  1. Thank you so very much to everyone who replied!

Diana P-Gemiini looks like a fantastic program.

Crimson Wife-Thank you for sharing the links about your child's therapist. I enjoyed looking at her blog/website. I wish I could see more of what a session looks like.

Maize-You are happy with the services on Skype? My son does spanish on Skype and that is where I got the idea. I read where ASHA doesn't recommend Skype as it might not be secure. Has that been a concern or problem?

Jaybe-That is a great idea. I clicked on the link and didn't see where I could contact anyone but I will take a closer look at it. I am sure there are other similar places. I also thought of doing Accent Reduction which would be a different population. Although, I haven't done that service I think it is something I could figure out. I know of a few people who might let me practice on them! haha

Amo_Mia_Fillis-Does your child like Presence learning? I had looked at that along with TinyEye. It seems to me that Presence Learning looks like they have better graphics etc.

    Thank you everyone!!!!

  2. Hi! I have been thinking about the idea of starting an online telepractice. Something that can supplement our income but keep me home to finish homeschooling our youngest. I have been researching this a bit. I will call my national organization to see what info they can share. Just wondering if anyone here has any input into the need and/or how I start off on this endeavor and advice. Thanks so much!!

  3. Hello Hive,

I am hoping that you can make some suggestions for a world history class for my 10th grader.  We are off to a slow start and I am beginning to realize that Sonlight 20th Century World History might not be a good fit, too many books and it is overwhelming trying to navigate the curriculum. I am looking for something more straightforward. I am open to online or textbook or even a video learning situation or a combination.

    Thank you!

  4. We had a fundraising event for my girls sports team. Yes, you walk in and pick off the rack. The consultant replaces her merchandise with a certain style and size and the company sends her items. No control over what pattern. There were some really strange patterns. An ugly yellow with brown buffalo heads was one I recall. My girls each bought an oversized shirt they wear with leggings. It almost looks like a dress but with a roomy pajama look. It was pricier than I wanted to spend. They like the pieces I bought.

  5. Clean socks each night for bed make a huge difference. I found sleeping in fleece blankets under and over you cuts down on dampness. Even with that, in a pop up camper off the ground, cuddling with my husband, with jackets and a hat, I was still so cold that I shook so much with the chills in the middle of the night. My back went into spasms and I couldn't stop chattering my teeth. Eventually, though I stopped shaking. We loved Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellow Stone. Not as crowded and also warmer there. There is a hot spring river there that we went into. We took a drive to Chico Hot Springs and swam in the hot spring pool and took showers on our way home from camping. That was heaven and about $7 a person. It was lovely.

  6. Not a class but individual Skype lessons with speakers from Guatemala: Homeschool Spanish Academy. We like it. They test for placement and go from there with their program. I would sign up sooner than later because they book up fast. You can prebook your sessions for the whole summer. You have to cancel 20 minutes before session in order to not lose the session. They give a 20 minute trial to see if you would like the concept.

  7. Bibiche- I enjoyed your reply! She is interested in history, too. She hasn't really thought of this career before.

MommatHWTK- thanks but she does not enjoy writing, but maybe this style of writing would appeal to her?

Ravin- I could see her liking any of these. Although becoming an attorney takes a lot of time and money. She is too chicken for the military. :)

Basket case- thanks for the book suggestion!!

    Thanks everyone!

  8. Hello everyone! Thank you for your replies. I hadn't thought about the fact that we said she was graduating and applied for colleges and been accepted as a reason she couldn't do another year of high school. I did ask one school, UW-Madison, about it and they didn't say we couldn't do another year of high school but rather they didn't recommend it.

My dd is not itching to get to college although I tell her she will love it once she gets started. She has enjoyed homeschooling so much she wishes she was still 16 and could keep schooling at home. Although she isn't keen on my idea of another year of high school as she feels it would be embarrassing and weird.

After reading your replies I think the local college is where she should go. I do have a feeling she will want to transfer her sophomore year and it will be frustrating a bit because she could have gone to that school (assuming it was one she has been accepted to) as a freshman and received the freshmen merit scholarships. Or if she can stand to go away her freshmen year, Oakland University, due to the advanced nursing programs they offer that it might be easier to get into down the line if she starts there.

    Thanks again!

  9. Hi Everyone. I am traveling and sitting on the edge of the bed in a hotel room trying not to wake my kids so I will just reply generally.

What type of things does she like to build? Good question. She likes to follow directions to assemble anything like put together a shelving unit or a Lego set. She hasn't built anything with wood. She loves Kapla blocks and making things out of the books.

I laughed at Plansrme comment about the tax code book!

I really don't know all there is to being an accountant, pharmacist and many other jobs.

Good point made about visual scanning. I hadn't thought of that. My other child had a problem with that. She doesn't have a problem with reading but maybe she learned to compensate??

I wondered about some sort of engineering. She has only gone through Alg 2 in math though. Although she could likely go further.

Good point made about the money made in private music lessons.

    What is Packing Science?

I hadn't thought of audiologist or industrial audiologist. I am a speech pathologist. She isn't interested in what I do I don't think. So my brain didn't think of audiology.

She has thought of nurse anesthetist. Mostly because of the pay and demand and probably the challenge. For me I don't know if I would like working in an OR room without windows all day but maybe that isn't a big thing for her. Not sure how that career would be for a Mom.

Thanks everyone for the input so far!! You are the greatest! I will look back for other ideas!! Can't wait to be able to look through all the links!

    Thanks!

  10. Opps didnt see these replies.

Deer forest-information and UI architect. I don't know what these are but will look into them. Thank you

Matrips-No, she doesn't like to write. Just read. Although she loves to fill in forms.

Winter mom-Civil Servant. Maybe. I asked her if she likes meetings. She isn't sure.

    Thanks everyone.

Let me know of any other ideas! I feel like there are so many jobs we don't even know about.

  11. Thank you!! She will enjoy reading these replies.

Dereksurfs-Music/teacher She has said no to these. I think because of possible low pay. She struggles with sight reading and plays mostly by ear but plays advance pieces. She learns them quickly. I wonder if she suppresses an interest here because it doesn't seem as practical to her.

Fourisenough- pharmacist. I have suggested this and she doesn't think it sounds appealing but maybe she doesn't know all the details other than filling prescriptions.

Cosmos-events planning. Hmm... Is the name of a college degree or is there another name?

Amy58103- computer science. I love how you explained this is following directions. She has not really had much experience with computers other than surfing the Internet, using Microsoft word. I wonder if she would like something like this if she was exposed to it. She hasn't expressed an interest in making a computer program. My little guy he is all about computer programming and saught it out himself. So does this mean she isn't inclined to this field if she hasn't shown a desire here? Medical Technologist was something I thought of too! It has the rubber gloves!! (She is a goof! Haha) when I mentioned it to her she said she wouldn't want to be looking into a microscope all day. I was surprised because I thought she liked that.

Vidal Winter-teacher. I think she would be good at this but I think she has said no to this idea due to low pay. Maybe she wants to homeschool her own children and thinks teaching, at least kids, would seem counterintuitive.

Junie-nurse/pharmacist. I am glad you think nursing would fit her interests and skills.

LoriD- thank you so much for your links. This is something she will enjoy doing and that we were wanting to find.

    Thank you!!

  12. Thanks, this is fun seeing your suggestions. Helpful, too.

Blessedwith1-No to surgeon but maybe some other form of medicine and she said maybe to architect and interior designer.

Sherri in MI- She might like those office careers.

Crimson Wife- thank you for the link! It is very interesting and shows a wide variety of work in the field of chemistry. She did like her chemistry class but chemistry was not her favorite science. I am going to have her look through the link. Any other similar links?

Biology and Anatomy/Physiology are her favorite sciences but she isn't sure that she would be interested in physical therapy.

The ACT questionnaire showed she would like working with things and ideas vs people, but her current interest is nursing. I don't feel certain that is her calling though. Maybe an advanced nursing or administrative position?

She is looking for a career that would be in demand, pays well and lend itself to maybe part time work/be good for a woman who is a mother.

She loves football and college basketball but a career in that area likely would not be a good fit for a mother.

Thank you for the suggestions so far.

    What else should she consider?

  13. Paperwork, sticky notes, rubber gloves, and building things from instructions and on her own. She likes instructions. Even when she has a new shampoo she likes to read the instructions. When she makes Mac and cheese she reads the same instructions and measures things precisely even though she knows, it because she enjoys it. She likes schedules and she is very anal about staying on schedule. She loves lesson plans. She is an advanced piano student and loves to sing sacred music.

Do these characteristics make you think she should consider a certain career choice?

    Thanks!

P.S. I read this to her and she said she sounds like a nut! :)

  14. Hello. I am wondering about pursuing an extra year of high school for my DD so that she could DE at our local, high-acceptance state school and then be more ready to consider going away and accessing freshmen scholarships. She is 18 and has a July birthday. It would give her a chance to get a higher score on the ACT and possibly get full tuition all while she could be earning college credits via DE. She is interested in nursing but really isn't certain that is for her. If you know me from the past you may remember that she had at one point gone to the local high school after I had gone through cancer. She had all A's. We then considered that her 8th grade. So in a sense she has already done 5 years high school. She has been accepted to Carthage College, Oakland University, Marquette University, Northern Michigan University, and a few other small Catholic schools (one that gave her near full tuition already but she isn't sure she wants to go there at least not now). She applied to University of Wisconsin, which is her dream school because she is a Badger fan but we made a mistake and her transcript was sent in on the last possible day. She ended up being wait listed. We can't afford the OOS tuition anyway but I read with interest an article that maybe they will offer more merit aid especially to OOS. So maybe we should accept the waitlist and see what happens with whether she was selected and the financial piece they offer.

So, in my mind doing another year could allow her to mature and let her DE so that she can see if she wants to attend our local school. She could maybe make herself more stronger of a candidate by taking some SAT 2 subtexts which she hasn't yet.she is taking one AP class right now. The other thought was maybe to send her to madison area technical college and then have her transfer into UW Madison. She could live with a Grandma but may e that would be isolating and not very exciting although maybe comforting. another idea was to have her go to our local school and then let her take a summer class at Madison so that she feels she gets her Badger experience. So, I know my thoughts and ideas are all over the place here. I just want to figure out what is the best for her. I feel like there are so many great colleges out there that arent even on our radar. another year would give more time to find them. Any thoughts about any or all of my ideas? Thank you for reading.
