  1. I want your opinions and why. We have been going back to cover things not mastered at this point so when we go back to Pre-Algebra and beyond I want to buy the best program. My 14 yo just left PS last year and we have been battling the unschooling and figuring out what we don't know. It's progressing and if you have read my posts before he is a math and science geek. He just missed some things so rather than push further and struggle we have gone back a little to get things not mastered. He is doing very well. He finished a 1/3 of 6th grade math (yes it has gone that far) already in less than a week. I think we should be finished in a few weeks if he's where I think he is.

I bought Saxon Math Algebra 1/2 but I'm not sure if it will work for us. What is rigorous and challenging? We will be heading in the AP direction with math. He will be entering 9th grade soon but I know most kids are in Pre-Algebra in 7th or 8th grade. Thanks for your help.

  2. If your daughter is not going to take the AP or SAT II subject tests, then I would not worry about whether she finishes Biology in May or September.

However, in our case my daughter is preparing to take the AP Biology exam in May and we are working hard to finish the BJU text so that she can study for the AP exam.

We study Apologia (which is easier to undertand than BJU) when we run into something in BJU that we cannot understand. Actually each and everyday we have 3 books opended up to study Biology: 1) BJU Biology 2) Apologia Biology 3) AP Biology from Princeton Review. This way we are able to understand what BJU is saying. They seem to have too much crammed in one page and every page is like that. This makes it a very slow reading.

Apologia does an excellent job explaining difficult principles or terms. However, some people suggested that it would not prepare my daughter for the AP exam.

That's why I am using 3 different books just in case you are wondering why.

My daughter works on Biology between 3 to 4 hours per day! It is consuming her day. But I figured it's just one year and we will get through it by God's grace.

My friend's son studied BJU Biology along with Princeton Review AP Biology and scored very well on the AP exam.

I hope this helps. Be encouraged in the Lord. :grouphug:

    Phillipians 1:6

Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

I'm conflicted with this a little. We are thinking of doing Apologia or BJU and adding the a different College Biology book. Any reason why are doing all three and not just Apologia and Advanced or are you doing the BJU in place of the two Apologia classes? Sorry to go off topic but I'm wondering about all of this. It sounds like it will take us more time then I had set aside for.

  3. We've been using Apologia Biology rather than BJU, BUT -- same experience here with it taking so long. I decided last year, when we were getting way behind, to just do what we could, and finish it this year. We got through 1- of the 16 chapters last year, and we will most likely finish those remaining 6 (plus the labs) in January, which will leave us almost a full semester to do a health unit and go more in depth in the human body than what is covered in the Apologia.

By the end of this year we will be done with Logic and the extra history and lit. we wanted to cover, so next year we will have more time for the science and should be able to finish Chemistry in one year. On the transcripts I will just put down "Biology = 1 credit"; no need to to explain how we scheduled it. :001_smile:

BEST of luck, whatever you decide to do! Warmly, Lori D.

OT but what Logic are you using? I do agree who cares when it was finished or how just that it was finished. I have a science major so I'm a little more nervous now but it could happen to us and I'll prepare our sked for at least six hours.

  4. My brother teaches AP bio, using the aforementioned Campbell text. I showed him the scope and sequence of Apologia bio including the "advanced" portion, which is just a human body section, and he thought it didn't even come close - especially as someone said in things like biochemistry. He said it didn't even cover whole areas on his syllabus.

The Campbell text sounds like it's a good standard to follow - if you look at it's TOC, you'd have a good idea of what topics they're expecting to be covered.

Where do you find this information out? I did find this info but I'm not sure if it's a general rule of thumb or something else.

    http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/ap/students/biology/ap-cd-bio-0708.pdf

It has every subject and what AP info is being taught. This is great info though.

  5. Neither are going to be AP level; that requires a college-level text and both BJU and Apologia are high school texts.

I've read here that BJU imcompasses both Biology and the Human Anatomy in the one year but you have to do it all to accomplish that which then equals the AP part since it includes the Apologia Advance part which I thought counted as the AP part for Apologia. I'm a little confused. How do you make it AP?

Sure, especially if you are schooling year-round. In fact, Apologia will take you slightly less than a traditional school year if you are doing 1 module every two weeks.

Is there any way you can get your hands on the books? Borrow from someone or go to a convention or local homeschool store? There is nothing like sitting down and looking at the books to help you decide which would be a better fit for your dc.

    Lisa

Actually I may be able to do that since I will be going to convention this year. I'm looking for a new math product for us so I'm going to check it out there. I may be able to view it from someone else also. Thanks for the suggestion.

How can I get AP science at this point? anyone

  6. Hello,

My 14 yo was pulled from PS last year to homeschool. I've been spending time finding out where he is on the learning curve. I guess I made several mistakes in figuring out what to do.

BJU Life Science or Apologia Physical Science: Are they the same science?

I’ve read several posts regarding the differences but it mainly addresses Biology. I like the more rigorous study with BJU and the fact that it is more of an AP science. I’m thinking we could do that or do Apologia Biology with a coop with Advanced Biology during the summer. Is this an option? I haven’t seen either book but I’m trying to make the better long term decision. He loves science and intends to be a Scientific Engineer.

When trying to figure out what he knew in PS we found out some weird things. They taught Earth Science and then did some life science also and things along with it. I don’t want him to miss anything important and this high school planning is quite overwhelming to me. I don’t want my fears to give him less. He has learning issues but seems to excel in Science. They told me he read at a 5th/6th grade level but he seemed to do just fine when we did the first chapter in BJU Life Science. He comprehended everything pretty much. He does struggle with other subjects in reading but this is not one of them. I know that we are at a disadvantage since we do school year round working with co-ops but like hubby said this is the nice thing about homeschooling.

  7. That is what I was thinking. He knows a lot of the concepts but missed some so that is how he got by. I know that he wants to do Science Engineering in College so I figure that he must get those missed concepts. I bet we blow right through. I'm just second guessing my choices. TT is cool but I just can't see us doing MUS long term. I like both. lol He just thinks MUS is weird.

  8. Hello,

I'm conflicted on where to go. I have a 14yo 8th grader who has a knack for math but was pushed through in the PS. We went round and round with teachers but not important. He missed concepts and while doing a placement test with him after we pulled him out of PS we learned about how bad it really was. He did okay in Math one minute and poor the next. I honestly thought it was other issues. He asked for help and so did I. I helped so I thought but nope it was only enough to get him by. He is missing decimal and fraction concepts, not a ton but some. He's the kind of kid that could probaly do a year in 6 mon. I know sounds contradictory but really he flys through it pretty good and gets bored if too much time is spent on something he knows which is where I think he got lost a little. Sorry to be so long winded.

I'm trying to figure out if MUS is good for him or should I use TT? Why do you like either and have you experienced this? It's like where do we go from here. We tried Saxon and it didn't work for us. Help!!

  9. I have such a headache regarding this. You all seem so experienced. We haven't HS that long and we have spent nearly all of 8th grade unschooling and building confidence. We are behind in subjects so I'm a little discouraged. I know don't compare kids. I can't help it. I don't even know what he wants to do in college since he's just getting to feel good about himself. This is what I'm thinking about doing. It may be too much and since I"m still learning about TOG it may change.

We are working on getting him caught up in math since he missed some concepts and he's super smart in Math (does it in his head) but he has struggled with some fractions and decimals so we decided to go back over it. I don't think we will take too long but if we do then we will be even more behind. We do school year round but we are doing mainly math and literature right now to build reading. The PS really messed him up. We really don't know what level he is at but we are learning that he is higher than they told me. We have done things different to keep interest and it is working. I know I'm off topic a bit but maybe someone else has these issues. He tested at 6th grade last year but we are learning that he is at grade level. He doesn't do well at comprehension when it's what he calls "boring" and he does have a LD with this. Science is his strength and so is Math. We are currently doing MUS and want to change to TT. We will be starting these in May:

TOG: Literature, History, Philosophy, Bible, Art History and Government

IEW: along with TOG Writing Aids

    Winston Advance Grammar

    PE: Freshman Football Team

TT: PreAlgebra and probaly double up.... Do they have AP in this?

Apologia Physical Science either at home or coop would like to do AP

Would like to do foreign language but not sure if it's in the budget until the 2nd part of the year. Any ideas? We may be doing a coop for this but they do ABeka........ not sure if I want that. We do have Charter schools online that offer dual enrollment. We may do that. I feel like I'm lost. :001_huh:

  10. What does WTM/WEM mean? I thought I wasn't going to be able to do it. I read things more than one time and I'm taking it slow. When I decided to do that it has been tons better. I'm a control freak and want it a certain way. I've had to take a different approach. The freebie that I printed didn't do it justice at all. It's nothing like having all of the items. I'm happy I bought it. lol:D

  11. Which thread is this? This will be my first HS for HS experience and my head is spinning listening to this thread. breathe..... wow. We just left the PS last year and I'm planning to HS all the way through.

I printed out both of them, but I wasn't as clear about how science was presented in the middle school curriculum... only that it was the three subjects and they call them both "independent" and "simultaneous"... so I don't know quite how that works in terms of scheduling...

We're currently using the second of the Singapore middle school science texts (the last version -- Interactive) which does cover quite a bit of biology, chemistry and physics, as well as some health topics, in a sort-of-simultaneous way... I'm not sure if it's equivalent/similar or not, but it's working out rather well so I won't worry too much. :) But generally speaking, our "middle school" has quite a bit in common with the BASIS curriculum, except the Saxon math part... we've used Singapore almost straight through.

  12. I see some great info here from others that has even helped me but I wanted to add some insite from a new users point of view. I did what you did and felt the same way as you did. I do have year 1. The more I read, the more I love. We are starting in a few months and doing UG/D/some R. We have a 9th grader that will use a little of D and R. I'm very excited and sometimes overwhelmed but it gets better as you go. I find myself a little more confident as I dive in. KWIM

  13. We have had a rough year with just life in general but despite it all I have figured out what we will be doing next year and the rest of this year. We will be finishing TOG 1 thru the summer/fall and begin our next year in Jan with TOG 2 of which I have not purchased. We are going to use TT next year and have not purchased it yet.

It feels good having it planned out so early. We started school this year late but then we have decided not to do a traditional school year. It's so hot in the summer and my kids like to do school during that time. It's perfect for us so we are doing it different then everyone else. It was a mindset for me so that I didn't beat myself up. We moved during the holidays and school was not an option at that time. We are still not on track but it doesn't matter and I'm getting better daily. YEahhh me.... lol

  14. I say this because we too did this last March when our son was in 7th grade. We have unschooled since and now we are ready to begin to get going again. We moved and although it has been a really rough year I know that it was the best decision and that he will be do better despite my lack of confidence. He is special needs but brillant. He has flourished even though he behind academically.

  15. Since, judging by the ages of your children, it seems like you're only going to need one lapbook so I would get the kit. They are nice, all ready for you to put together (I wouldn't get the preassembled.)

Yeah, I didn't want to get it pressembled. It would take the fun from it and the learning experience. My 13 yo is a hands on kid too so I'm not sure if he will want to do it. I was thinking of a report board for the same project, you know the kind that you use for science projects and just tweek it as a project.

    Anyone else?

  16. Hello,

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays and have been blessed.

Now for my question. I am beginning TOG Y1 in about 6 weeks. I'm compiling the remainder of what I need and haven't settled into TOG yet. What do you recommend for the Lapbooks, CD's or the kit? I have a 9 yo 2nd/3rd grade level but the age of 4th grade. I'm trying to keep the learning curve going with him but wasn't sure which would be the best for my money. I haven't been able to find them used so I'm just going to buy it but didn't know which one would be better.

What are your opinions for those of you who are currently using them? TIA

  17. I bought Redesigned from someone a few months ago to use later this year. I am just hearing about this for the first time. I'm sad that this is happening to them. My heart goes out to them.

The cost of the DE is much higher than I would have thought it would have been. I just don't have the money for anything right now. I'm conflicted with what will happen to our TOG experience since I've barely put it together and used it. I'm super disappointed since I like the paper version but I'm open to the computer version also. The cost is what is alarming to me. I'm praying that we will find what we need when we need it because ultimately it's in Gods hands. I just don't know what to say.

    :(

  18. :iagree::iagree::iagree::iagree::iagree::iagree:

What comes around goes around and I'm a firm believer that he's slippery sucker. lol People like that always get exposed. Just wait for the mortgage lawsuits... I'm sure we will find all kinds of things going on. His promises mean nothing since he can't even keep the small ones. Clinton is keeping a distance and there is a reason and it's not sour milk. I'm conservative and I can say this I like Hilary more than this snake.
