you can substitute vinegar for fabric softener...the scent shouldnt linger
We can't line dry anything due to my kids environmental allergies (pollen sticking to clothes---big no no for them).
-
you need the textbooks (which are used like workbooks)
We also had the activity books but you really don't need those---they have more things like cutting in pasting in them, but dont have any extra math that you'd be missing if you didnt get them
I did not buy the teachers guide for Earlybird
-
right now Im wanting the RightStart math games kit for $50
-
a couple times we used those little counting bears....but mostly we used linking cubes. Any time DS got stuck on something I just had to pull out the cubes and it would click for him

Im getting ready to place my order for the Standards Ed Primary 1A & 1B HIGs, textbooks and workbooks
Do I need to order the tests too?
Which would be better...the extra practice or the intensive practice?
And are the CWP worth getting at this level?
Want to order asap so any replies would be greatly appreciated!

technically Im only homeschooling my first grader this year.....but little brother will be doing as much or as little pre-k school work as he wants also (don't have any real goals for him though since he is only 3)

every year we replace crayons and stock up on spiral notebooks (we use them for all sorts of things, not just school work). Then I usually grab any other consumables that are super cheap because we will eventually use them
Plus I have to get all the standard school supplies for my 3 in public school
-
have you explored other options for him.....like having a tutor teach a few classes, or taking him to a couple classes somewhere (my neighbor takes her kids to Kumon for math)? Then he'd still be home, but you'd have more time to get things done other than teaching

:iagree:We love it here. I hope one day they come out on dvds.
Just saw a Sid DVD at Target the other night..only $5 (not sure which one though)

Good luck and have fun! I figure we can always add or reduce as we go along!
Jesi
I agree....the only ones that we will be definitely covering in full will be math & reading. Science and history are just fun add ons at this age (they dont do much of these at all in our public school) and we'll do whatever amount feels right

My kids are suggesting cute things, but they either sound pre-schoolish or they are names of Pokemon characters lol
Dont want:
-- to use our last name as part of the school name for a few reasons
--don't want it to be Christian based
--don't want it to sound too young...needs to last through the school years
--don't want it to sound too girly since its for 2 boys lol
Do want:
--would like something earthy/nature based
OR
--something to do with enlightenment/wisdom/knowledge/peace
OR
--something that just sounds really regal and important .
Any ideas? We've toyed around with some of the names of Greek/Roman Gods, using Lotus or Haven or Rainbows in the name, as well as more obvious choices like Tall Pines Academy etc
thanks!

sounds like my house, except I can't use pregnancy as an excuse lol.

my one target had everything out a few days ago, the other just had the empty bins set up

forgot to add, Im also going to attempt Hooked on Phonics pre-k with my 3 yr old plus FIAR (if you knew my 3 yr old, you'd know why I say "attempt" LOL)
I'm really only doing it b/c he is begging for school and I hope it will keep him out of his brothers school books. I don't expect to accomplish too much but his is very bright and I want to give him the chance to learn (so yeah, wish me luck )

This is our 2nd year homeschooling. Last year we only did McRuffy Phonics/reading, handwriting and Singapore math. I want to add some more this year
DAILY:
--reading--McRuffy phonics
--handwriting--McRuffy
--math--Singapore, McRuffy or RightStart (Still deciding..any input appreciated!)
M/W:
--history--SOTW Vol 1 w/AG, various read alouds
T/TH:
--science--Elemental Science or McRuffy (again, still deciding)
FRIDAY:
--music--Stories of the Great Composers, learning to play the recorder, songs, dancing etc (all really relaxed and fun...no pressure)
ADDITIONAL:
--art---DS is into drawing so we'll do this plus other art throughout the week when inspired
--hope to do some FIAR w/ my 3 yr old and 6yr old can sit in too
--karate twice a week (at night...does this already), may add gymnastics if I can afford it or soccer
--would love to add a language...trying to see where that would fit in and how often (would have to do some on the weekends b/c my DD wants to learn too and she is in PS during the week)
so, how does that look? Realistic or too much? I tend to want to do more than we can usually accomplish lol, but there is so much great material out there! Definitely have to keep science b/c that's what DS is most excited about. I'm hoping to keep everything (other than sports) limited to a couple hours a day
thanks!

last year we had 2 or 3 in out front yard...but I havent seen any this year
Any other cool animal kits/ animal raising you can suggest? I can tie it in with our science
oh and strange question but, does anyone happen to know the ingredients of the tadpole food? We have some major allergies so I have to be cautious
-
thank you!

Today I got the red & orange books, lab annotations and cuisinaire rods.....but I have no clue what Im supposed to do with it all lol
I took a quick look at the annotations but it looked confusing, then had to run out with the kids.
Im used to Singapore workbooks which were much easier for me to navigate. Is there a teacher manual for Miquon that I need, or will I figure it out when I get a chance to really read over the annotations?
I need our math to be quick and simple....DS loves math and he nor I want to be dealing with something fussy. Will Miquon fit that?
(I got it b.c I read it was a good combo with Singapore)
thanks

Has anyone done this? Wondering if it worked well
We did the butterfly one last year and the kids loved it.
Also wondering if there is a place to get tadpoles...anyone know of a good online site for them and supplies? (haven't found any out in nature)

We love Saxon math. My kids don't whine about it, I love teaching it because it's scripted and easy. And they gets lots of review!
Liz in NC
good to know, I like scripted (that's what I love about McRuffy Phonics)
-
We are doing Singapore now and will try the next level, but just in case it is too hard for DS (or I have a hard time teaching it) Id like to have something else as a possible back up. He seems to be good at math so far but I'm not the best at explaining it lol
If we want a secular, spiral approach, what would you suggest? Saxon?
Prefer something that won't be too teacher intensive in the later elementary years (I think I read that RightStart can be this way).

ok then, well I guess I'l go with whatever one I can find the cheapest....(Im not even sure DS will like them)
How do you know if you've broken an arm?
in General Education Discussion Board
Posted
my one DS broke his upper arm bone in half, but it wasn't displaced so the only indicator was swelling and pain
another DS broke his wrist....only minor swellng and pain
DD just recently hit her hand (pinkie finger) on the TV stand and managed to chip a piece of bone off --right on the growth plate. Just had very little swelling and a bruise
All 3 ended up in casts for 6-7 weeks. At our house, any suspected broken bones get taken to the ER since my kids seem to have a knack for breaking things lol
