  1. I have been reading reviews and researching this as an option for us next year. (I will have a 8th, 10 and 11th grader next year) But, like normal, I have found both positive and negative reviews of TT for this level. So I would like to ask you guys some very specific questions. 1) are the algebra 1, geometry and algebra 2 good enough for a college bound student? (for both STEM students or not)? 2) how much review is included? 3) would it work to start using TT at the high school level, if you haven't previously used TT? 4) I read both that TT prepared their student for the ACT tests and for some it didn't. So I was wondering what your experience was with that. please, if there is anything else I need to consider for using TT at the high school level, I would love to hear it. Thanks.
  2. what is the purpose of this site? I mean, is it just for supplimenting your primary curriculum? Is it to take the place of a primary curriculum? How do you use this site? thanks.
  3. I am considering using TT for high school geometry next year for my son. I looked at the link for " is your child ready for our geometry"....and there are some things on that test that I do not think he would know. Is this a "make it or break it deal" or would he still be able to take the class ok? I have never used TT before, so I do not know anything about it. Would it be wise of me to have him do some sort of review before he starts the class next fall. Please advise me as to what I should do. thanks. Kathy
  4. Honestly, I am not sure how much I can teach...or rather...how much she will learn if I try to teach. But, thanks...I will looking MEP....
  5. Please give me some options here. My daughter is not a STEM student...college bound but not in the sciences or math. She took algebra using the program Math Relief Algebra, which I feel is a great program, complete with plenty of practice. So, naturally, I assumed the Math relief Geometry would be a complete....well, after buying it and having my daughter nearly complete it by Christmas, I felt differently. Many days there are no more than 4-6 problems to solve per lesson...and it just doesn't seem to be at the same level of difficulty as the Algebra did. So, now I am trying to decide what to do about it. Do I assume that she has done enough...do I look for something else to add? I looked at Key to geometry...but that didn't seem right....I noticed that great courses has a DVD series...but I am just not sure. Please, tell me some options that I might have? She is a sophomore this year....and next year I had hoped to move on to Algebra 2....that is all she needs for college entrance to the college of her choice. I am open to all ideas you might have. Also, since I have 2 more kids following (one just a year behind), I need to find a different program for geometry (DVD based preferably, but reasonably priced), so ideas for that too are appreciated. thanks. Kathy
  6. wow...I am learning a lot. I have a phone call into a rheumologist hoping to hear back this afternoon (of course it has to be Friday, right?) ....we will get on this ASAP....thanks for the information...didn't know any of this.
  7. why would we go to a rheumatogist? I mean, it doesn't sound like rheumatoid arthritis.
  8. I have never heard of such a doctor, I will look...but since we live in rural NE, I doubt we will find one close enough. But it's worth a look. eta: nope...the closest (and only that I can see) is 3 hours away.
  9. Jean, I agree with everything you said. So, where do I go from here? I did take her to our local clinic and the doctor was as clueless as we are....we do have a hand specialist about 45 minutes from here...but he mainly treats injuries and does surgeries on injured hands...I do not think he would be helpful...she didn't injure herself... so we just try a different doctor? what would you do?
  10. do you think that my daughter's hand issues can be caused by a spine issue? It doesn't hurt all of the time...but the duration is longer and longer with each episode.
  11. I thought it might be RA, but when I found this, I realized that she doesn't have any of these symptoms in the way they are described...so now what??? RA SymptomsAlthough RA is a chronic—or persisting—disease, symptoms may come and go unpredictably. That’s because RA symptoms come in flares where there may be periods of increased disease activity and fade or disappear in periods of remission. During a flare, you may notice some or all of the following symptoms: Painful, swollen, warm joints Pain and stiffness lasting for more than 30 minutes in the morning or after a long rest Inflammation in hands (wrist and finger joints), neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, or feet Symmetrical pattern of inflammation, meaning both sides of the body are impacted at once Fatigue, occasional fever, and a general feeling of discomfort
  12. That is what I want to think....I have heard others (in the past) say they like their chiropractors....but I never really paid much attention...so now I am not even sure who those "others" are...to ask for recommendations.
  13. If you have been following my threads on my daughters hands, you will know that she has been having problems. 1) swan neck deformity in her fingers 2) had pain and tightness from her index finger through her wrist to her forearm (currently not hurting) 3) aches in between her thumb and index finger (this morning for the first time complained of joint pain in her thumb) considering arthritis as the problem. 2 friends of mine suggested chiropractic care.... my only expeirence with chiropractors has been less than good... 1) I went to a chiropractor for neck and back pain....went multiple times for an adjustment...never helped...stopped going...months later, pain went away after I changed pillows. 2) took the same daughter to a "all natural" chiropractor for a knee thing...she used lasers, and tinctures and heating lamps...didn't help, but when she told me that my daughter needs to be tested for diabetes, I was out of there...(that was 5 years ago...no diabetes) and when I took her to a children's hospital doctor, we were told that 4 months of staying off it would help...and it did. She was on crutches for that time and she is fine. So, I am a bit leery....but I am also becoming desperate. I don't want to put her on all sort of medicines for arthritis but I am also feeling a bit stuck. If anybody has used chiropractic care for something similar, please give me some guidance. thanks.
  14. We are using Friendly Chemistry and up until now, we have been moving through it fairly smoothly. But the further we get the more we struggle. I have contacted the writer and he has been nothing but amazing, but I am now to the point where I fear we are asking him for more help than he is able to help (meaning, he has his own life and very busy with other projects and his family that he can't give the time that we might need). So I am not sure what to do now. I am not sure how we are going to be able to finish without some additional help someplace. We did try Khan Academy for Balancing chemical reactions...and it was only barely helpful...probably because the process was quite different than what FC did...and of course the problems weren't exactly like the ones my kids were asked to do. The chapters we have left to cover are: Intro to Stoichiometry Prediciting Grams of Product Prediciting grams of product from grams of reactant Do I have enough reactant? Mixing compounds with Water to make solutions Incorporating Molarity into Stoichiometric Problems Determining the Needed Amount of a solution to perform a reaction Properties of Gases and How Gases can be measured in reactions How changing temperatures affect gases How changing Pressures affect gases The combined gas laws. Please, please, if anybody has a thought for me, I would be so grateful!!!
  15. we are trying to get away from "cozy"...that is what we have now.
  16. Assuming that quality of campers are basically the same within a brand name (even though the configuration might be different)... what brand of camper do you have and what do you like about it (quality wise) or not like about it? We are trying to decide if we want to buy new (but look for a cheaper camper) or buy used (but maybe it will be a better quality of camper), but we do not know which brands fall into which category. We know that Coachman seems like a pretty good camper...but beyond that...we know very little. If you have any information that would help us, that would be great.
  17. Has anybody here used this for High School? Can you tell me more about it? Is it a full HS credit...or supplemental? thanks.
  18. yes, but now not $30 each. The last 2 more so than the first...the first seems to be to loose at the neckline...I think.
  19. it's also the neckline....I don't like loose fitting lower neckline shirts...but I like the lower neckline of a cami. I don't have much in front...so I am not trying to show off anything....but I don't like the look of regular t-shirt type neckline under things either. Does that make sense?
  20. I am looking at maybe buying the Scoring Services offered by Essentials in Writing this year....but for a year, it's nearly $100. Can't decide if it would be worth it or not. I am not a writer, I can't teach writing and I have a hard time grading writing in an objective way. SO, for those purposes, it would worth the money IF the feedback from EIW is helpful to the student. They only grade one writing per lesson...so they don't help along the way...just the final writing. WE LOVE EIW and do not plan to change from that... so if you have used this service, I would love to hear your feedback. thanks.
  21. I like the look of camis under sweaters and shirts...but sometimes I want the warmth of long sleeves. Does a type of shirt exist that gives you the look of a cami, and yet have long sleeves? If so, can you link me a couple so I can see what they look like and where I can get them? thanks.
  22. Where are you finding Dr Quinn and the waltons?
  23. we typically camp about 30 nights out of the summer...if not more...and we like camping...not hotel rooming. I know that for a person who camps only 5 nights a summer, it wouldn't make sense....but because we camp, we are seeing parts of the country we probably wouldn't... but thanks for the perspective.
