  1. Hi,

I am planning for next year and would love your opinion!!

We have been using Abeka LA (1st grade) this year. I don't really have any complaints except that I hear that later it can be overkill. And I know that their writing is supposed to be weak.

I thought next year we might (not sure yet) switch to R&S or CLE. I think I have narrowed it down to CLE if we switch at all.

We use CLE for Math and LOVE it!!! It is the one subject that I am completely satisfied with and plan to use for a long time. So I thought we would probably love CLE LA as well. And if the writing was better, then I wouldn't absolutely have to add in another writing program. I would have a complete LA program that was good all around.

What do you think? Would you switch? I would continue to do Abeka's phonics until the end of 2nd grade. And I want to start a spelling program next year (probably AAS). I did not care for Abeka's spelling. How does Abeka LA compare to CLE LA? Has anyone switched from one to the other?

I would love to hear from you! I appreciate all of the advice from you guys who have been hsing longer than me! :001_smile:

  2. We have come full circle after experimenting with additional writing curriculums. We are now using only Rod and Staff grades 4 and 6 along with additional writing as part of history, literature, and science. The boys are able to take what they are learning in R&S and apply it to the other writing they are doing. I really feel that it is very complete and clearly explains everything. Have you had a chance to look at the table of contents yet for the grade you are interested in?

I have not checked out the table of contents yet, but will do that! Thanks for your input!

  3. Hi,

I am making my plans for next year. We are currently using Abeka for LA and are thinking of switching next year to R&S. My dd will be in 2nd grade next year. Do I need to add a writing program? How do I know which writing program to add?

I would love any input! Writing is the one subject that I feel that I am lacking! I am tempted to hire someone to teach my daughter how to write at some point. :-) Is there a class I can take? Or is there one writing program that is better for people like me! :-)

  4. My dd6 is in 1st grade this year and we are using Abeka for LA. She is doing really well with it. If I continue on with it next year, will I need to add anything else to it like writing or vocabulary? I do plan on adding a different spelling program (probably AAS).

Would you stick with Abeka for LA? Will it cover everything she needs to know?

Some others that I have thought of are R&S, CLE (we use their math and LOVE it!), and GWG (along with a writing program).

  5. Oh, it's so fun to be at that beginning stage and figuring out things! :) You should fill in your sig, so we know what grades you're dealing with. Do you have all littles?

I have had company in town, so I haven't been on the computer much. I should fill in my sig. I haven't taken the time to figure out how to do it. :-) I do have little ones. I have a 6dd, 4ds, and a 2dd.

  6. I do really need to wait until the conference in the spring. I went last year, but went straight for SL. It is my first year and at the time had not heard of any of the others and had my heart set on SL. I just get impatient wanting to figure it out now for next year. :-) And I don't know anyone who uses any of these (except SL). I do have SOTW and use it in place of CHOW w/SL whenever I can. I do really like it.

TOG has always intrigued me, but from what I can see online looks a little intimidating.

Thank you guys for all of your suggestions!

  7. I am planning for next year and was wondering how HOD, MFW, VP and WP compare to SL? We are using SL core 1 this year and a little bit of SOTW (my dd will be 7 in June). I wish I could get my hands on them. It's so hard to just see samples online.

Which one would be the easiest to implement? I am looking for History, Science, and Bible. I have heard HOD doesn't take too long each day.

My other thought for next year was to use a textbook (BJU or Abeka) for a spine and add in fun read-alouds. I know...I'm all over the place. I would love some feedback. :-)
