  1. Thanks everyone. Between Keystone and American School, which do you think is a better college-prep education. Either one of them particularly good at teaching high school writing, particularly a research paper?
  2. Hello All, I'm looking into high school options for my daughter, who will start 10th grade in the fall. I want a rigorous program that is also self-paced, since she doesn't do well with strict deadlines and a heavy workload. I know that seems like an oxymoron, but we have sort of a hectic schedule so while she wants a solid education and a diploma/transcript from an accredited school, we aren't into the online public schools here in MA with their excessive number of daily assignments and "overdue lessons" lists. I also do NOT want the whole program online. Real textbooks are a MUST. oh, and not too pricey. Too much to ask? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
  3. Hi Everyone, I'm looking for any recommendations for a math word problem or worksheet generator website that can do high school math problems. It can be a paid subscription or free. Thanks!
  4. Hello everyone, I once saw a thread with an exhaustive list of online classes that someone put together with people adding more resources in the replies. Cant find it anywhere. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Any help is greatly appreciated! Aminah
  5. Hi everyone, I'm looking for a fun interactive/DVD/Audio something or other for my 5 and 7 yr olds to practice their spanish. My husband and his mom (who lives with us) speak spanish to each other and to the kids sometimes, but these two kids really have not picked much up. Any ideas? I don't want anything that will take much (or any) time for me to prepare or present. Just something that will be self-directed interesting enough for them to do on their own. I guess I could combine it with spanish storybooks and picture dictionaries since I completely have fallen out of the habit of talking to them in spanish and so has dh. Thanks!
  6. I agree that British culture doesn't have the same hang ups about alcohol as we do. Another thought is that alcohol and drunkedness has not always been a taboo topic for children in the states either. Lots of old cartoons like Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry and the like had scenes with characters getting drunk and hiccuping/falling all over the place. My dad, who is a very silly and animated person, on occasion makes jokes and acts like a "drunk" cartoon character around my kids (who don't all get it) even though I frown upon it. Anyway, I wouldn't choose this for my family, especially my small kids, since we are a conservative religious family although they are aware of what alcohol is and what it can do to you. But I can see it being used by older kids and parents not being offended by it, just considering it silly nonsense.
  7. Hello Everyone, Recently I came across a US history read aloud curriculum that was supposed to be kinda CM style but I can't for the life of me remember where i saw it or what its called. All I remember was that there were several levels based on different time periods of US history and each book had pictures of a few kids on the cover. Sound familiar to anyone? Thanks, Aminah
  8. Hello, I'm relatively new here, only posted a couple of times. Looking through the threads, I see people use acronyms for most of the curriculums, but of course I'm lost! Is there a post anywhere with a list of them defined? In the meantime, what is TOM? Thanks!
  9. I remember looking at this a month or so ago and was kind of intrigued because it seems to teach math so differently than other curriculum I have seen. Do you guys print out the pages or work from the computer? I have only really looked at the reception level. I decided not to use it because my 6yr old was using singapore grade 1 and loving it, as well as classroom textbook i randomly found at my moms house (shes a former teacher and often has boxes of school supplies:) Anywho, how do you guys implement MEP?
  10. thanks! that makes sense. I may also try alternating the two. Sorry, one last question. What is GWG? I'm new here and not up on the lingo lol!
  11. so what are the main differences between the two?
  12. Has anyone used Easy Grammar/Daily Grams? I'm thinking of useing it for my 3rd grade boy who I dont think will like the scripted nature of FLL3. So anyone try this? Like? Dislike? Thanks
  13. Hello, About a month and a half ago I saw a post that discussed in detail the benefits of several different writing curriculums including WWE and WWS. Sadly, I can't remember the names of the other curriculums and I can't find the thread. So if anyone remembers this thread, please post a link. Otherwise, I'd like suggestions for DD11 and DS9. They both need work; their writing is not really on level in my opinion. My goal is to get them past the basic 5 paragraph essay format that is so often the end point for high schools in my area. You don't really see proficiency in expository writing, persuasive essays, forming a thesis and rhetoric. Any suggestions for a curriculum/learning path for my kiddos? Thanks!
