  1. Thanks for all the great responses. For chem matters, is this an online mag specifically?
  2. Hello, Wondering if anyone could recommend any magazines that their child enjoys and they feel is well worth the time and money spent on it. Probably something more science geared would be best. Thanks,Sharon
  3. Hello, Wondering if anyone can recommend a good magazine(s) for their 13 yo and up that their child enjoys and you feel is well worth the time and money. Thanks for your time, Sharon
  4. Wondering if anyone receives magazine(s) for their 13yo and up that their child enjoys and you feel is well worth the time and money spent on it? Looking for a general magazine, but maybe more science geared would be best. Thanks so much, Sharon
  5. Where did you look at AG, online? I'd love to see all these and get a feel for it myself. Thanks,
  6. Thanks so much for everyone's input. I'd love to get them both super cheap and then decide from there.........but wouldn't we all love that!!! It certainly helps to have the feedback and here how the programs are laid out. Best,

  8. Denise, thanks so much for all of your thorough information. I do not think I want to learn the 4th edition myself first and then go thru with him. Thankfully he did really well in 8/7, we got alg. 1/2 but realized its a lot of repeat so I'm having him do the tests to be sure which so far (except when for the occassional flake-out) he does very well. So, I think he can pick up pretty well however this will be a much higher level so we'll see. I'm glad you mentioned about Saxon's word problems. That is definately my one major disappointment with them. I want intricate word problems for him to stretch his brain, not ones that are worded so similarly to the others. Guess I could just look for word problems separately somewhere to supplement.........one a day kinda thing for the fun of it......or more if they're too easy. Again, thanks so much for your info. I don't mean to sound lazy but this next school year may possibly be last year hsing and he may apply to a public math and science high school. I want to give him as much foundation as possible and it sounds like edition 3 (I think:confused:) may be the right option.
  9. So Hake has a full year of lessons similar to the way saxon math courses are laid out? Wish I could peruse these books at local library or bookstore to make final decision. Thanks for your response. Good luck with analytical. I hope it is more suitable for your homeschool.
  10. Any strong recommendations one way or another? We haven't been doing grammar consistently since he was busy with an online writing course. He also took a 10 week high school lit class this year and maintained an A-/B+ avg. However, I finally decided we had to finish up fll 4 that we had started back whenever. I still want to continue some sort of formal grammar program and not sure if it should be analytical grammar or hake. I haven't looked closely at them yet although we love saxon math and I now know Hake is a saxon product. Any reviews one way or another? I am not opposed to putting him in a lower grade level so we do not skip anything although it sounds like hake 6 is merely a review of 5.
  11. Thanks for your response too Andrea. I guess I would have to take a closer look at the individual lessons to see which level would suit him best if I went with one of these programs. Again, he is technically 7th grade although he seems to be above grade level in most areas yet I have no prob putting him in a lower level since I do not want to miss anything foundational. Your childrens school situation sounds really neat!! Thanks again, Sharon dh 21 yrs ds18,dd16,ds13
  12. I am getting ready to order Alg. 1 Saxon and didn't realize there were 2 editions. The following is copied from rainbow resources site where I planned on purchasing the product. The 4th Editions of Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 are intended primarily for students who plan on taking Saxon Geometry and are wanting Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 courses with reduced geometry content. The sequence for incorporating these courses would be: Algebra 1, Geometry, then Algebra 2. The main difference between the 3rd and 4th editions is that much of the previously-integrated geometry content has been removed. You may find this a positive or a negative, depending on your student’s need to review geometry concepts, especially in Algebra 2 (or pre-ACT!). Other differences in the editions are that there are no Saxon Teacher CD-ROMs for the 4th Edition programs and no step-by-step solutions for test problems. At this point, Saxon is not recommending that most homeschoolers switch to the 4th editions. I am probably going to stick with the 3rd edition. I do not know if my son will do saxon geometry because next year may be his last year hsing. Any advice about these 2 options? Thanks so much, Sharon dh 21 yrs ds 18, dd 16, ds13

  14. We've been sort of lagging with a formal grammar program the past few years. 13yods did latin for children for 3 years (not this year though) and took an online upper level 10 week lit course this year. He truly enjoys reading and has taken an online writing course for the last few years. He is usually happy to write if I ask him too. We had fll 3 and 4 when he was younger but never finished 4 until recently. I'd like to move onto a secular program from fll even though he is technically 7th grade. I want to be sure we're not skipping anything yet at the same time , I don't want him to be super bored either. I'm sure I could always modify a program to make it more suitable for him if necessary. Any recommendations? Much appreciated, Sharon
  15. Thank you for your feedback. I forgot to mention I was looking for a secular grammar program. I know Rod and Staff is not but I am not sure about Hake. Forgive me, I could look it up in seconds but I just wanted to see if there was other input about secular programs. Thanks, Sharon
  16. Forgive me because I was almost sure I posted this already but I couldn't find it. My 13 yo is ready for a good grammar program. He has done very well with write guide this year, is super comfortable writing just about anything I assign and he loves to read. That all being said, we have not done "grammar' consistently and just finished fll4. I'd like to continue with something that is a good extension of that but appropriate for his age and level. However I am not opposed to him doing something designated for 5th grade as I don't like to skip but I can always skim. Thanks so much in advance. Sharon
  17. Someone from the middle grades forum also suggested doing the tests in alg 1/2 and evaluate from there. Plus with rainbow resources I have up to 6 months and I would only lose 10% of my initial purchase price plus shipping it back to them. Many thanks for the confidence and helpful suggestions. Sharon
  18. This really makes a lot of sense to me especially your point about starting alg.1 with only a few months left to the school year. He also enjoys doing the SAT question of the day and I could probably find other supplemental math for him to do in the interim. Even though we do not school during the summer he has mentioned continuing with math throughout the summer so he can get to higher levels. Maybe we'll consider that if we run out of alg 1/2, supplemental options and he just wants more. Although he says that now and then summer seems to take on a whole other direction and doing math daily may not appeal much once the lazy, hazy days hit:001_smile: Thanks, Sharon
  19. Thanks so much for your responses. I was told to see how he did on his last 5 tests and gauge from there. He scored one 80, two 85s and two 90s and thats with the usual distractions......phone, barking, beautiful bird at the feeder etc. He was able to correct all right away second time around and most are usually silly mistakes. However, those are the scores and its been said that 85 or better on those means he is able for alg.1. I like the suggestion about working from the back and as one said we can always go back to alg.1/2 if necessary although I bought new and wouldn't mind money back or an exchange. I'll have to check rainbow resources return policy. Thanks so much again. Any more info is 100% welcome. Best, Sharon
  20. Hi Amy, Thanks so much for your response. He scored one 80, two 85s , and two 90s. Our tests aren't always given under the usual testing circumstances one may find in a traditional school (phone rings, dog barks, etc.) however those are the scores. Upon correction , he got them all right next time around and some were just silly mistakes. As far as hand picking , I meant not for weak areas but for areas where I feel he is super fluent (which looks like a lot from a quick glance) and just to be sure myself in his fluency. 30 questions on areas where he is more than solid seems overkill although I am a big supporter of practice, practice, practice with math. I'll have to look at alg 1/2 a little more closely to see if I still feel the same way now after the feedback I've received. However, any more input is 100% welcome. Thanks so much!! 21. My 13 yo ds just finished saxon 8/7 . I questioned which to put him in next, alg.1/2 or just alg. 1. The saxon person I communicate with when I have any questions about content etc gave me the impression that you certainly could go right into alg. 1 but he would recc. alg.1/2 first. Looked over the lessons last night and it just seems like a lot of repeat of what he just had. I am totally all about repitition in math however (and I guess since its midyear that we're moving on) it just seems a shame to go from the concepts he was learning at the end of 8/7 to many, many, many lessons of "busy work." Plus saxon seems to repeat so many previous concepts in continuing lessons that one does get to practice what hasn't been taught/thought about it in a period of time. I suggested to my saxon contact that I handpick certain problems from each lesson (although they explicitly frown upon this in other literature about saxon math) that I feel would give him adequate review and for me to be sure he is ready to move. However, he didn't agree with this and felt that nothing should be skipped in alg. 1/2. Anyone have any experience with this? Would really appreciate your thoughts. Sharon

  23. Thank you all so much for your responses. I wonder sometimes why I don't go on wtm forum more often . This is really a treasure trove. If there are any other comments please feel free to post although think I'm getting more comfortable with my decision. Going to check on the exchange policy just in case though.
  24. 20 plus years with no repairs on our washing machine (maytag) Looking at LG top loader without agitator. Getting great price but hesitated because I need to stand on a stool to reach the bottom of the drum . I can live with that since it is very highly rated but now concerned that the speed efficiency will wrinkle clothes more (as in some reviews) and the last thing I want to do is start ironing. Saw speed queens recc and may check out tomm. Any opinions greatly appreciated. married to DH 21 years ds 18 @ Williams college dd soph perf arts academy ds 13 first hser. saxon 8/7, oak meadow science, english, intro to lit through write guide, haoh, nerf obsessed, guitar happy.
  25. No antihistamines , decongestants or any meds, thankfully. Went to primary care doc earlier this evening and he did glucose blood test as well and number within normal, no sugar in urine. Gave us scrip for other blood work but he seemed unsure of what it could be. When I mentioned diabetes insidus, he said that is usually associated with people on medication. I didn't realize that. Thanks for the responses. If it doesn't improve , we'll go for blood work in a few days.
