  1. I watched the video and think he is reading well, except for fluency. To work on that I would read more often with him popcorn style (taking turns). Let him choose the books. Even if he prefers picture books, they are often times a much higher reading level than beginning chapter books.

I love your bookmark for him, but he seems to be jumping all over the page with it. In order to become more fluent, he will have to start tracking the words in advance, before he reads them out loud. You can't raise your voice for a question, if you don't see the question mark at the end of the sentence. Slowly get him used to using his finger instead of a bookmark, or use your own finger at first. Also use your finger when you read to him, so he can track the words as you're reading.

  2. I am experiencing the same thing with my twin boys (6). I don't find reading two books should be a reason for concern, but I just can't wrap my head around being able to listen to an audiobook and read a different book at the same time?! I asked my kiddos what each book is about, and they do seem to comprehend both. I would just leave your son to read whichever way he likes, as long as he also comprehends it.

  3. Your first pick will determine which door will be opened. I diagrammed it the following way:

    #1 *p

    #2

    #3

    #1*

    #2p

#3 ( this door needs to be opened after first pick)

    #1*

#2 (this door needs to be opened after first pick)

    #3p

There are three doors for you to pick. The * stands for the door that has the prize, in my example always #1. The p stands for the door that you picked. In the first example door #2 or #3 can be opened after your initial pick. In example number two and three however, the person who opens the door after your initial pick needs to open the door that does not have the prize. If you look at all three possibilities, in 2/3 the prize is hidden behind the other door. In only 1/3 the prize is hidden in your first initial pick.

  4. Radon. It is a gas that is emitted from the ground you built your house on and causes cancer.

Water here is tested by the city, but your pipes may contain lead. Although lead and asbestos are unlikely to be present if you built your house after 1979. You can ask a home inspector for all of these, I believe.

Look for factories around you that could potentially harm the environment.

I would also look into nutrition (Gluten?).

Hope you'll find out soon what is causing all these health issues! Prayers for you and your family!

  5. I like these books for kids

There is a lot of free material on this site too, and it is a great starting point for an inexperienced native speaker. It includes suggestions for games and a lot of real life conversation topics.

I would not pay $30 per hour though, but rather set a low amount of $15 for the first few weeks and then go up to $20 if the tutor does a good job.

  6. I haven't seen the workbooks, but I don't think they'll be adding much to your math program. Have you looked at the Crewton Ramone videos? They pretty much explain everything, from counting to calculus. You don't need the workbooks, you don't need your kids to write anything down. I just asked my 6-year old kindergartener what 26+35 equals. He came up with the correct answer in his mind and was able to explain how he did it. He did not use the manipulatives. The only thing we do is play once a week with the blocks, and we haven't even been doing that for a year yet. So in my opinion you will not need to order these books, only use what you already have.

ETA: I meant nothing besides the blocks.

  7. It takes many steps for your son to figure out one word at this age. First he needs to recognize the letter, next remember the letter sound, recognize the second letter plus sound...by the time he's at the end of sounding out the whole word, he will have forgotten half of the letter sounds.

If YOU sound out the words really fast, like

"/b/a/t/ What word is that?" , you will turn all these steps into only one, much easier, task. Do this everywhere you go, read all signs this way and have him guess: /s/t/o/p/ , /i/n/ , /g/o/ , you get the point.

  8. We kept our landline for that reason. It's dial-tone only (we would be charged 10 cents per local call, no long distance), and we pay about $11 with taxes, etc per month.

Okay, I would definitely go for that! What provider are you using?

  9.

If you have smart911 in your area and register for it you don't. I love it because you also can enter medical information, information on who lives in your house, etc that the emergency personell (and only them) can pull up if they are called to your house in an emergency. It's more information then they'd have with a call from a landline!

    https://www.smart911.com/

I just checked and it's not available :-(

Sounds like a perfect solution though, I can't wait for them to provide it here!

I do not want to keep adding more minutes to yet another cellphone. My son lost his and the minutes ran out by the time he found it again.

Okay, so I guess I'll have to look for the cheapest landline provider :-(

  10. What about a home companion for a senior citizen/elderly person/what is the PC term these days? LOL

You might find a "grandma or grandpa" who would love to have you bring your boys. The pay is probably about $10/hour depending on where you live. If you went a few days a week for a few hours, you'd gross $100.

Sounds good! I actually found some postings like that.

  11. You are bilingual German? What about helping a German company that markets to the US "englishize" their brochures, etc? There are a few German based companies that could use some help.

Could you name a few of these companies? I have googled it frequently but came up with nothing home based or part time close to where I live.

  12. Thank you for all the helpful replies! I have definitely gotten some good suggestions. The before school care is a great idea, I'll be asking the schools in my neighborhood. Transcription sounds also great, but where to get legitimately started? I will also inquire about the pay I would get for delivering newspaper.

So happy for all these ideas!

I have also looked on care dot com and found surprisingly many families who need a part time or on call babysitter.

One note about my husband: He is a very hard working man who does more than his fair share taking care of his family! I am very happy with the way things are between us, and he obviously does spend time with the kids. There are many other reasons as to why I'd like to be able to take my kids with me to work.

  13. I really need some help please. My children are currently in PS kindergarten, full day. I really want to homeschool them, and my husband is completely behind me in that. I am currently working part time though and we rely on the extra income. All we would need is for me to make $100/week and I could stay home with the kids. I have wrecked my brain so long about this, but come up mostly empty.

The challenge is that I don't want to rely on my hubby to watch the kids while I'm working. He would turn on the TV or let the kids play video games the whole time, and I am dead set against this. What options do I have where the boys can tag along?

I am bilingual German and could tutor, but what about the kids while I do that, and I don't really know where to start?

I am very handy and can build small furniture and then sell them, could that create enough income if you consider time spent and materials bought?

In home daycare: Bottom line is that a fenced in yard would be too expensive to install as an up front expenditure, and it is required in my state.

I also do not like to spend the majority of my time on the computer, so blogging or affiliate marketing are probably out, but I'm open to suggestions.

    Any ideas are very welcome!!!
