  1. Hi hi!

Work has been busy. I'm technically only contracted for 15-20 hours a week. It's only Wednesday and I'm already over my hours. 🤪
I'm thinking of scrapping any lesson plans and using documentaries as my babysitter for the next two weeks.

(It's our busiest time since parents are doing last minute curriculum purchases.)

I can't really contribute to this as my child is younger, but why do people assign a specific duration of reading? Why not 3 chapters or X% of a book? It may be that you reach a natural break in the book before or after the 30 min.

Why not setting the expectation to finish 1 or 3 books per week? Or one book that you select and two more of her choice. Maybe she will finish one during a very long setting and then skip reading the next day.

Setting it as "X min + Y min/day" makes it sound like a chore to me. An invitation to keep checking the clock until you can run away.

For me, I set a time limit because otherwise mine would never choose to read. She struggled greatly early on and has determined that she "hates reading," so we're slowly working through that mentality. She currently is still overwhelmed by chapters, so rarely does she read a chapter book. She'll read longer graphic novels on her own, but those don't always have those natural breaks. Thus, our time limit, otherwise I definitely agree that natural breaks are the way to go.

There are days her assigned time is like you said "checking the clock until you can run away." But, there are other days when she actually gets engrossed and doesn't track the time. Those are the times I'm working towards, when reading is actually pleasurable.

    Ivy!!  How are you?!  ❤️❤️

How is the little 'un?  Not so little any more? 😊

Not little at all. That little rat had the nerve to grow up!
    She's 10 now. 😭

We're really good. I'm working part-time as a virtual assistant for a science curriculum (Journey Homeschool Academy) and just doing the homeschool thing. We're starting at a new co-op in September and I'll be teaching 5th grade science, so that'll be a new adventure.

    But, all good!

How about everyone else? How are you?

Just a review idea — we made big flashcards with the practice words and letters, with the dots underneath and the arrow.

It is easier than flipping through the book.

In general with review when kids aren’t remembering — start with a small number and work on those, and then do another small number, while occasionally reviewing earlier things.  If a lot of things start being forgotten, slow down and review more.

That is not always the way to go, but it can be good.

That's a fabulous idea! Thank you!

Is that Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons? It looks like it to me, but I could be wrong, as it's been many years since I used it.

I used that with all of my children, and it worked for three, but not my daughter with dyslexia. She could do each lesson on it's own, but she did not retain, so the later lessons became frustrating. It was not multisensory enough.

I hope it keeps working for her!! But just keep a watch out for a plateau. And you could add multisensory practice in.

It's so exciting to see progress happening!! Hooray!!

    Yes it is.
I wasn't totally sold on it, but a ton of moms in my FB group for homeschooling w/auditory processing disorder recommended it. However, it does seem to be one of those where it either works great or it doesn't work at all.

    And thanks!

My younger son did Reading Mastery for a while (about a year) and it is kind-of the same program.  But there are a lot of options for either repeating lessons, adding in optional lessons, or skipping lessons in Reading Mastery.  In 100 EZ  Lessons it is kind-of a faster version because it doesn’t have a lot of extra optional lessons.

Anyway — I think it is great, so glad your daughter is doing well with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks! I'll look at that. We do go back and review the sounds sometimes, like the other day when she couldn't remember anything, but having optional lessons and stuff would be great.

I will just say my experience..... this is great, great, great for blending, but it starts to move way too fast at a certain point.  But she can take her blending skill into another program if it does get too fast.

Just to say, if that happens, it’s okay, she will still have gotten so much out of it 🙂

    That's good to know.
I do have the 1st Explode the Code, so when it starts to get too fast for her, we'll take a break and go back to review. Today was a great day. Two days ago, she couldn't remember half the sounds. lol (Seems to be typical from what I'm reading, so we just keep pushing on.)

  8. Ok, so I had to load to Youtube because my file was massive on here.

Anyway, in a homeschooling group for auditory pricessing disorder, people suggested we try 100 EZ lessons for Riv. Y'all!! I had my doubts, but this is the first curriculum in 2 years that has made it so she can read!! The pre-Explode the Code books were great, but she is comprehending and enjoying it so much. She's just finally excited that she can read! (I mean, she still no letter name retention, but as long as we have the sounds, we're making progress.)

I cannot like this. I love cauliflower, but who puts cauliflower in oatmeal?

I think cauliflower tastes like toots smell. 🤣 I still don't know what possessed me to think I wouldn't taste it in this.

Also, low carb/keto people put it in "NOatmeal" so they can pretend they're happily eating real oatmeal. lol

I make a low-carb hot cereal with flax, hemp seeds, and chia (with lots of variations). Unsweetened non-dairy milk of choice. Let me know if you want details. 🙂

I need a good recipe. I found a recipe online for a "Keto oatmeal" and it had cauliflower in it. I gagged through 2 bites and tossed it. 🤢

    I feel spoiled.

Dh went grocery shopping to get ingredients for him to make dinner tonight.

And while he was there he bought me sushi.

    And chocolate.

    🙂

Geez. Mine just goes fishing. 😕 lol

I really want some sushi now!

(I'm going to whip up some red curry chicken as soon as the meat thaws.)
