I agree with the post above. It is better to teach the child to yell fire or to yell call 911 than to yell he's not my dad. I have a friend whose ds learned that in an abduction situation to yell he's not my dad at school. The next week after that school lesson when he didn't get his way in public he yelled "he's not my Dad" and that was a horrible no good very bad day.

Is there a US Galore Park?

For DS1 I would go with Saxon or Excel. For DS2 bump him up or go to Saxon?

We use math mammoth and Excel math. We like to start with miquon.

Grow a garden and freeze meals. Garage sales are cheaper than second hand stores but both are better than retail. We buy baby wascloths at garage sales (often new in the package) and use these for napkins. stop eating at fast food/restaurants. Do errands in a planned way to preserve gas.

Thank you. This is inspiring.

Yes, I'm pretty sure we fit the different family in the hs neighborhood category. Here's a short list.
Secular focus
Latino children
2 lesbian moms who both work full time
Both work at University
Both over 40
I was previously a public school teacher
4 children (larger family)

For traveling with kids, there are those travel bingo type games, small sets of animals or dinosaurs, puppets, wind up toys, magnadoodles, travel games, small plastic mazes with the little silver ball in them, riddle books, madlibs, state by state trivia books, rubiks cube, card games and of course hs work.
I used to go the dollar stores for fun things to do but have had better luck going to the dollar section of target and some craft stores.
We parcel out new items over time rather than allowing full access to the new stuff right up front to get greatest use of things.
We also allow each person to bring a small bag of items they choose themselves.
At rest stops we make everyone get out and we do some foot races or gymnastics competitions (most summersaults, longest handstand, etc.) to get them all moving.

New. Each year it is a bucket for the beach/sand box.

I don't have rv experience but do have other travel tips. We are a family of 6 and yes, almost all hotels make you get 2 rooms. For a place to stay when you get to the event, instead of a hotel try vrbo.com and rent a house. For us it has been great to rent a house! Then we have a nice full kitchen, room to spread out, laundry, it is cheaper or equal to a hotel. We often get a place with a pool too! There are many options available. No, I don't have any relationship to this site other than previous use. Fwiw.

I have a miele calisto. It cleans well and the bags don't let any dirt back into the air. The bags are overpriced but a fellow hive member told me about knock off bags on amazon. We buy those now and they work just as well. The only thing I don't like is that the compartment that holds the bags is SMALL. The bag only partially fills and I have to replace the bag all.the.time. Otherwise, it is a great vacuum.

I hated our Dyson. We have a miele and I like it except the bags are so small. For mid level I lie Hoover and Eureka. You also may be able to get a refurb miele.

Oh yes. I have more dusty curriculum sitting in storage than I care to think about....Shurley Grammar (hated it),wwe teachers edition when we already had wkbks so we don't use the tm, Singapore Math, MCP Plaid, and a million early readers that no one ever had interest in....ugh. I bought a bunch of old Cuisinaire math books off ebay because we loved Miquon...overkill! We just keep moving on.

Great! A wonderfully insightful blog post. Thank you.

Dh teaching would be great. If not, can they share the teaching? If he won't teach, can they do an alternate schedule where the Mom does the instruction but Dh monitors the independent work? She could look for tutors for some subjects. Would the daughter be ready for auditing some community college classes? They could explore coops. Can the one day she works at home be a weekend so she could have a free weekday to do coop or other activities? They could consider a virtual school. We both work full time but we both have flexible schedules. Hth!

Ferpa laws may not have been in effect when these folks (described in previous posts) were asked. No employer or school can require you to disclose a disability/records related to a disability and no one can access these records without your consent.

Secular history that is representative of all cultures rather than the perspective of white guys.

We tried KISS grammar and Shurley grammar but didn't like either of them. We started when dd was reading at second grade level but it was when she was 6. We have settled into FLL and Practicing Standard Usage.

We school year round. My family needs a great deal of consistency and structure to maintain daily life functioning. I'm sure it sounds cruel and strange, but it is what works for us. The kids have improved so much this way (not just academically).

Excel math is a nice spiral. It is very gentle.
