  1. My new find!

    A Fresh Approach.

They offer Algebra I, Algebra II & Geometry. The books are nice! Black and white, hardcover, but have lines for writing in the book (if you want to use it as a workbook).

20 Chapters are in Algebra I, broken down into roughly 4-7 Parts. Each Part has anywhere from 10-20 problems. All the answers are available. The odd numbered answers are in the back of the text. The even numbered answers are available in a separate teacher key -- and those show how to work the problem.

I absolutely love it!!! I switched my 12yo over to this curriculum after using Teaching Textbooks since 4th grade. TT just didn't seem to cover the material that I wanted it to cover.

So I'm now set for math for at least three years! She's working on a prealgebra program at the moment and then she said she's tackling precalculus / calculus. I'm just hoping she'll have it completed by the time my 8th grader is in the 11th grade!

Here's a link to the site:

  2. I want a great foreign language program, complete with native speakers who speak slowly at first. Normal conversational speed is too fast for me to follow. There are so many available, but I have yet to find one I really like.

    :iagree:

I'm thrilled with all of my curriculum....except I *still* haven't found a foreign language program for my middle schooler / will be a high schooler next year.

  3. No phones at the dinner table!

No phone use while driving. If there's an emergency, pull into a parking lot somewhere and make the call.

My oldest has a smartphone that she would surgically attach to herself if she could.

My 18yo never used his cellphone at all so it was taken over by my 12yo. He has a 13yo best friend and they text back and forth from time to time, but it hasn't gotten too out of hand (so far).

  4. Hits:

Beautiful Feet Geography -- loved it so much we're going to use BF history for the next 3 years! It's a breath of fresh air after using Sonlight for the last 10 years. On to Early US & World History for 2012-2013.

Rainbow Science -- completed Year 1 -- can't wait to do Year 2!

Spelling Power -- again...it does the job. Son completes the program this year and he's thrilled to do so.

Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings -- sorry to see it completed! Really enjoyed the program

Christian Light Education 1st Grade -- WOW! This is the first program that has clicked for my youngest child, who has special needs. We bought the entire program -- all subjects. On to CLE 2nd Grade!

    Misses:

Oak Meadow 2 -- it just didn't do the job for my youngest...she has a severe language delay and just couldn't articulate whether she understood everything

    So/So:

Teaching Textbooks Prealgebra -- it got the job done, but we're switching to A Fresh Approach this year for Algebra I. I just don't think it covers what I need it to cover for my son, who's considering majoring in science for college.

  5. I like "Launch Party" too!

My dd had one of these when she graduated from the community college last month. (She will also be going away to college in August).

We'd had a graduation party just a few years before when she graduated from our homeschool and didn't want to do one again for the community college, because she'll be graduating from her 4 year college two years from now and she didn't want to set a record for the most graduation parties in honor of one person. ;)

  6. Here's my 12 year old 8th grader's list:

English - Winston Grammar Advanced / Writing Strands "Creating Fiction" / Spelling Power Levels J & K

Math - Teaching Textbooks Algebra I

Science - Rainbow Science Year 2 / Knee Deep in Anatomy (frog dissection extra supplement) / "Science Rocks" with our homeschool co-op

History - Beautiful Feet's Early US & World History - Jr. High Level

Art - Dubosque's I Can Draw Books - Dinosaurs / Rainforest Animals / Grassland Animals / Art Classes with our homeschool co-op, taught by a professional artist

    Logic - Traditional Logic I

Foreign Language - The Learnables Spanish I

Music - Private Piano Lessons / "The History of Rock and Roll" Music Appreciation course

PE - Tae Kwon Do -- he's an assistant instructor (1st degree Black Belt)

    Extras - Special Olympics Volunteer

*Might be adding in The Latin Road to English Grammar -- waiting for the sample to arrive in the mail!*

    ..............

My 10 year old has special needs. She's currently working through CLE 2nd grade for all subjects. She will attend the local public school for 3 hours a day for therapy (OT, speech, and ABA) and will continue homeschooling in the afternoons.

  7. Thanks for all your help and advice. If it ever happens again we will do as directed and put it in a bush or tree. I couldn't just leave it though as our dog or cat would have gotten it I'm sure... or maybe even the chickens.

I found a number for our local wildlife bird rescue just now and will give them a call here shortly. It is doing amazingly well so far and I don't want to see it start declining and I don't want my son seeing that either... so we will hand it over to the experts.

    Thanks again :)

    Cool beans!

You did a nice thing rescuing the bird. Make sure you take pictures of your son with the bird so he can remember the experience. :)

  8. Do you have a wildlife sanctuary / bird sanctuary, etc. near you?

This happened to us years ago and there was a wildlife / bird sanctuary about 45 minutes from our house. We found them in the phone book. Your local animal shelter may have a phone number for one nearby, too.

We wrapped the bird up in a towel and drove it up there and they raised it and set it free when it was old enough to learn to fly.

My oldest son still remembers this! He was 4 years old and he was the one who found it on the ground. He named him "Fluffer". :D

  9. I saw another high school math program at our recent homeschool convention and I'll include the link below.

A Fresh Approach. They offer Algebra I, Algebra II & Geometry (so far).

The books are designed for self-study and are in workbook format (instead of having to write everything out on paper). The explanations were very thorough!

They looked really good. Someone here posted that you can also find them on Rainbow Resource, but you can view samples on the website below.

  10. We wrapped up last year's studies the 1st week of May and will start the new school year on Monday!

We'll take off a week for 4th of July and 3 weeks off in August for various fun summer activities...but for those weeks that we're doing school, we are doing school. All subjects...normal school day.

We'll also take a week off at Thanksgiving...3 weeks off at Christmas...and a week off for Spring Break in March. We should wrap up the school year by the 1st week of May...complete our standardized testing...and then we're off again until the middle of June .. and it starts all over again! :D

  12. My oldest daughter (21) will be a Junior at a 4 year college this fall. We homeschooled her through high school, but she started taking classes at the local community college via dual enrollment when she was 16. She received her AA degree at the age of 20 and transferred to her 4 year college with guaranteed acceptance.

My oldest son (18) just graduated from our homeschool last month. He'll be taking classes at the local community college this fall.

My youngest son (12) will be starting the 8th grade this month and we plan to homeschool him through high school.

My youngest daughter (10) has special needs. She will be going to public school 3 hours a day (1 hour of speech / 1 hour of OT / 1 hour of ABA therapy) this coming fall. We will continue homeschooling her in the afternoons.

  13. Our homeschool group charges $10 per year for membership. They send this to the church where we hold our co-op at the end of the year as a "thank you gift" but there's no statement of faith required to join the group.

Science co-op is $65.00 per year (but you can break it down by fall and spring semesters if you don't want to pay it all at once). And the Art co-op is $70.00 per year (same payment rules as for the science class)...but both fees cover all materials (paint, paper, science equipment, etc.) so I see it as a real bargain.

Co-op day is the 3rd Friday of the month with Science in the morning (9:30 - 11:45) and Art in the afternoon (1:30 - 3:00). The kids bring their own lunch and that's from roughly 12:00 - 12:30 and then they run around for an hour in the church playground to burn up energy. I love having both co-ops on the same day! I just schedule this as an 'off day' in our lesson plans.
