  1. I've been making all our bread products for 12 years.  I have a grain mill and buy the grains in bulk so they are quite inexpensive.  I make the grain into flour with the mill and then make everything with that.  I haven't calculated the cost exactly but it is way cheaper since I use the whole grains and mill them myself.

  2. And what is Connect the Thoughts?

    Connectthethoughts.net

It's one of my favorite course providers now.  The have courses for all ages and we have loved everything we have ordered for upper school so far.  The courses really make kids think and are interesting but break things down enough not to be overwhelming.

  3. The reason speech discrimination doesn't always seem to mesh with level or severity of hearing loss, is that different speech sounds are made at different frequencies and certain speech sounds are more important for the understanding of and discrimination of speech than others.  So one can have a mild loss in a particular range of frequency but have more difficulty with speech or vise versa.

  4. I would start with level 1 as some others have suggested.  If you are still in the research stages though, I would also at least look into Spelling Power.  For us it has worked much better and you only need to purchase the one book for any grade and any number of children.  AAS is a great program of course, but for us Spelling Power is the perfect fit.  Good luck!!

  5. Oh I see, I didn't realize it was only available that way.  We used WWS1 for a bit and I find that Classical Writing has some similarities and so does Writing With the Best.  They use literature selections as models and break down the writing process well.  Essentials in Writing seems to have a different approach to me but we love it too.

  6. I would start the 8th grader in fractions and if it's review then he can move through it quickly but it shouldn't bore him.  There are not tons of review but instead the problems in each chapter are geared towards showing mastery.  I haven't used anything before fractions though so I can't help with the other kiddos.

  7. For socialization my son is involved in volunteering, martial arts, skiing, and swimming.  We have to drive longer to get to our activities but it isn't a big deal most of the year.  In terms of keeping kids occupied...my son has never been bored since be goes hiking or mountain biking all the time, or just goes on nature walks with his dogs, or visits the animals, or cross country skiing etc.  He was bored a lot more often on the city...in the country there are so many more fun things for him to do.

  8. Looking back I was quite sheltered growing up and very ignorant in a lot of ways, although overall I was exceptionally book smart.  Then I went to a liberal arts college and was exposed to the facts the for the first time and my whole world changed.  To me, the idea of a supreme being became no more logical or realistic than the tooth fairy.  All the questions I had about where I came from and why I was here were answered through my education so I didn't have any reason to believe in magic after that.

  9. It really depends on the child.  We use it alone and it is definitely enough and my son retains it well.  I also now personally know 2 students who used it exclusively and attained perfect math scores, one on SAT and one on ACT.  So it can certainly be enough but there are a lot of people who find that it just isn't enough for their students and they need to supplement.  Every kiddo is different and learns differently.  I would try it but make sure to periodically check for retention, we have used different free worksheets online for this.  I periodically give my son worksheets for math that should be review to check that he still remembers it, and I've even used placement tests for other math programs for this too.  Also, we don't just take the bridges until he passes...We usually do all 5 bridges unless they are super easy for him.  We do one chapter/lesson or bridge per day and my son who struggled with and hated math before does great with it ands loves it.  Good luck!

  10. My son and I both love Life of Fred.  My son loves it because the humor is right up his alley, the lessons don't take a long time each day, and he feels like it gives him reasons to learn the math through the story.  What I love about it is that it doesn't take us forever to do the lessons each day, after reviewing the scope and sequence it is more comprehensive than the other math texts to which I compared it, and my son is finally really understanding the math concepts and retaining what he's learning.  Math was stressful for him before and now it's fun.  Good luck with your decision!

  11. EiW and WS are two of the ones I've been trying to decide on..lol.

Both are inexpensive.  Both break things down into small chunks. WS is totally workbook based and EIW is video and workbook which is a pro or con depending on the family.  I feel EIW is a bit less work on the parent's part than WS.
