Hi, can a student who would like to go to a good college have to take AP classes or is it not necessary?

I live in a state where you have to take tests, and I was wondering how it works. Does it work with age or by grade? Because my daughter is currently a year behind and will this effect testing? She isn't ready yet to take the seventh grade test because she is now in sixth grade, but she is at the age of seventh grade.

So, I decided to step away from traditional, dull saxon and move over to teaching textbooks. Now my question is, I see that they use a computer based program but how does it work? Do the children have a piece of paper with them to come out with the solution, or do you do it all mental? And can you use the workbook with the cds? Sorry if my question is a little confusing!

My fifth grader for ... has been using:

 

History/Reading/Bible: Sonlight core D

Math: Saxon 6/5

Language arts: BJU writing and grammar 5

Science: both sonlight core f and apologia astronomy/human body

Art: Art lab for kids

 

And just a bunch of other books :laugh:

I am quite a newbie when it comes to homeschooling and I decided to buy Bob Jones writing and grammar for language arts, but is this enough for language arts? And if you use or have used bju how do you feel about it? Thanks a lot Nathalie
