  1. Thanks pbajgrow!

I really like Sonlight's readers better and she is really enjoying them! I noticed that you use Abeka's Letters and Sounds, but FLL for grammar. I have been tempted to use something else for language/grammar and stick with Abeka phonics b/c that is what we started with. How does that work for you? For Abeka phonics, do you teach the whole lesson or do you just use the Letters and Sounds workbook? I always do the whole lesson in the teacher's manual and was wondering if it was really necessary.

  2. If she is reading well you probably don't need to cover formal phonics. I would recommend you use the phonics based spelling program. That would catch any gaps she might have. All About Spelling is one of the easiest to use, but Spell to Write and Read and Writing Road to Reading are also good programs.

We are actually getting ready to start AAS in a few weeks! And I am very excited about it!

I have Phonics Pathways and thought about skipping ahead a little since she knows a lot of it. She has had a year of Abeka phonics and she is reading, but not great. I just wonder if Phonics Pathways might be easier for her to understand without all the bells and whistles. And then I could use either R&S or CLE for grammar. I just wonder sometimes if I'm doing a lot of extra work with Abeka, when really there is an easier way to do it.

Sorry it took me so long to respond! I am 28 weeks pregnant and have been having lots of contractions and found out Tuesday that my cervix is starting to change. So I am on light bedrest now! It's been a crazy week!

Thank you so much for your replies!

  3. My dd7 (2nd grade) went to K and then I started homeschooling in 1st grade. Going into 1st grade she did not know how to read. We have used Abeka for Phonics....well pretty much for everything LA. She is reading now, but not super fast or anything.

I was just wondering how long I need to teach phonics? Is giving her the Abeka Letters and Sounds worksheet enough or do I need to teach the whole lesson? Or maybe letting her work through the Explode the Code books enough?

The reason I was asking is b/c I was thinking of switching LA. I think Abeka is a great program, but very teacher intensive.

I've thought about Rod & Staff, CLE, or FLL. And maybe also purchasing WWE in addition.

The only reason I wouldn't leave Abeka is b/c we started with their phonics and I wouldn't want to just stop with the phonics if she still needed it.

I have a newborn on the way and was trying to make things a little easier. :-)

Would love any suggestions you might have!

  4. This is our first year using HOD Beyond and we are really enjoying it. We are using HOD for History, Bible, and Poetry. Is there any reason to supplement or add anything additional for the History? Just curious what some of you thought that have used it for History.

    Thank you!

  5. I was thinking of purchasing the Flashmaster from Sonlight and was wondering if any of you have used it?

I am looking for a way for my dd7 to practice her math facts without me having to drill her with the cards. I have a new baby coming in December and 2 preschool age children, and the math facts are just not getting done.

Do you think it's ok to use something like Flashmaster rather than drilling with the Math cards?

  6. Have you looked at MFW Adventures? It's a one-year overview of American history (highlights key people and events), the 50 states, learning the names and characteristics of Jesus, and then the science themes are closely tied with the names of Jesus (i.e., the Bread of Life). All the *scheduled* readings and enrichment subjects are included in the Basic and Deluxe packages, and then there's an additional, very extensive (about 400 titles) booklist in the back of the TM. These are optional as time and interest allow. It's a fun year. :)

They have recommendations for math and LA, but you can use whatever you want there.

I have thought about ordering it before making my final decision. I may do that. Thanks for the advice!!

  7. I've used all of those things... SL Core 1, SOTW 1, MOH 1, MFW (3 plus years). I'm now using Little Hearts for His Glory with my son who recently turned 7. It's my favorite by far. All of the choices that you have mentioned are good ones! But, I love Little Hearts (we haven't used any other HOD programs, except we just started Preparing with my older son) the best. It is just adorable. My son looks forward to it everyday and begs me to do it when I'd rather be doing other things. It is just alot of fun, it's very age-appropriate, the books are so good. It's easy to implement and takes us around an hour a day.

I do think OhElizabeth is right, for sure. Focusing on the basics is most important. But, if you want to include history and you want a curriculum (rather than just reading library books or something less structured), HOD is a very do-able choice. I'm glad I don't have to depend on the library, plan many projects, pick and choose books from a book list, or anything else that would take up more of my time.

As for CM, HOD does promote itself as a CM curriculum. There are aspects of it that are very CM. But, at the lower levels, it really doesn't feel soooooo CMish to me. I wouldn't let that one thing stop me from trying it if you otherwise feel led to it. At this level, the CM influence is shown in HOD's use of less books read over a longer period of time (compared to some other curricula) and a focus on oral rather than written narration.

I love the history in Little Hearts. It covers alot of Biblical history, some World and Church history, and a good bit of American history. I love the variety and think it'll give my son a good overview of all of history. Little Hearts takes us about an hour to complete.

Thanks so much for the wonderful advice!! I am really thinking I will give HOD Beyond a try!

Thanks too JenniferB! I may give HOD a try and if it's too much or doesn't work out I will come back to SOTW.

  8. I think you should focus on LA and math and just get SOTW on audio to put in the car. Really and truly. Your dc is 6 and you have a baby on the way. MOH is too old for her, and the rest just isn't likely to get done. Focus on LA and math.

I actually just changed my signature....my daughter is 7 now. I know that doesn't make a huge difference, I am just ready to find a good fit for history.

    Thanks for your response!

  9. Correction to above statement:

Little Hearts for His Glory is world history that leads into American so it is a nice mix. About 1/2 year of each.

I would use HOD cuz of the simplicity. No you do not have to do all of the projects. The program is not dependent on them, but they do add to it.

I think HOD appeals to me because it seems simple and I think it would get done.

    Thanks for your response!

  10. Are you planning on continuing with Sonlight?

    Tiffany

I was not planning on continuing with Sonlight. I loved so many of the books, but it was just not getting done. And of course I am thinking ahead and wondering how I could do 2 or 3 cores when I am homeschooling my others as well.

Do you want world history or American history? SOTW is world, HOD (the first 3 programs) are American history. If you have a preference, that could decide it for you. I am using BLHFHG because I wanted to do American history, and I could get science thrown in there as well.

So, if someone used SOTW Vol. 1-4 and then cycled through it again...when does American History fit in there? That is something I was curious about.

I guess I would like to do American History.

She is six. I doesn't matter. Do what is easy for you being pg and with a new baby. The goal is that she think history is fun, not that you spend a fortune and check off all of the boxes.

My daughter is actually 7....I need to update my signature. :-) I know it still probably doesn't matter that much. I am just ready to find a good fit for us and I would like to do history next year.

  11. and it's driving me crazy!! I can't decide whether to use SOTW Vol. 1 or HOD. I'm also tempted to order MFW and MOH just to take a look at it.

My daughter will be in 2nd grade next year. My other 2 children will be in PreK 3 and PreK 4 at the church down the road and I have a baby due in December. I need something that is going to get done.

I like SOTW, but am not sure if it would take a lot of extra time to find the additional readings. And if I did SOTW, would I also need to do Geography? Or is SOTW complete by itself?

HOD is appealing to me b/c it is planned for me and is intertwined with the bible. I also like that Geography is included. I wouldn't say that CM is my style, so I wasn't sure if HOD would work. Does that really matter? Would I have to do all of the hands on?

I would love any advice!! :-)

  12. I was just wondering how some of you do map work with SOTW Vol. 1? Do you just use the map in the student pages or do you actually map it on a blank map?

Also, I've had trouble finding the additional readings at the library....do any of you buy the books? Or are they really necessary? Is an encyclopedia as a cross-reference enough?

What is your favorite encyclopedia that SOTW recommends?

    Thank you!!!

  13. I am making plans for next year and trying to plan ahead. Right now I am only homeschooling 1 child, but eventually it will be 4. I am expecting baby #4 in December. :001_smile:

We send our children to preschool (which also includes kindergarten).

I was wondering which program would be easier to combine the children down the road.....HOD or MFW? I have ordered HOD just to take a look at and I like the looks of it, but can't imagine doing 3 programs! I took a peek at MFW at the convention in Atlanta and I really liked the looks of it too. The lady at the booth made it sound like the younger kids could just tag along with MFW.

Or maybe it's best just to stick with SOTW? Would it be easier to combine? I was just excited about what HOD and MFW would be studying for 2nd grade and I like that the bible is integrated.

Here's what my next couple of years would look like:

    2nd grader

    3rd grader

    1st grader

    4th grader

    1st grader

    2nd grader

    5th grader

    2nd

    3rd

    6th

    3rd

    4th

    7th

    1st

    4th

    5th

    8th

    and so on......

Maybe I shouldn't think so far ahead.....I was just trying to choose something and stick with it.

Any suggestions would be great! :001_smile:
