For those who are celebrating today, just wanted to wish you a blessed St. Nicholas Day! May he leave something fun in your shoe this morning, but most importantly, may his prayers intercede for you this time of year and always!
All who love Nicholas the Saintly,
All who serve Nicholas the Saintly,
Him will Nicholas receive,
And give help in time of need.
Holy Father, Nicholas!

Oh, your daughter sounds like a distraction of the cute variety. :D If I saw her, I'd be sympathetically smiling at you, as I totally can understand a little kid who gets antsy. Sheesh, my 3 year old loves to ask at the most quiet times, "Is church over yet?" Embarrassing!
What I meant and should have explained, as my earlier post was kind of rude, is the distraction that could be avoided. There are a few families with little boys who bring cars to church to help them get through how long it can be. Now, my parish has pews (no judgment, please) so the sound of Matchbox cars on the wood can be loud, and it can really take ones focus off of prayer, the homily or anything else going on during the Liturgy. The sounds of the older ladies complaining about the sound of the cars on wood is even louder!

The older men in my parish are the worst at talking in the back, IMO. Since our church basement/hall is currently being repaired, we have an odd situation where the coffee for after Liturgy must be prepared right outside the nave, and WHOA, the old men (and some older women) really chat it up out there while making the coffee!
I try to ignore it, but it's hard. Being closer to the middle and a tiny bit more up front helped.
And honestly, some kid/parent noise *is* distracting when it's over the top and not the usual quiet explanations. ::::ducking:::: (Sorry, can't remember the ducking smilie.)

PJ, is this the melody for the Nativity Tropar that you mentioned?
That does sound tricky! (If that isn't it, would you mind sharing it?)For us Carpatho-Russians, it's a bit different. (Tone 4, I think?) http://realserver.goarch.org/en/scoba/acrod/audio/festal-troparia/christmas_tropar_english.mp3
As far as participation, the choir at my parish leads with about half of the congregation singing/chanting. We also chant everything except for the Communion Prayer.

Cute! :)

May the prayers of the wonderworker St. Nicholas intercede for all who are going through trials here on this forum, and for all Orthodox (inquirers and soon to be!) Christians going through trying times.
May there be a spot of joy today for those in the midst of suffering, and please God sustain our good and happy times.
And may the children who celebrate his day today enjoy their treats. :)

That recipe sounds good, thanks for sharing it. :)

Oh no, so sorry to hear about this! I hope that you and your family are able to get the stolen items back, but more importantly, I hope you are able to feel safe again.
Praying for you.

Thanks for the explanation, mommaduck. I cannot help but pray for the unity of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Christians so concelebration can be achieved one day.
As far as the headcovering, my question is really about wanting one. :D I wonder if they are only available to be purchased overseas or can they be purchased here. I should really take a trip back to the Ethiopian restaurant DH and I went to and get some courage to ask.

Mommaduck, thanks for offering to pose questions to your friend. I do have a question, but it relates to dress (specifically hair covering), so it's a bit superficial. :o
PJ, I didn't realize that priests could not concelebrate Liturgy, though I figured that in places like mommaduck's area where there is not an established OO parish, the laypeople could partake in Communion. Interesting, and I'm curious of the "why".
I've only had Ethiopian food twice, but oh gosh, it was delicious and seems perfect for fasting. PJ, maybe I could sneak across the country on Pascha, grab some of that awesome Ethiopian spongy bread and make it back in time to have the Easter cheese with my family. :D
And now I'm seriously craving Ethiopian food. LOL

I enjoyed reading that, as well. Thanks for sharing it. :)

:hurray: That's great the principal is so supportive and that your kids are exciting. :)

Just curious if there are any Oriental Orthodox inquirers or members here...?
It seems many here associate with being or looking into Eastern Orthodoxy, but if any Coptics, Ethiopian Tewahedo, Indian, Somali or other OOs are here, would you mind saying hello? :)
BTW, this was sparked by the Greek Orthodox thread, and I didn't want to stray from that conversation by asking this over there.
And also, I am not OO, but I have a deep interest in the Ethiopian path of Orthodoxy, and I feel a strong connection with Coptic Christians, in light of their ongoing struggles.

**DH's tradition has always been to celebrate "Russian Christmas" or "Little Christmas" (aka Old Calendar Christmas) with some small gifts since some of the family is already Orthodox. It was never a big deal -- the Babas and older folks just showed up with gifts, and only the church aspect was left out of it for the Byzantine Catholic side of the family. (Well, they celebrate Theophany, so there is church....)

Initially I was very put out to think that I might have to celebrate Christmas on a different day from what my family does. However, our parish is New Calendar so that didn't happen.
This is my family's first year of "officially"** celebrating Christmas on the Old Calendar, and honestly, my MIL is (was?) more bothered by the idea of us not being able to go to church with her for Christmas. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some thoughts about the logistics of how we'll explain this to the kids... Ok, I'm still working on that, actually. LOL
It actually works out that my daughters have to sing in the choir that they are in at the RC Mass on Christmas Eve, so MIL will go with us to church that evening. So MIL is happy that we'll go to church together on Dec. 24th (for the 25th), but she's still annoyed that we all can't receive Communion together.
I'll just continue to pray on that last thought. ;)

This year Pascha is one week after Easter, so we can wait and get the Peeps and plastic eggs for the hunts on sale! :0)
Woot! :D
And I hope the first day of your fast went well, Aquinas!

I'm a little late, but hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving!

Glory to Jesus Christ! Congrats!

Thank you for the lovely replies.
We had a great day yesterday -- Liturgy in the morning followed by a "blini breakfast" with our priest and the children, came home to goodies in the shoes, then had friends over briefly and the children all played with the train under the tree. Lovely and simple.
