorder.  It's so common that in the world of speech therapy materials, there are probably more books on eliciting the /r/ sound than any other sound.  Hopefully you can find someone locally to help since a lot of the articulation therapy to remediate the /r/ sound is hands-on; but, if you can't then there are ways to work on it on Skype too.

  7. I work outside of the home part time and help with my husband's business when at home, and am able to homeschool my 12 year old.  At this age my son is able to do quite a bit of his work independently so the day to day time commitment on my part isn't huge, as long as I can spend a few days a week devoting a bit more time to him.  Once we found the right curriculum and he got used to using it, it became really pretty easy for me since he is old enough to follow his schedule and complete most of his work on his own.  The things he needs help with he knows to just wait and talk to me about when I have time.  Some days I can spend most of the day with him and other days I don't have much time for him at all, but it all seems to balance out just fine.

  8. You should be able to go to ASHA which is the American Speech and Hearing Association and search for a provider in your area.  Also, even if you homeschool, your local school district's SLP can do your testing at least, even if you don't want to get treatment there.  I would try to find local resources first if you can.  Skype is great too but in person is better.  I do speech therapy over Skype but I work with adults, not pediatrics.  Try www.asha.org/findpro

  9. We glanced through the book too and I guess felt the same as Butter, it was pretty funny to us.  My son liked the parts where Fred talked about why his students would do better than the other teacher's students, because he loves the way Fred is so smart at his young age...sort of an empowering thing I guess.  Nothing in the book bothered us at all, we really like what we've read so far.

  10. My son hated writing too and although he doesn't have a adhd, he definitely has similar behavior.  After trying several writing programs we finally have had success with Classical Writing.  I think what he likes about it is that it's broken up into baby steps and the lesson sequence is so predictable.

  11. I am in no way affiliated with the company, but I started the Beachbody home fitness programs about a year ago now and LOVE them.  I started with one called Chalene Extreme, then did P90X3, now Chalene Johnson's PiYo.  What I love about them is that they come with a whole set of DVDs and a schedule so that you do different workouts each day and every few weeks you get entirely new ones to do and everything gets changed up.  I've found them so effective and fun and I never get bored like I used to.

  12. If you want just grammar AG is solid.  If you want a more integrated language arts that includes grammar then MCT would be a great choice.  I don't think MCT uses sentence diagramming in their grammar if that matters to you...it's a personal preference thing as some people care that their kiddos diagram and others don't care.  Do you already have the rest of your language arts covered with only grammar left to decide on?  If so then Analytical Grammar would be my vote...it's a great grammar program and can be done quickly or stretched out with review in between sessions.
