  1. So my dd is going to have her 8th birthday party in two months. She doesn't need anything and we are trying to live more simply. Instead of presents we would like people to bring hats or gloves to donate to kids who need them. How would you word this in a polite way?

  2. Aimee, I am so sorry that you are going through this. We had to make the heartbreaking choice to euthanize our beloved family dog 2 years ago. He had gone blind in one eye and even though he loved my kids like crazy, my toddler suprised him twice on his blind side and he bite her both times in a panic. Because there was no way fix his eyesight there was nothing we could do to prevent him from biting again. We told our kids that he was very sick and that he was going to die. We loved him up and took pictures and then I took him to the vet. I stayed with him the whole time, petting him and telling how much we loved him. It was very fast and peaceful.  It was ( and still is) devastating, but I feel we did the best we could in the situation. Since he was a biting risk, he wouldn't have found another home and this way he went peacefully with love.

  3. Hello!

My dd is 7 and finishing 1st grade. I planned on using the CAT test with her to submit to the state of Virginia. When I when to order it this afternoon I found out it has been discontinued and replaced with the Terranova CAT 6 which is a more extensive test. Instead of just math, language arts, and reading like the old CAT it also includes history, social studies, and science. I am freaking out because for history and science I have not paid any attention to what kids are learning in public schools. We have been doing SOTW 1, reading the American Girl books, and checking out science books from the library about space, evolution, rainforests, and microscopic life.

Has anyone used the Terranova CAT 6 and know if they are testing knowledge on specific topics? If we have any big holes (according to the public school system) I only have 3 weeks to remedy them!

    Ahh!!! Panic!!!

And as a rant, it is super duper frustrating that I now feel the pressure to conform even more the public school standards when I know that in reality I am covering more interesting topics in more depth.

  4. Hello! My dd7 is almost done with MM 1 and I picked up Miquon sight unseen to do before jumping into MM 2. After looking at Miquon I am concerned that it might be too confusing for her since she has never used c-rods before. Any opinions will be appreciated! Thanks

  5. I asked my parents for a purity ring when I was 15. I had read I Kissed Dating Goodbye and been to lots of abstinence events. Now looking back on the experience I see how incredibly negatively it affected me. It didn't stop me from having sex before marriage but added heaps and heaps of guilt. I think in someways it actually drove me to more sexual behavior as a teen/young adult because it felt like an all or nothing proposition. Either I was pure and good and only held hands or I was "broken" and dirty. With that kind of dichotomy even making out carried with it the weight of sin and a belief that I had tarnished my sexuality for my future spouse. If you are already ruined why hold back then?

I can't tell you how many times I saw the demonstration where they would crumple up or tear a paper heart to show how your heart is permanently damaged by intimacy before marriage. I have been married now for years and my dh and I have a very intimate relationship. I don't have less to give him because I wasn't a virgin before we were married.

I carry much more emotional baggage from the Purity movement than I do from premarital sex.
