  1. Looking for feedback on favorite Geometry course for nonmathy kids?  Need an incremental, step by step Geometry course that is visual and uses mastery.  If it is  video based or live, need a presenter that speaks slowly and clearly.  Mr. D Math and Unlock Math speakers speak too fast for my kiddos.    Both have some auditory processing issues, so the more visual the better.  Thank you much!

  2. Looking for feedback on the American History book "America:  The Last Best Hope" by Bill Bennett.  Has anyone used this?  What did you think?

It looks like Homeschool Connections will be offering a full year American History via a live online class using Volumes I and II of this book in 2018-2019.

    Thanks!

  3. Thank you everyone.  I appreciate the suggestions.  RootAnn, I agree that Homeschool Connections is probably going to be my best bet, especially if it is a live class.  My son benefits from interaction.  Rosika, I did check out the Rolling Acres Tradito Nosta program but it states it is a Literature/Socratic discussion class, not a history class.   It looks like they do give the students access to an optional independent study course on ancient history, but that would be more credits/coursework than I am looking for at this point. I just need 1 history credit that is not too classical or super rigorous, but with a Catholic worldview.

  4. Sorry for the delay in responding. Just getting back to normal after the Christmas break.

I'm so grateful for all the wonderful responses. Thank you all! Youve given me so many good leads to investigate with my son.

  5. St. Mary's University in San Antonio does have some significant financial aid for strong students who want to major in business. The student body is predominantly Catholic at the undergraduate level and fairly conservative; the faculty and over-arching school atmosphere is not overtly Catholic

University of Dallas is enthusiastically Catholic. It has a strong core curriculum with a liberal arts focus. The theater department is strong; there are also a number of students who participate in the theater productions but who do not major in theater. I don't think they have architecture or graphic design; I do not know of a separate film major, but there are a number of film courses taught through the language and English departments. They are homeschool friendly.

Thank you ....shall look into both

  6. I work in college admissions. I think as long as they can identify from the transcript that he completed one full credit of each, there shouldn't be a problem.

    Milknhoney,

Thank you; that is what I needed to know, and I am glad to hear that.  I really like this history instructor, and this is just the way he has the courses set up for next year.

I have another question if you don't mind:

Do colleges want to see the specific course name or the general name of the course on the transcript?

For example the world history course that is 1 semester and .5 credit is called "Inventions that Revolutionized the World".  Should I call it that on the transcript or just call it "World History"?

The American history course that is 1 semester and .5 credit is called "Early American History 1492-1763".  Should the transcript have that specific name, or just "American History"?

    Thanks a bunch!

  7. Next year for 10th grade I was planning on having my son take a half year (.5 credit) of World History in the fall, followed by half year (.5 credit) of American History in the spring.  This is the way the online history instructor will be offering it next year.  Is this generally acceptable to colleges?

This year, in 9th grade, he is taking a full year of World Geography.

I have not planned out 11th and 12th yet.

    Thank you for your insights.

  8. Thank you all for your feedback.  I will definitely check out that book.  I do realize that plans can change.  We are of course working on saving money and building a solid academic foundation.  Regarding a large  public school - I don't think that is going to be a good fit now or ever, just knowing my son.

I think  the location is the most negotiable of everything on my list.

What about Grand Canyon University?  It has all the majors I listed except architecture (that would be a bit of a stretch for my son - he is very arty/social/creative and less mathy), is a private Christian school, and seems on the more affordable side.  It is in AZ, but again location is the most negotiable factor.

The majors at Grand Canyon University that might be of interest to my son are:

BA in Advertising and Graphic Design

    BA in Communications

    BA in Digital Film:  Production

    BA in Theater and Drama

    BA in Business

    BA in Marketing
