  1. We joined the Y and then signed up for a triathlon class. My three oldest (8,10,12 at the time) really enjoyed the classes. It was a lot of fun to train together. We all loved when we competed in our first 5K, 10K then Tri. Now we do things like the Warrior Dash. We also do a 2 mile free family run every first Saturday. It's fun to look at the website and see our time improve.

We live in CO so all 7 of us mountain bike (a lot!) do the incline, ski and hike.

In the summer they have swim and dashes- open water swims followed by a 5K.

  2. Family Size: paternal-9 maternal-5 (same as me)

Size of your home? My home is larger than both

Number of moves in your lifetime compared to them? Less than my paternal as my grandfather was a captain in the NAVY. More than my maternal as they moved three times is 50 years. Dh and I have had 4 addresses.

Do you have as much of a social support network as they did? I imagine we were equal. Although my paternal grandmother was the epitome of an officer's wife who loved to entertain. :tongue_smilie:

How do you think your nutrition compares to theirs? What about your overall health? My nutrition is not nearly as good as my maternal grandparents. My grandfather was a food chemist. He didn't allow any preservatives or chemicals in their food. When we visited my Nana would go to the bakery once a week and buy donuts for us kids. I will always remember his disapproving smile as we gobbled them up.

Educational Levels? All of us have at least a bachelor's degree

  3. We found this program this year and it is absolutely fabulous! My two older kids are enrolled. The teachers are amazing. I know the tone is rather negative towards cyber schools in general. I'm wondering what the Hive thinks about this type of program.

College Pathways is a unique secondary school, that helps parents provide their children quality pre-collegiate (junior high and high school level) educational options augmented with free early college options for college-ready high school students.

College Pathways seeks to retain the essence of home education by expanding opportunities for advanced education and career preparation at an affordable price.

College Pathways is an innovative alliance between TCA and Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC); a first of its kind partnership in the nation, which allows our students to continue to enjoy their home school education, and augment that education through courses available in a variety of formats. Because our campus is co-located with PPCC, we deliver an educational experience with unique scheduling flexibility and college & career preparation in a safe and supportive learning environment, with access to a seamless, tuition-free transition through high school to college.

College Pathways offers both part-time and full-time options for families who are seeking academic excellence. Our college-preparatory curriculum is delivered through a hybrid online model, combining both classroom and online instruction. This prepares students for high school and college level content. College ready high school students can also qualify for dual enrollment college level courses at PPCC to earn high school credits toward a diploma as well as free college credits toward an associate’s or bachelor’s degree—at the same time!

  4. The tickets are free at the Holocaust museum and Capitol building. We reserved them online.

Most of the attractions are a bit of a walk from the Metro stations. We didn't investigate the Metro bus routes. We bought the unlimited Metro weekly pass which was a mistake because we were there over Memorial Day weekend and could have purchased a cheaper pass. grrr

Our legs were aching at the end of the days. We are very active- swim team, cycling, hiking Pikes Peak several times a year, we all do triathlons... So I was surprised at how exhausted we were at night.

One of my daughters wore Heely (?) shoes which helped when she got tired of walking. Although, the sidewalks were uneven and old. Also she had to put the wheels up at the museums and Arlington.

We took the Metro from the airport. My kids really enjoyed using it for transportation. Living in Colorado Springs we don't experience that kind of life very often. Our hotel was a few blocks from Union Station so we did eat there more than I would have liked but the choices were very limited.

  5. In order of what my family enjoyed the best:

    1. National Archives

    2. Ford's Theater and Peterson House

    3. The Monuments (you could walk most of them in 1/2 a day)

    4. US Capitol (tickets required)

    5. Smithsonians (American History & Air & Space specifically)

    6. Arlington Cemetery (tickets required)

    7. Holocaust Museum (tickets required)

    8. National Portrait Gallery (get a tour and learn about it's Civil War history)

    9. The Spy Museum-especially the gift shop (this one is $)

We stayed in the city near the Capitol using only the Metro for transportation. We did a lot of walking. Everything was further than it looked on the maps. If I did it again I would consider a bus tour or maybe renting a car. :auto:
