I agree with 2 others that posted here. :) I am sure the other recommendations are great too. :)
I was going to suggest State History from a Christian Perspective. I used the WA state history one and it was WONDERFUL! It is filled with different types of schedules so you can use it as much or as little as you like.
The other one is Jennifer Stewards California Unit Study. I haven't used it, but I have used some of her other studies and her stuff is GREAT! She has lots of recommended books to go with it as well.
If you are into lapbooking, HOAC has a few on California. They come with a research guide, so you don't have to do any extra research. Here is a link to a free state lapbook, but you have to do the research.

Here is something that interests me:
I saw them at our State Convention. I wanted to purchase everything!
Search around the site. There is lots of neat things there.
Something else I am considering: Media Angels Creation Geology. There is a activity Pack, and a coloring book to go along with it.
And of course "I" just had to get a lapbook on Geology, though it is still in my "to do" pile. :)

There are lots of hands on activities in this book. But like Cynthia said, it is geography related. :)
BTW, We (dd7th and I) love this book here! :)

When we did a edible map of WA state, we used brownies. YUM! I just outlined the shape of WA on the brownie and let the kids do the rest with different colored icing tubes, hershey kisses for mountains, etc. It was GREAT!

Didn't even make it through year 2 unit 1 (had 1 in 7th and 4 1st grade and younger). Moved on to unit studies, MOH, and co-op classes.

Another one I like, but haven't done a membership for yet is: abc teach. They do let you access some of their stuff w/o being a member, but there is a world of "stuff" available to you once you join.

All the advice you have recieved is wonderful. You can definately do it all on your own w/o having to purchase anything. You don't have to lapbook w/ a unit study. Some lapbooks out there (free and ones you purchse, do have research guides with them and are like a mini unit study all on their own)
With unit studies, I think of notebooking (though I do had a touch of lapbooking to it, just because I love lapbooks). Here is a great site to help explain notebooking vs. lapbooking.
Homeschoolshare (someone mentioned above), will have a unit study and lapbook on butterflies. I just saw a unit study study on The Very Hungry Caterpillar. :) What fun!

I totally agree, I couldn't imagine doing all of TT along with another full curriculum. It would kill me! LOL :) For me, it would have to be one or the other, or a full history curr. and bits and pieces of TT to go with it. :)
We happened to use TT CL as a summer activity.

Homeschool in the Woods Colonial Study
I soooo agree with this one! We had so much fun doing it. I want to take the time do the others, but that time hasn't been made available yet. :)

I haven't done all 4, but would LOVE to do all 4. I don't think it would be over kill at all. My kids (and I) had so much fun with CL it was amazing! But I haven't done all four, so I may be incorrect in my opinion after all. :)
I have done colonial life and have new world explorers. I wish I could just take the time off of other things and do these. I think all 4 together would be a GREAT American history for 1 year, just take 2 months do do each one. Believe me, there is enough information, suggested resources, etc. to take 2 months on each one.
It is for boys and girls a like. :) Yes, I woud think he would enjoy it. :)

Thanks, Tracey. I think we will **fingers crossed**. I think it is well worth it full price, $20 a year, but getting it for $1.30 is a WAY better deal.

That is a GREAT idea. And we might do just that this year to catch him up to GWG 6. :)

Like Karen said, you could wait a while. :) Some people don't start a formal program until 5th grade or so. It will depend on what you want for you dc. :)
A nice gentle approach is First Language Lessons along with Explode the Code books.
My son is in first grade and we use a combo of FLL with GWG and ETC books. None of them take that long. He enjoys the workbook with GWG and I think it is a great way to reinforce what he is learning in FLL.

Have you looked at the samples?
My son will be in 6th grade next fall, but we are doing GWG 5. I spent a year trying to do DG 2/3 and EG 3 with him and it didn't not stick and was torture (for both of us)! So in 4th grade he did GWG 3, in 5th grade he did GWG 4, in 6th grade, we will be doing GWG 5. :) And I am ok with that. He is too.
I looked at GWG at out local convention and decided to just keep with the pace we are doing and not skip GWG5 and go into GWG6. I fear there may be something he'll miss. :)

There a lot of different crafts besides lapbooking. These study are loaded with crafts, recipes, and more. ~Tina

we did something like this with a yahoo group, but they (EL) wouldn't allow it the following year.

Why not lapbook it? There are lots of lapbooks out there relating to american history that comes with guides and extra suggestions/activities. Add in a few read alouds, and a craft here and there and ta-da, a wonderful history currriculum.
