  1. I'm going to use the ORIGINAL What Your Grader Needs to Know series as my main spine with a little Far Above Rubies unit study thrown in, but use the LoL units to supplement. NtK teaches 3 strands of social studies every year: geography, American history, world history. There are quite a few unit already published–First North Americans, Ancient South America, Vikings, American Peoples, Explorers, Age of Exploration–that cover early American history, as well as tons of stuff to use with the geography and world history strands. I think I'll have what I need as I need it.

    I was just going to use LoL as the spine, but after getting a better look at year 2, there is a lot I need to skip with remedial students that need a lot of triaging of topics. I think, for tutoring, NtK's and FAR's scope and sequences will better meet my needs as my spine, with LoL as the primary source of flesh.

    When it comes to printing, having a machine that uses cheap ink is critical. I'm having no trouble using these units as eBooks and taking noted by hand in a notebook.

    What is NtK ?   I tried looking it up on abbreviations but could not find it :(

  2. I'm still using it.... but only for history ;)

    The kids wanted to go back to Mr. Q for science and for the Year 1 geography portion, I felt we would be better suited with The Complete Book of Maps and Geography.  We will probably still do some of the art (and even some of the geography activities) as they pertain to the history lessons but our main art is going to be Home Art Studio (I had already bought all the disks and supplies).

    We did take a pause while we finished up "summer" (we still had some Boy Scout and Girl Scout activities happening) but are back on track and will begin Unit 2 on Monday.  I need to put the finishing touches on my reviews of Unit 1 and get them posted.

    We use the complete book along with this as well :)  I love the book lists and extend many lessons off of them.   Glad to hear you are enjoying...

  3. I too have been using this and LOVE it !   We use it more as a check list as well but I have to say this is such a good way to teach as we take the topics and add more or less if need be.  I have been spending more than 2 weeks as well as there is SO much that can be covered and kids are keeping an interest in the topics which is so important.  This has to be one of the BEST purchases I have made.  I chose to buy all of year 1.  Maybe by the time I get to year 2 they will have another sale :)

  4. I have a 10 almost 11 year old son.   He is working on grade 6 math.  The problem is he gets the basic concepts so he can do fractions, ratios, etc.  however the problem is when he gets a WORD problem he is totally LOST.  I mean he can't figure it out and he gets so stressed out.  I am using MM, Math Essentials , and a few other things here and there.  I need advice on what or how to teach this to him.  Here is just one example:

    A train travels 165 miles from one town to the next at and average speed of 90 mph.  When did the train leave, if it arrives at 1440 hrs (2:40 pm)?

    Now he can do :   speed   =     distance

                                                   ------------

                                                    time

                              distance =  speed x time

                               time=   distance

                                           ----------

                                            speed

    or   3 4/5 - 2  1/4

    but put them in a word problem and FORGET IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I must also stress I am NOT strong with math at all :(

  5. Okay, when I am individualizing, I tend to pick a kind of lean scope and sequence so I can see the big picture, since I'm going to have to tweak it so much anyway. And if each step is going to take a long time, I prefer a narrow scope and sequence that focuses on basic arithmetic and then algebra.

    There is a LOT of math that is not part of the three R's. It's beautiful. It's fascinating. It's not critical. It's not a 3R.

    There is Math on the Level, if money is no problem. It's good, but not essential or fantastic. I find it hard to manage so many books when I am not home so much. If it was an eBook, I'd be using it. Right now, my copy is collecting dust.

    Arithmetic Made Simple is OOP, but still easy to get. I have used this since the early 90's as a basic spine, well supplemented with WHATEVER I could get my hands on. I use it less often now, but collect used copies that students and neighbors all happily take from me to self study with. I've been thinking about scanning a copy of this.

    Because I'm too lazy to scan Arithmetic Made Simple, I'm just using Math Essentials right now.

    Way back, I had a much older version of this software, but it was developed behind the advanced level my son was at. If I had little ones of my own and a decent working computer and printer, I would want to have this. There are nice online worksheet generators that are just as good, but I do like this one. I am just using the free online stuff myself for now.

    Hunter,  do you think I need to ADD anything to Master Math?  This looks very good and it is reasonably priced.   Should I continue to use MM?

  6. So I have MOST of the curriculum I plan to use figured out.  Here is the major bump in the road.  We are using MM for both of my kids.  The boy who is in GRADE 6 needs more visual/audio/hands on work.  He loves the computer, but did not like FLVS grade 6 math virtual school (he just finished first half a month ago).  So we NEED something that is online to INCLUDE with MM.  Maybe I am totally off here and need to switch math?   Any advise is needed .  Thanks

  7. Here is the response  I just got :   We just received the first of the Year 3 unit proofs in the mail this past week.  You will begin seeing the first ones for sale in the next 2 weeks on our website.  Every few weeks additional units will be released.  The Year 4 curriculum won't be available until 2015.  We offer a discounted full year price for each year and will continue to do so for each of the complete year packages.  For now they will continue to be sold as individual years, but we may offer an additional package deal once they have all been released.  Please let us know if you any other questions.  We're always happy to help

  8. I had a daughter in third LAST school year and she DREADED reading.  I had her work through this program http://spencerlearning.com/    The results were LIFE changing.  Not ONLY did she learn to read but she NOW begs to read!!!!!!!!!!!!   She disliked it SO much she would cry :(   So I   let her look at picture books and continued to READ to her.  I did these lessons and worked through the WHOLE program.  She is NOW caught up to her brother who is an advanced reader :)

  9. I am going to be using LoL  for a guide in most of my planning in Geography, Science, and History.  I would like to ADD a bit more for my 6th grade 10 year old.  I was looking at this in both science and history?  Has ANYONE used either of  these?
