  1. I am sure some one here has formulated a list (I think I have seen it before, but didn't need it at the time, so I ignored it) of good videos that would go along with World and US History events...can someone help me find it? thanks.
  2. can it be done independently for older kids or not? What age group did you do this with? Middle school or High School?
  3. Has anybody here used Dave Raymond's history? https://www.compassclassroom.com/history I would love hear opinions on this. thanks.
  4. I have seen the FundaFunda stuff....did you use it? Is there something similar for world History someplace? Where do you get a list of primary sources? About how many essays did you require? Did you provide the topics or let your kids pick them...or a bit of both? Did you have a list of topics to pick from? where did you get your list from? thanks very much for your help!!!
  5. oh, thank you for that. I would love to know what text you used as a spine. Did you assign a lecture daily or so many a week? Did you have daily assignments...(written)...how did you use the text? thanks so much for your help!!!
  6. what would you make sure you included? Or what requirements would you make sure you had? If you wanted a DVD or video component, what would you include? What kind of assignments would you make sure you have? Any tips you would add to help me? thanks.
  7. My son wants to study astronomy for science next year. The ones I have found aren't all astronomy...they are also weather and other earth science topics. Are there any programs that would be a year long astronomy course? I would greatly prefer that they be Christian based. Do I have any options?
  8. I have a son who needs a DVD ...but he does better with a mastery program. I know there is Saxon, but that is spiral. I am also familiar with Teaching Textbooks, but I am not sure if this is mastery or spiral. What other options might I have? We can not afford to pay lots of money for this...so a program like Derek Owens is out of the question. thanks.
  9. she didn't do many labs...but she did do a few. She just felt the kids were learning the concepts without the labs and the labs were just to solidify the concepts...not teach something more. Does that make sense?
  10. Next year my 2 oldest kids will be a sophomore and junior. When my dd was in 9th grade, she did world geography. This year, both my son as a Freshman and my daughter as a sophomore did Notgrass Government. So as I am looking in to what to do next year...I figure world and US history is what needs to happen. I started looking at Biblioplan http://www.biblioplan.net/p/welcome-to-biblioplan.html and really like it...but it's a 4 year program...and I only have 2 years with my daughter and 3 with my son. If I were to use this, does anybody have any great ideas as to how it could be done? Maybe you did something similar... or should I completely abort the idea because it just can't happen. I have another kid...8th grader next year...so whatever I buy, I will have one more chance of having him go through the entire program...for what that is worth. thanks.
  11. I don't think she wants to lie...but is feeling like in order for her child to have a "good transcript" she feels like she has no choice. Up to this point, as far as I know, the child has no idea that the mom was thinking about doing this...that is why I was wondering if I could suggest an alternative that would be better than nothing. I have no idea just how many labs were done...I could find out for sure. One thing I do know, is that the labs weren't very good in the program she chose and to her they seemed sort of dumb....and useless and the kid was learning the concept without the labs.
  12. so, just wondering...if she had her child watch some labs on you tube or something, could she call them virtual labs? And would that be acceptable to most colleges? especially if they don't specifically say no virtual labs? I was trying to see if I could give her an option so she doesn't have to lie on the transcript if getting the materials and doing the labs are just too much. I bet I could find a generic lab report form too, that could be used, right?
  13. her argument is that her child is not going into a science field, and the required science classes in college are so basic that it simply won't matter.
  14. This might seem like a really dumb question...but I was really curious about something. Another homeschooling family close to us doesn't take their job as seriously as we do in our home, and they have high schoolers who are college bound. The mom was talking to me about filing out transcripts and how she might sort of fudge on some information like, Biology with labs....she told me they sort of did some of the labs, but not all of them...but she still planned on putting "Biology with labs" on her child's transcript. Granted this child is not a STEM student, so the fact that they didn't do the labs won't really matter as far as future studies...but my question is....how will the college know that she fudged on that information? or will they? and does it really matter...other than the fact that she is misrepresenting her child's high school science? Does that make sense? thanks.
  15. you are right that different kids need different things...let me share with you about my kids: dd16: struggles with math, college bound, but not STEM. Her college of choice only requires Algebra 1, geo and Algebra 2. She only needs Algebra 2. We have been using Math Relief with good results...however, the geometry isn't very good, I don't think...she finished it and is now going through Geometry on khan Academy. Hoping that will be enough for her. We own Math Relief Algebra 2, so we will probably use that for her. ds15: is good at math, but doesn't like it. Doesn't plan on being a STEM kid....but is most likely college bound....we just don't where yet. He is currently doing Math relief Algebra 1 and is doing ok with it. But I don't plan on using Math Relief Geometry with him...so i am looking for something new...but it needs to be DVD based. So that is why I am considering TT. ds12: struggles with math somewhat. We are doing Rod and Staff and it's going ok. Not great, but ok. He loves science and wants to do more with science, but that usually means higher math too. So, I want to make sure he has math that he likes and understands, but that is rigorous enough.... so, based on that, is there anything you all can recommend? One thing I am thinking is if my ds15 uses TT for geometry, will I use TT for Algebra 2...or what? sigh....at some point, I just need to make a decision and go with it. still listening to all of you. thanks.
  16. you are right...that is what makes it super hard. educating our kids is such a huge responsibility that I fear make a huge mistake. thanks for all the advice.
  17. another question on TT....are ALL of the problems worked out completely someplace? There is nothing I hate more than the answer key being just the answers...and not the entire solution.
  18. GRRRR!!!!!!!! this is so hard...I hear both sides of this...and I just don't know which way to go. thanks for all of your thoughts, however, I do appreciate it.
  19. quick question about switching to Saxon....we tried Saxon when we first started homeschooling and it wasn't a good fit. So we switched to a mastery math program and that was much better. So I am debating whether or not trying it again, now that the kids are much older, and using the DVDs, if we would have more success than we did 8 years ago... Can anybody speak to that? thanks.
  20. I have been reading reviews and researching this as an option for us next year. (I will have a 8th, 10 and 11th grader next year) But, like normal, I have found both positive and negative reviews of TT for this level. So I would like to ask you guys some very specific questions. 1) are the algebra 1, geometry and algebra 2 good enough for a college bound student? (for both STEM students or not)? 2) how much review is included? 3) would it work to start using TT at the high school level, if you haven't previously used TT? 4) I read both that TT prepared their student for the ACT tests and for some it didn't. So I was wondering what your experience was with that. please, if there is anything else I need to consider for using TT at the high school level, I would love to hear it. Thanks.
  21. what is the purpose of this site? I mean, is it just for supplimenting your primary curriculum? Is it to take the place of a primary curriculum? How do you use this site? thanks.
  22. I am considering using TT for high school geometry next year for my son. I looked at the link for " is your child ready for our geometry"....and there are some things on that test that I do not think he would know. Is this a "make it or break it deal" or would he still be able to take the class ok? I have never used TT before, so I do not know anything about it. Would it be wise of me to have him do some sort of review before he starts the class next fall. Please advise me as to what I should do. thanks. Kathy
  23. Honestly, I am not sure how much I can teach...or rather...how much she will learn if I try to teach. But, thanks...I will looking MEP....
