  1. I wanted to add, don't be surprised if she places into Saxon 54. Last year all 3 of my kids placed "ahead" in Saxon after coming out of PS. Also, while we haven't started 54 yet, a good portion of the book seems to review what we did last year in Intermediate 3.

    Good to know!

I love this place. You all are so helpful!

  2. My son did Intermediate 3 last year after coming out of PS. Although it had fewer lessons (110 v 120) than his older siblings' Saxon books, it seemed similar in style. I liked not having to buy all the manipulatives that went along with regular Saxon 3. He did do the placement test ahead of time and had no trouble with any of the lessons. He did need help copying some of the problems/getting things lined up but I think that is normal for a 7 y/o. We bought ours new from christianbook.com. They sell it as a homeschool set with a textbook, workbook/test, power-up book, and solutions manual. Let me know if you are interested in buying used or if you want to know anything else about I3-I don't think it's well known around here. :001_smile:

Ok. Thank you. I'll have her take the test and see where we are...

  3. Saxon 3 is written by Nancy Larson and would follow in the same vein as Saxon 2. There is a large teacher manual that gives you the scripted step-by-step teaching instructions. The worksheets are more of the same. The front side you work on after a lesson, the back side is "homework". It is very manipulative based.

Saxon 3 Intermediate is a relatively new addition that was written by Hake, who wrote the Saxon 5/4 and up books. It laid out more like the upper level classes. There is a textbook that does all the teaching. You can either have your child read it and self-learn, or you can teach it to them. Then there is a set of practice problems that are generally written on a separate sheet of paper.

You wouldn't need to do both of these courses. Pick one or the other. For example, if you like scripted lessons and manipulatives, then you might want to continue on with Saxon 3. If you don't need the scripted lessons or manipulatives and you want your child to gain practice with a different format, then you should look at Saxon 3 Intermediate.

You can view some pretty good samples of both at cbd.com

Thank you! Just what I needed to know! Thanks for your time!

  4. I heard that Saxon 3 is scripted and manipulative based like K-2, but intermediate 3 is set up more like the higher levels with more independent work, and less parental hand holding.

I haven't seen them to be sure, but I would really like to know! We are finishing 2 this year. :bigear:

OOh...hope someone answers this! I'd like to know!

  5. I was able to find 90 percent of our curriculum for the year from the forums here, in like new condition, for fractions of the price. Its AWESOME. The few things I needed otherwise came from Amazon. Some things, like logic of english, I get from the publisher because I would rather support them than anyone else. I feel like buying used from other home schoolers not only saves ME money, but it is helping another family make a little bit of money back from their stuff. Its a good thing :D

I know, I'd really like to get things for a cheaper price. I'm going to surf the sale stuff here. It's just that I'm unsure of descriptions, what edition it is, does it come with everything I need? It's very overwhelming!!

  6. Have you been looking at the Saxon Homeschool website? I would have her take the placement test to be sure she is ready for Saxon 3 then order it. I have not heard of Saxon 3 Intermediate. That may be a public school only title.

Yes, my understanding is the DVDs, in all their various flavors, begin at 5/4.

And you do not need to be sorry about asking any question no matter how trivial you might feel it is. We all love to help.

Aww, thank you. I feel a little lost here. I did not know there was a placement test - awesome!!

  7. I'm assuming you buy it from somewhere like christianbook.com or other sites like that rather than the manufacturer's website??

I'm going to try to buy some used, but being a first timer, I'm not sure what I need as in teacher's manual, kid kit's...seems like a lot of people just sell bits and pieces of each thing, and I'm afraid I'll miss something.

Anyway, popular websites for buying your materials new??

    Thanks!

Here's what I'm looking for and not sure where to buy...

    Saxon Math 3 and 65

    Spelling Workout grade 3 & 5

    Bob Jones English 5

Progeny Press study guides...Wrinkle in Time, Shiloh, Where the Red Fern Grows, Charlotte's Web, Sarah Plain & Tall, Stone Fox

Story of the World: Ancients (the whole kit, I think)

Apologia Astronomy (it's just the book, right?)

  8. 1st timer here...sorry:001_huh:

My daughter just finished 2nd grade in public school. They did Saxon math so I am going to continue to use it. She did very well in math and seemed to skip along with no problems. Do I start her on Saxon 3 or Saxon 3 Intermediate? Is there a big difference between the two?

Also, Saxon only has dvds starting at the 4th grade level, correct?

    Thank you!

  9. OP,

The last several years it has been hard for me to buy lit programs no matter how reasonably priced. Yet this is how we learn best. As much as I would like to support the authors more, my praise of their curriculum will have to do for now. I always start hunting the for sale and trade boards. Check out thrift stores. And when going to Amazon check out the used Market Place items. But I only use Market Place for the higher priced items because it does not pay to pay $4 shipping and 1 cent for a book that normally cost $5 new. It can take a little while to find all the items you need (if you don't find someone selling the whole package), but you can save a LOT of money.

The used boards I go to are

    ~~vegsource

    ETA:

Once you decide if you really like MFW and want to continue with it, you can start doing searches for the next year's books ahead of time. This will give you time to find the best value. I keep a running list of the chapter and picture books that I will need in my purse. When I go to thrift stores I don't forget to look.

    Thank you so much!
