  1. I'm just curious to know if anyone who has applied to Penn State has heard back.

DS applied and had his app packet complete by the 1st week in September; however, he hasn't heard back. There are lots of students who have their acceptances; some who have even applied after DS (and PS supposedly has rolling admissions). This isn't his top choice school, and DS doesn't seem to be bothered by not hearing, but I'm feeling a little snubbed. I think DS  has good stats (great, compared to some accepted students' stats seen on another board).

I'm wondering if it could be a homeschooling thing because when I look on the 2016 College Acceptances post on this forum, I don't see Penn State listed. Have any of your students applied to Penn State? If so, have you heard anything back?

My DS received his acceptance notice today.

  3. Just move forward. Get a new curriculum, start from the beginning, and work through the summer.

My 9th grade DD is only on week 6 of her biology curriculum because we changed curric in the first semester and then we had a family emergency that consumed 4 weeks of our school year with out-of-town travel. I explained to DD that we would have to work through the first week of August to finish the curriculum. She understood.

  4. I have personal and much experience with both instructors.

DS1 (now in his 3rd year of college) took Jann for algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2. In algebra 1, ds was Jann's only student so the instruction was one-on-one. DS1 (a music major) had a neutral attitude regarding math...he could live with or without it. However, he loved Jann as a teacher and recommended her to DS2. DS1 did dual enrollment after all of Jann's courses and tested into calculus at the community college, but could not take calculus there because he had not taken any trigonometry in high school. He also scored above average on the math section on the ACT & SAT.

DS2 took algebra 1 and algebra 2 with Jann. He also enjoyed being in Jann’s classes, and Jann spent MANY tutoring sessions helping him “get itâ€. The workload was overwhelming for him, but he has LDs which affect the speed at which he works. DS2 was well-prepared for precalculus, which he took at WHA with Anne Stublen. DS2 is currently in Anne’s AP Calculus AB course. DS2 loves Mrs. Stublen and has recommended her to DD. Mrs. Stublen is very encouraging, supportive, and the students feel like she’s in their corner. Her teaching style and support has boosted DS2’s academic confidence. The courses have been rigorous but manageable. DD scored very well on math portion of ACT.

DD took pre-algebra and algebra 1 with Jann. DD does not like math but performs well. DD loved Mrs. Jann; however, each class session moved too slowly for her. Because of a scheduling conflict, this year we had to choose WHA (Leslie Smith) for geometry. My daughter likes the course and Mrs. Smith. DD has told me that Mrs. Smith is very encouraging and nice. The workload is manageable and Jurgensen does not seem to be too difficult for my math-loathing DD. We had planned to go back to Jann for algebra 2, but because Mrs. Stublen teaches pre-calc and calc and my daughter is a STEM kid and will need the higher maths, we may stay at WHA (and with Mrs. Stublen specifically). I considered having DD do math at the community college after algebra 2 (because cc costs half as much). But Mrs. Stublen is such a wonderful teacher that I’m willing to pay more for DD to be under her tutelage.

Jann genuinely cares about the success of her students. She gives free tutoring sessions to students who are having problems. I believe Jann is best for students who need a slower pace. Jann DEFINITELY has clear explanations. I sat in class with my daughter for a semester and I’ve listened to many recorded lessons. Jann responds to emails quickly. If either DS or DD ever had a question, they would scan their homework and email Jann. They’d get an answer the same day. Jann's courses end at algebra 2.

Anne Stublen genuinely cares about her students and the success of her students. She has called me on numerous occasions to discuss DS2’s progress and just to give me general encouragement. I recently had a family emergency and Anne and Mrs. Smith were more than accommodating (one allowing DD to take the midterm early and one allowing DS2 to have an extension on his midterm). I believe the explanations are clear, but I’ve never listened in on a class. I have watched a class recording but it was pre-calculus and calculus….and that was like listening to a foreign language. Anne also posts links to videos (YouTube, Khan Academy, etc.) that cover the same concepts she covered in class. For 2015-2016, WHA courses were $600, AP courses were $700.

They are both excellent teachers. You have to choose based on what your student needs and what your finances dictate.

    HTH,

    Val

  6. thank you so much for those who have responded....I would be interested to know for those who said they didn't like it as to WHY you didn't like it.  Was it because it was too hard...or just wasn't the style of teaching that your child liked or what?  Likewise for those who really liked it...

I have 3 kids...only one ( my youngest) is interested in science things....my other two have other tendencies.

My DD did not like having to read everything online. She prefers an actual text. She also did not like the order in which the assignments were supposed to be completed.

  7. Val, hold on. Normally we would not have known that early. It just happened that dd, an alum, was talking with another alum - a friend of hers - who has connections and someone took a peak at her brother's file before letters went out. Even my parents do not know. It has only been mentioned here because of the relative anonymity. I was so excited, I didn't think about the fact that posting early might cause other parents to have some anxiety while waiting. I am very sorry about that.

It is a great school. I really hope your ds gets good news.

Faithmanor, I understand how the stars aligned for you and ds to find out early. No anxiety here (I'm not sure I want my skinny, zero percent body fat, little ds in such a cold state). I was just commenting on your blessing. I promise; your secret is safe with me.

  8. It was a fluke that we found out so early. DD, an alumni, was mentioning to a friend from college who works at U of MI that her brother had applied there. The friend went and sneaked a peak at his file and found he was accepted. The letter is not in hand. We expect it to go out when the others do around the first of December.

No one else around here knows. I posted due to the relative anonymity here, but don't want to say anything locally and end up with friend in trouble. It was nice to know though!

Oh my gosh! How lucky you are to know already. Congratulations to you both.

DS applied to U of MI and is anxiously awaiting a decision. It's his first choice school (but may not be possible due to out of state tuition). He spent two weeks this summer in their SCEEP (engineering) program and was sold.

  9. Certain dorms/apartments on campus stayed open during Thanksgiving; however, the remainder of the campus (including the dining halls) was closed.

When DS left for college 2 and a half years ago, I instructed him to invite home for Thanksgiving as many friends as he desired because if the situation were reversed, I would want a friend to invite my son to his/her home for Thanksgiving. My DS came home for Thanksgiving and brought 3 friends with him. We live about 1.5 hours from campus.

  11. We chose DIVE biology for my 9th grade DD this year. DD absolutely hated it, and she loves science (especially biology). DD did not like the online text. We tried DIVE using the book Exploring Life...(Campbell), but the syllabus that was sent did not line up well at all. We then switched to another book that for which he had a syllabus published; it did not line up well with the lectures either. (We already had these books on our shelves.) We ended up ditching DIVE after 8 weeks and going with Science Shepherd biology. DD likes it much better.

  12. AppleGreen, I know exactly how you are feeling.

I have HS 3. My eldest is in his 3rd year of college. He took forever to complete his work, is probably ADD, but was never tested/diagnosed. In high school he worked all day and sometimes up until 1 a.m. to complete his assignments. DS also spent a lot of time in the car because he was very involved in music (trumpet, piano, and composition) and had lessons all over the DC/MD/VA area. He did work in the car, but mostly slept during long rides to lessons or rehearsals) He never complained or seemed overwhelmed; he just did it…most times independently. He’s done reasonably well in college (has made the Dean’s or President’s list every semester); however, he still struggles with taking a long time to complete assignments.

DD 14 (9th grade and dual enrolled) also takes a long time to complete her work. She’s very bright…a slightly lazy high achiever (if there is such a thing). She works slowly, but she’s also very involved in music (as a hobby more than a future career) and spends a lot of time away from home at lessons & rehearsals. She gets motion sickness in the car, so she cannot do anything that requires reading or writing in the car. We do, however, use that time to listen to TC lectures, audio books, or even watch educational DVDS (if she doesn’t get motion sickness watching). She works all day and on the weekends…just does it, mostly independently but occasionally asks for help…usually doesn’t complain…and is asking to add even more to her plate for next semester.

DS 17 (senior this year) is a different story. He sounds very much like your DC. He struggled tremendously in 9th grade. His academic confidence went down and his frustration soared. That’s when we had a psychoeducational/neurropsych eval. He was diagnosed with ADHD-inattentive, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, low processing, and poor working memory (gifted IQ). Like your DC, he worked very slowly: from 8am until bed time, several hours on both Saturday and Sunday, and over the summer. Depending on the courses, he could only take 3 to 5 courses at a time. So he worked year-round to be able to have a competitive transcript (he’s a STEM kid). Getting this kid through each day was (and still is) like pushing a large boulder uphill. Things have gotten better since 9th grade. He works a little faster, but still takes forever to finish his work. His focus is horrible, and finds it very difficult to stay on task. I find myself having to tell him, “OK. I’m setting a timer for 1 hour, and I want you to work diligently and not get up until the timer goes off. Then you may have a 15 minute break.†It works sometimes and doesn’t work other times. He has other academic issues also that we are trying to work on. He’s taking two dual enrollment courses this semester and doing extremely well in one (non STEM) and barely holding on to a B in the other (chemistry). With chemistry, it has been a struggle. I spend so much time helping him study that I feel like I’m teaching the course. Reluctantly, we’ve had him try meds. They work for a certain amount of time. They make him feel horrible because he loses his appetite and has no energy from not eating. We only had him take them on school days because he wasn’t eating enough when he’d take the meds. This year, he has decided that he does not want to take meds. Consequently, his focus is horrible and my stress level is through the roof. Although he’s applied to colleges, we are considering a gap year for him.

I said all of this to say that I understand your feelings. I feel like giving up EVERY SINGLE DAY. There are nights when I hide in my closet and cry. Hold on…keep pushing…it gets a bit easier….and then they graduate. J  The reality is that you have to meet your child at his/her academic capabilities. College is not for everyone. Going to college directly out of high school may not be an option.  Attending a college that has comprehensive services for students with disabilities may be the right road for some. You just sort of figure it out along the rough and bumpy and sad and frustrating and exhausting road. (((Hugs)))

It would be nice if we could have HS students with LDs who have gone on to college and been successful (or not) mentor/advise our HS DC with LDs who are trying to make it through the trenches. Is there a support group for students with LDs?

  14. DIVE lectures are dull in my opinion. I always encourage people to watch the samples. They are representative. I also like to add to every DIVE thread, never, never use the "internet in place of a textbook" option. Always pair DIVE with a textbook the student likes. What I've looked at of his internet links are terrible! Pairing with BJU is always easiest. I won't use BJU for Biology, although we did use it for Chemistry where evolution isn't an issue. It pairs really, really well. But I used PH for Physical and M/L for Biology and for my kiddo that likes DIVE, I paired them both with DIVE. For the DIVE hater, I dropped it after the first semester of ICP and never went back.

Momto2Ns - I wish I had seen one of your messages before I ordered DIVE. I watched the samples and allowed DD to do the same. I agree that the internet links are terrible, so we have a Biology Exploring Life (Campbell) that we are trying to use but the syllabus DIVE sent for Campbell to line up with the lessons is off (or not helpful - 4 complete chapters listed for week 6).

Thinking about following your lead....dropping it and never looking back.
