:seeya:Welcome! Take off your coat and have a sit a while!

My eyes kind of glazed over while trying to read it, lol.
Personally, I think the whole thing is stupid, since you can make a crummy education look great and a fabulous education appear less so, but my evaluator seems to be perfectly capable of grasping how our homeschool works, and our superintendent didn't have any trouble rubber stamping us, so whatever.
My log and my attendance chart are one and the same. I have a sheet that includes the date and our books used on those dates (abbreviated). On that list, I just write "field trip" for field trips. I haven't had a day where there wasn't a single book used (even if it was just a "fun reading" book), but plenty where there were only 1 or 2 listed. And no, I don't always remember to do it RIGHT THEN AND THERE. :tongue_smilie:
That said, I do include a typed blurb in front of each subject's samples that includes the fact that we've watched videos, played games, completed activities, and had in depth discussions, etc. (without listing those individual things) to emphasize the fact that our low-book days are certainly not lacking.
My evaluator is great, and I chose her because she has homeschooled herself in my SD for many years. I know I live in a tough district. I know they like to push. I've referred to the law every time I deal with them. Just, now with HSLDA seeming like they are siding with the tough districts, I'm not thrilled.
Carrie, would you be willing to share what you use for your log? I think that would be way too detailed to keep up for multiple children, but dh thinks I should try to come up with something to have ready, as a backup.

In 3 years we moved from small-urban (pop density 6,401) to queen-of-suburbia (3,370) to semi-rural (466). We are sooooo glad we moved from the first location. Within the time that we left the one pretty-empty road containing Walmart and Sam's Club has now become a mile long shopping strip. Crime is even more of a problem now than it was then.
We were happy in suburbia, and we happened to be on the edge of it, so the farms weren't far away. We had almost an acre lot, which was fully fenced in the back. We had great tree coverage, and in the summer we felt more remote, as we couldn't see neighboring yards/houses as we could the rest of the year. We were able to have a great garden and would have had chickens, had we stayed longer. Shopping and museums were very close, and we had a great community park we could walk to, or ride bikes to.
Now we are semi-rural. We are right off a highway connecting 2 small cities (40,000-50,000 each). The area we are in now has about 14,000 people. We live on a dozen acres. There are many mobile homes in the area. There are huge needs for many families in this area. The culture is very different, very homogeneous. Most value their privacy. Yet I love the freedoms we have here. Love the wildlife. Love the amazing skies. Love the nature. Love the dirt. Love the s-p-a-c-e. We are getting a Walmart, which I'm not thrilled with, but know it will be helpful, and will definately save on gas.
I was happy with suburbia, but I love it here.

In my state, I am not allowed to administer a standardized test to my own children. So here, you either ask a friend/family member to administer, or you pay someone else.

For reference:
HSLDA Statement on Portfolio Log Requirements
In years past, I have completed an attendence chart, noting 180 days of instruction, as well as a log, designating by title the primary reading materials used, divided by subject. I have also included a log of books read by the student, as well as a log of other books utilized throughout the year (library card print-out).
My school district gave me a difficult time last year, stating they wanted to have a log of what was completed on each day. I said::001_tt2:
I know I saw some document from PDE last year which had a more detailed recommendation for the log, which is in line with what HSDLA has now detailed as well. (Can't find that again, though.)
So, is anyone changing how they document their log this year? How do you feel about this new statement from HSDLA?
(This is not meant to be a discussion of HSLDA. Please let's stay off that topic.:001_smile:)

Poor Bob.Reminds me of when my son was about seven and called downstairs, "Mom, do you have an old sock I can use for a colon? The one I have now is too small and the tennis ball won't fit through the anus!" Yes, the guy repairing my stove did raise an eyebrow at that.

I read a book on learning to research, and that is where I learned about the Columbia Encyclopedia which the author raved about and insisted every home should own, for it's examples of good writing, as well as a reference resource. The Columbia is just one very large volume and only republished every decade or so. I consider it a must have now too after I have gotten used to having it.
We have an old Columbia Encyclopedia, and I love it (except for the small type)!

Even with having some experience with henna, I recommend a test strand.

I place a few paper towels in the trash can, then pour on top of them.

My dh is quite happy to stay home with the children while I go. He can't hear well in crowds, and so it's not an easy atmosphere for him. I don't mind, as then I don't have to worry about anyone but myself, and the 50 million homeschooling-related thoughts in my head. :D
I have a few friends who take them, and most trade off, so one can hear lectures while the other takes the kids.

If it were me....
I would try to accept that people grieve in different ways. That she already has a new boyfriend does not mean she isn't grieving.
If I weren't ready to meet the new boyfriend, I would say so. She asked; I would be honest in my response. (She may choose to cancel; are you willing to accept that if it happens?)
:iagree:

Who knew there was more than one Groundhog? Now how do they reconcile that if the groundhogs don't do the same thing?
More than one groundhog!?!?!? :eek::svengo:

Nance - PCN usually has it live, and many of the networks bounce to it as well. We will be watching online, at the above mentioned site, as we don't have tv reception.

At first I was thinking you meant me. I did have swings in my house for my boys.
I just put some circle hooks in the top of a door frame. And then when my boys wanted to swing I hooked on a "S" hook and the swing. The swing was rope, and the seat was knitted by my Mom.
That's a great idea!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay...done. Is it cheating if I count individual dishes as 1 each?? :)
 You sound like my kids, now!
Sorry I didn't stay on to kick out you out again. Hopefully you got more done!
If not... there's always tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm wondering if it would be beneficial for you to send the letter now, rather than wait until the 10th?
Not intending to add to your stress, but would this help to alleviate some?

Put 17 things away, then come back (unless you get sidetracked into doing more).

The IRS is taking the brunt of late policy changes, and that is not under their control - that is the lawmakers. Not saying the changes aren't beneficial to some...
On a personal note, this is the first year in FOREVER that we haven't itemized deductions - so no delay for us! Woot!

Have you thought of making Focaccia Bread? We usually top ours with olive oil and a few herbs. We might add a bit of sheep cheese if we have some on hand.

Kids getting punchy this winter? lol I remember that. It was fab.
I think my dh would shoot me if I rigged one up. (Oh, wait, I bet I could put one in the BARN!!!!!!)
But a friend's dtr, this morning, was swinging from her living room curtains, and then doing pull-ups on her bathroom towel rod.
-
This popped into my head today, and wanted to share the concept with someone.
Someone posted a video (a year or two ago!) of their kids swinging for indoor winter "gym" time. These swings were fabric/rope, and made in doorways.
Help??????????

Right now I can hear the ticking of the clocks. Everyone in the house (except me) is asleep! Oh, but you didn't ask about now... :D
I do work 1:1 with each. We don't whisper, but we also don't yell. While I'm working with 1 or 2, the other(s) are working quietly on something independently. Although the ds does need to get rather physical with some counting, and that tends to get loud.
When we are all working together, it can be loud or quiet, depending on the activity. If I am reading aloud, I expect for everyone to able to hear me. If we are brainstorming, I would expect it to be louder. And gym time? Sometimes I need earplugs.
I do think that they need to be taught how to work quietly and independently. They would rather be with someone else. They would rather talk all they want, or sing. Yet there will be times when they can't speak every thought as they do their math. There will be times when they need to sit still and proper in their chair rather than dance to the song in their head. (It does make for some amusing moments, though!)
