  1. I've been generating side hustle ideas for a few months, and am on the verge of acting on one or two in the next week.

I'm wondering if anyone here has a solid side hustle, and, if so, how has it been for you? Curious about time, setbacks, familial support, your ability to balance working with school responsibilities, and all the other types of questions that come in with starting your own business.

FWIW, my "hustle" ideas all fall in the field of formulating digital products for sale (templates and the like).

  2. Are you coming soon? The SLO library is closed for renovations. Depending on ages of children, Kennedy probably is a better bet, although it would be more fun to be in downtown SLO if popping out for coffee or a treat is in your plans.

Cal Poly has a fun periodic table display that is not to be missed.

    Other fun downtown SLO ideas:

    Wandering around the mission

    Bubblegum alley

    Scout coffee

    Dessert at the Madonna Inn

SLO Donut Company (SloDoCo) is another fun stop

  3. Right?

I could understand if my FIL was upset that we broke with the norm on naming our kids but the people most bothered aren't family and don't share the name we opted to not use. What the heck?

For clarity I will say that my husband and I both added each other's name when we got married. So say I was Lucy Stone like my avatar and I married Henry Blackwell. I became Lucy Stone Blackwell and he became Henry Stone Blackwell. When our son arrived we decided to name him John Stone rather than either Blackwell or Stone Blackwell. And in practice we both use Stone more often than Stone Blackwell.

We did the same! confuses the heck out of my poor gram...

  4. There are some categories of problems which really lend themselves to a bar model. They provide a framework for the student to logic through a problem. We have had a few problems in which my son (who is fluent with variables and basic algebra) was able to "see" a solution using the bar model. These tend to be comparison problems or ones dealing with fractions.

I wouldn't set them up in opposition. They feel like valid and useful additions to any problem solving toolbox.

  5. I was overdue for new pants (having lived in elastic-waisted pants for two years due to pregnancy/total lack of time to try on new pants). Friends had given me a gift card to Old Navy, and on a whim I stopped in. I typically get jeans at the thrift store, as paying $30 for a **cheap** pair of jeans really does me in.

On this day, I found a rounder several super clearanced jeans. We are talking $0.44 jeans! Way cheaper than thrift store prices, unless it's by-the-pound or a bag day.

  6. Here are some additional schools that are small and have ChmE.  I don't know if their campuses are conservative or not.

    Rose-Hulman in Indiana

    Trine University in Indiana

    Case Western in Cleveland

Have you considered looking at some State schools with engineering, but attending at a regional campus to get the class size you want?

I came to recommend Rose-Hulman, which should meet all of your criteria.

  7. Arcadia, thank you so much for linking that thread! Eclecticmum's post may be one of the most important things I've ever read on these forums (which is saying a lot; I've been around a long time).

I fell down a rabbit hole of research this afternoon, beginning to learn as much as I can about Froebel's work, and how to use the Gifts. This is going to be very significant for my youngest child, who is an artist who learns best with his hands. The Frank Lloyd Wright connection is amazing and instructive...I'll stop talking now...

thanks again for the link. A boy's life will be changed for the better with these tools and philosophies.

I keep waiting for Froebel to become popular. His work is SO fascinating and has been useful for my ASD kiddo. (The rest love it too; he just gets into it in an almost religious way.)

  8. I looked through the archives and didn't see any good hits for this topic.

I'm looking for Valentine's Day books for older elementary-aged children. Picture books are perfect. I'm looking to avoid product tie-ins, series books (Fancy Nancy, etc), or easy-reader chapter books. Those are easy to find!

The kids currently LOVE "Somebody Loves you, Mr Hatch." If there are suggestions in that vein, I'm all ears.

    Thanks in advance!

  9. Last time I flew with a little bitty, the flight attendant told me baby could NOT be in carrier during take-off and landing. I had to be holding baby in arms. Otherwise, easy peasy. Bring extra clothes for everyone and some ziplock bags in case you need stink containment.

This is worth noting. Our worst baby flying experience was taking sleeping babe OUT of the Ergo for takeoff. Plan ahead :)
