  1. :DIt's a Wonderful Life:D - we love this movie Angels In the Outfield - just ordered it from the library Any others? Cartoons maybe? Thanks!
  2. Have you seen any show with angels watching over the main character? A guardian angel, perhaps? Youth movies are quick to show evil or demons but rarely visually show angels. Reason for this question is my kids was visiting a relative and their kids was raving about a great kids movie on. My 2 oldest got a few minutes glance and was freaked out because the cartoon character was calling on dark spirits to help them with the evil plot. Of course evil lose in the end but there was a visual of evil spirits and bad man BUT no visual of good spirits (angels, etc) just the good hearted characters. My dd asked why does the bad guy get spiritual help and the good guy is left to fight allow, where are the angels? I explained everything and now I just want to follow up with a movie that focus on good. Therefore, I will ask here, what movie/s has a visual of angel/s or spirit helping the good person fight evil; in a kid format?
  3. How can I test my child's DRA Level at home? The schools around here access kids reading level and what group the kids will be in based solely on their DRA results. I want to access my daughter now before fall in case DH decides they will go to non homeschool. How can I do this? Thanks in advance.
  4. :iagree::iagree::iagree: Everyone made a "HOOPA LA" over this. Good grief! I personally believe that people who make a issue over these minor things that every president before has done (and no one said nothing when G.W. Bush did this) are just nick picking everything because it is OBAMA. If this was Al Gore or Joe Plumber, no one would even take the time to blog. I've said my peace :001_smile:
  5. I am not asking for any special modification or curriculum change. I am asking for them to just not TEACH him reading at all. Maybe when they get to a reading lesson DS can read a book that I send with him or do another activity. At this school, the kids work independently and are not doing the same thing at the same time to allow the teacher time to work with kids individually. Therefore, when he is suppose to be working on his reading, I am asking that they not teach him their reading program this year. That is all, eliminate this subject for this year, nothing special.
  6. He wants to go because he thinks the uniform is cool and more than 1/2 the co-op kids go here now because the economy here force their parent to work (reduced income, spouse loss job, etc.). I can deal with them teaching him other subjects, but I am anal about reading and I don't want them interfering with our progress. He loves phonics, and teaches others how to sound out words :) I am at bat with this and just do not know what to do? I do not want him overwhelmed. BTW, they have 1/2 day first grade? I know kindergarten was 1/2 day or whole day but 1st grade?
  7. DS wants to go to 1st grade PS but I do not want the PS teach him reading. Can I demand that they do not teach him reading this year since they do not do state testing in 1st grade? I have been teaching DS reading and I do not want him learning the 220 Dolch sight word and learning to read by picture clues, memorizing, and guessing (this is the way the schools here teach reading). I see the kids here have the most diffcult time spelling and sounding out word. Therefore, I do not want my son to be taught reading and he ends up not properly advancing in his reading. KWIM. So, I figure since my tax dollars pay for this education, then I should be able to request that the public school/charter school not teach DS reading. That why, I can finish up inputting my foundation of phonics and spelling. Is that to much to ask? This kid really wants to try PS(w/ mom filling in the holes) and I hate to deny him but I do not want him caught in the middle with this reading issue.
  8. should I go outside the progran to teach these frequent words?
  9. Is there a rule for these words? how do you teach them using phonics when you have not got to the lesson of long vowels? It is impossible to read bob books, HOP books, or any early reader books without knowing the Dolch sight words. I want a complete phonics background for my kids to stand on. With that said, How do you use phonics to teach the following words: What (my kid said Hwaht not whut) You (my kid said yo) for (my kid said far) Are (my kid said air) Thanks in advance for the help :) Note: My oldest is anal about correctly pronoucing words. He was at the market last week and yelled I want to go see the "lollipop(lolli with the long o sound) show". Some older kids start to laugh and said it "LAHLLEEpop, dummy", in which DS reply "No, you are the dummy. There is no A in LOLLIPOP" :D See why phonics is so important. `
  10. ClicknRead is good to use if you need to keep a kid busy while working with another. If you want to use it as a stand alone program then you will need to print out all the practice information and quiz them on it. For example, the sentences at the end, the dog will state good job rather they read them or not, therefore, you will need the print out to go over the sentences will the child. Some kids can read the sentence without further help and others not. If you want this as a stand aflone then you will need to sit with the child and do the program together, others you will have to use it as a reinforcment to another program. HTH!
  11. She really likes HOP (per post #25) and states no to the other program :glare: I am not comfortable using this program because of the endless use of Dolch sight words. However, she is so excited to read the skits and the book on her own. Any suggestion?
  12. Thanks all! I did a lesson with her today. First we used Phonic pathway and she stated "I don't like mommy's book too much" Second, we tried letter flash cards with only using 3 letter. I told her the sound and we arranged the letters to make words. This was great until she went to get a Bob Book and said "why I no read myself". When I tried to read it for her, she just walk away to her room and stated "school doesn't work". Then, I decided at that moment to try Hooked On Phonic yellow box 1 (the old set with cassettes) with her. We didn't use the tapes (I do not have a tape player) but we did the first page in the book (introduces A and T as at) and she read the first story in the workbook by herself. She was so excited that she read by herself. She wanted to read this short skit to everybody. :) She wants to do more HOP and loves it. Now the problem: HOP teaches helper word (aka Dolch sight words) and I want her to have a complete phonic background to start her reading. I do not want her to rely on someone else imagination (with picture clues and drawings in the books). What do I do? Is there a reading lesson interesting for a three year old? Is there a program with skits or book/s she can read after her lesson? Can I alter HOP (if so, how)? ElizabethB, anyone, I need suggestions here:)
  13. She watched the leap frog DVD and I thought her memorizing the books was bad. I guess I will give it a shot and if she gets bored then I'll back off. Thanks!
  14. UPDATE: see post 25 She is screams and throws tantrum because she wants to read things herself. She tells DH and myself "teach me to read this". DH explain that it takes time and instead he would read the story to her. She will then start to memorize the story and the words in the story, so she can read this later to the baby or by herself. She bugs DS to teach her to read and then he yells mom she want to read. Should I start teaching her? Or just let her fuss and rave until she is older? We tried and I need suggestions :)
  15. Thanks, it is god to now that this one prrogram will not be use for all the kids. I thought I would have to shake it up a little. Thanks for posting it is really helpful to see what others have done.
  16. Thanks, I'm trying to get a feel on the best approach to advancing DS reading skills without moving to fast. All the while finding the right fit for DDs.
  17. I want to know what program, books, curriculum, video, etc you used successful to teach your child to read. Did you use a phonics base, spelling base, or memorization base method to teach them how to read? When did you start letting them read on there own? (allow them to choose, and what books did you allow) How did you advance their reading to reading chapter books by themselves (ex. Magic Tree House, etc)? When did you introduce sentence structure? (punucation, subject, predicate, etc) I am trying to see pattern or time line here. I am very new to teaching subjects but not new to teaching (I teach my kids w/o even knowing it). I know that I want my child to have the ability to read anything, I just do not know how to get there. For example, when to introduce phonics rules, sentence structure, nouns, etc. Or wait until their 8 or older. I just I want to see the success of reading and the progression from learning letter sounds to reading at a college level :) Thanks in advance for answering my question so that I can see your progression and success :D BTW - my 2 DD are working together learning letter sounds, DS reads at second grade level, and the baby just listens.
  18. Thanks everyone for the tips. I will look into this and see what will be a good fit for her.
  19. I used flash cards and songs to teach DD the sounds of letters and then we started reading bob books sets 1 and 2. She can read these by herself nowand level 1 HOP books. My question is where do we go from here? Now she only wants books she can read herself. Do I continue the BOB BOOK series or move to something else. I feel like with this series we are missing the phonic rules (ex. silent e, silent k, etc.). Any advice?
  20. Here's our picture that had us all SPEECHLESS!
  21. Thanks Renai! I am reggistering and I hope this works. If not, Jules can I enlist your help???? Please?? and yes I am half Japanese :) and married korean (dh half korean and mainly socialize with the korean side of his family).
  22. Does anyone know how to make a paper mache globe without wheat flour? Can you make paste another way? Is it still good like the wheat flour paste? Two of the kids are highly allergic to eggs, barley, and wheat. We want to do some paste project. Thanks for the help.
  23. Penpal sites or conversation practice sites????? This would help. My SIL said that my kid are picking up my voice and no one back home will understand a word. She stated this is why people should marry same:glare: I am really trying here but my japanese/english interferes, I want them to learn Koraen because they would heard/read/speak it way more then japanese. Does anyone know where we can get a korean partner/penpal to practice speaking with????
